Festival Mainstage“For a quarter-century, Benny Green has been deemed one of the most technically

superb jazz pianists of his generation.”New York Daily News

Since emerging under the tutelage of Betty Carter, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard and Ray Brown in the early 1980s, pianist Benny Green truly possesses the history of jazz at his fingertips. Hailed as perhaps the most exciting hard-swinging, hard-bop pianist to ever emerge from Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Benny Green has become a highly regarded bandleader whose efforts to expand upon the language of the classic jazz canon have placed him not only among the best interpreters, but also among the vanguard of musicians keeping jazz’s evolution going.

Born in New York in 1963, Benny Green grew up in Berkeley, California, and began classical piano studies at the age of seven. Influenced by his father, a tenor saxophonist, his attention soon turned to jazz: “I began trying to improvise on the piano, imitating the records I’d been hearing from my father’s collection, which included a lot of Monk and Bird… it was a gradual process of teaching myself ”. Benny never looked back and never stopped learning as his blossoming talents, supported by mentors such as Walter Bishop, Jr. and others, plus his love for the music, propelled him to the upper strata of jazz luminaries.

Today, it can be argued that nobody plays straight-ahead modern jazz piano with more swinging joy and finesse than Benny Green. You can hear his absolute mastery of the artform on a gamut of recordings including his newest release; Then And Now on Sunnyside Records (his 20th album as leader), or one of his other fine albums such as Greens and Kaleidoscope on Blue Note, or Telarc’s Naturally with bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Russell Malone, as well as his scores of records with top artists like Diana Krall, Freddie Hubbard and Milt Jackson. In 1993, the great pianist Oscar Peterson picked Green to receive Toronto’s Glenn Gould International Protégé Prize in Music and later recorded the dazzling Oscar And Benny album with him.

Celebrating 60 Years of Dave Brubeck’s Time OutChris Brubeck and Dan Brubeck have been making music together practically all of their lives. Drummer Dan and bassist, trombonist, and composer Chris cut their first record together in 1966 – more than half a century ago. They’ve subsequently played a variety of styles in a number of different groups, as well as with their father, jazz giant Dave Brubeck, and with their own Brubeck Brothers Quartet (“BBQ”). With Dan and Chris as the foundation, guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb complete this dynamic quartet.

Although the quartet’s style is rooted in straight-ahead jazz, its concerts reveal an inherent ability to explore and play odd time signatures while naturally integrating the influences of funk, blues and world music. The group’s creativity, technique and improvisation can be heard in their uncompromising music, which reflects their dedication to melody, rhythm, culture and the spontaneous spirit of jazz.

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet’s most recent CD TimeLine, released in 2018, celebrated the 60th anniversary of Dave Brubeck’s historic 1958 State Department Tour. The recording includes freshly rearranged tunes written by Dave inspired by his 1958 tour as well as compelling new originals by members of the “BBQ”.

The group’s visit to JazzYYC will commemorate the 60th anniversary of one of the most iconic jazz albums of all time; Time Out by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Considered one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, it was the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. “Blue Rondo a la Turk”, inspired by the quartet’s visit to Istanbul, and “Take Five” are just two of the now classic Dave Brubeck compositions. It is sophisticated music, which lends itself to cerebral appreciation, yet never stops swinging. Countless other musicians built on its pioneering experiments, yet it is amazingly accessible for all its advanced thinking, a rare feat in any art form. Expect to hear BBQ play a couple of the classic tunes from this album.

What do you get when you cross three amazing saxophonists dressed in wacky clothes, a crazy dancing drummer and a killer upright bass player and have them sing songs about Buses, Roaches and Hockey and spend 1/2 their time playing in the audience? The Shuffle Demons, that’s what!!! They were a band that captured the imagination of a generation with their antics and amazing no holds barred playing and stopped traffic on a regular basis. And now they’re back! 35 years later, the Shuffle Demons return! So get ready to sway in your seat, jump to your feet and dance to the Demon beat!

A hit at festivals all over the world, the Shuffle Demons are a crowd pleasing, full-on musical group that backs up wild stage antics with phenomenal playing by some of Canada’s most talented musicians.

Dirty Catfish Brass Band’s aim is to inspire, create and instigate – but, mostly, they just want you on your feet. Undeniably tight, yet reckless as hell, Dirty Catfish Brass Band deals in powerful phrasing and performances drenched with rhythm. Invoking the sounds of the New Orleans brass tradition, the collective dares to reimagine the streets of a prairie city as one that is hot, alive, and brimming with soul. Based in Winnipeg, MB, the crew strives to surprise, challenge, tickle and pay homage to the New Orleans tradition by giving it a new audience in an unsuspecting locale. In true Louisiana tradition, these boys stick to the spontaneity of festivals, alleyway performance and all around late nights. The band doesn’t ask permission to play, and the crowd certainly doesn’t ask them to stop.

Terra Hazelton and the Polyjesters each on their own boast exciting careers in music, but combined they create an intoxicating and charming chemistry while making beautiful authentic sounding vintage jazz and western swing!

Described by some as a “Renaissance Woman”, multi-talented Terra Hazelton is a Canadian singer, Genie-nominated actress, and radio personality.

Albertan brothers Jason and Sheldon Valleau honed their musical talents in Europe playing for everyone from street folk to the Prince of Monaco. It’s been a bumpy, twisting road since then, rife with adventure, great stories and excellent, eclectic music that ranges from Billie Holiday to The Beatles, classic swing/jazz standards to alternative country.

Dominique Fils-Aimé is a singer-songwriter from Montreal whose inspiration is drawn from soul icons of the 40’s and the 60’s the likes of Billie Holiday, Etta James and Nina Simone. Moving on from her 2018 debut full length blues-tinged Nameless, which boldly confronted historical silences and sorrows, Stay Tuned! is both a call for and reminder of revolution expressed with the fury of red-hot jazz. Wanting to break away from the standards of traditional compositions, Dominique presents a body of work focused on liberating herself from musical forms.
