I work really hard at trying to see the big picture and not getting stuck in ego. I believe we're all put on

this planet for a purpose, and we all have a different purpose... When you connect with that love and that

compassion, that's when everything unfolds.-- Ellen DeGeneres

The Internet of Things: IoT

According to Bill Chamberlin, a Principal Research Analyst on IBM’s Corporate Marketing & Communications team:

“Early phases of the Internet included connecting people to static information and more recently, people to people. Over the next decade, the Internet will evolve to connect people to physical things and also physical things to other physical things …all in real time. It will become the Internet of Things: Billions of interconnected smart devices measuring, moving, and acting upon, sometimes independently, all the bits of data that make up daily life.”

Page 7: JB Media Institute Bootcamp · 2015-07-30 · Welcome to the JB Media Institute Bootcamp 1:00 – 2:00 PM – Marketing in 2015 and Beyond Presenter: Sarah Benoit, Director of Training

The IoT is made up of physical objects (“things”) that have chips, sensors embedded in them that allow the sensing, capturing and communication of all types of data. These devices are then linked through both wired and wireless

networks to the Internet. Advanced “things” have actuators embedded into them as well, giving them the capability to interact with other devices, computing systems and the external environment, including people.

UX is how a person feels when interfacing with a website, a web app or desktop software and, in modern contexts, is generally denoted by some form of human-computer interaction (HCI).

UX designers study and evaluate how users feel about a system, looking at such things as: ➔ ease of use➔ perception of the value of the system➔ utility➔ efficiency in performing tasks ➔ sub-systems and processes within a system and so forth.

What is UX?(aka user experience - not beconfused with UI or user interface)

“In my opinion, no single design is apt to be optimal

for everyone.”

“Beauty and brains, pleasure and usability - they should

go hand in hand.”

The term “user experience” was coined by Dr. Donald Norman, a cognitive science researcher.

He was also the first person to describe the importance of human-centered design.

Virtual Augmented Mixed

Virtual Reality (aka VR): In VR you often wear a “head-mounted display” that resembles goggles. The screen is controlled by a computer, smart phone, or gaming console. High end systems include 3-D audio. VR from offers a high level of immersion. VR is about “presence”.

Augmented Reality (aka AR): AR is also often delivered through a wearable device, like Google Glass. AR is about “utility”. Augmented-reality is less exciting, but the potential market is larger than VR’s. AR adds digital data and information accessible as you view of the real world. This includes everything from text notifications to a simulated screen. AR can be hands free.

Mixed Reality (aka MR): The least-popular form of these three. MR is about “flexibility”. It’s a combo of the best aspects of VR and AR. MR lets you see the real world as well as believable, virtual objects (like VR).
