Dear Members

I can hardly believe that we are into the last quarter of the year! What a year it has been so far. You really have been taking inspiring action all across the UK. The local projects and events that you have been running have been superb and I can’t wait to celebrate all of the successes and achievements at our JCI UK National Convention in Leeds. Do make sure that you book to attend this fantastic weekend. Other national events such as the Marketing Academy and JCI UK LEAP, our leadership academy, have been so well supported this year and I have seen how much the delegates have got out of attending and the training they have received.

As well as local projects, I have been so impressed with how you have thrown yourself into national initiatives such as the £1 a day project and more recently the bra appeal. We set a challenge for you to collect 1,000 bras to help women in developing countries and you absolutely smashed that target! 3,759 bras collected, including 1,270 brand new bras donated by George at Asda. Bra collections are still arriving! What will the grand total be at the end of the year?

As we move into the season of awards and annual dinners there will be much to celebrate and many opportunities to catch up with friends from all over the UK and beyond. There is also JCI World Congress in Rio to look forward to! It seems that the last three months of 2013 are going to more than match the fantastic year we have had so far!

Keep Inspiring Action

The year is flying by and our national convention is nearly upon us.

The theme of the convention is “The Future of Business”, with insights into the future strategy of the world’s largest retailer from Asda boss Andy Clarke, learning the skills of the new

century with Sofie Sandell, a rebooted “world trade game”, and an amazing session from business planner and “digital futurist” Mike Ryan.

Oh, and tree-planting, debating, public speaking, boot camp, golf, spa, Champagne bar and the

JCI UK awards dinner!

National Convention is the highlight of the year with over 100 delegates from all over the UK (and some from even further afield!) coming together to share ideas, make new friends, and celebrate the JCI year. View the full conference

JCI South Summerfest of course! Hosted by JCI Portsmouth on Saturday 24th August, the 2013 Southern region event helped kick-off the last summer Bank Holiday weekend of the year. After morning cuppas and huge Danish pastries, a welcome speech by JCI South Regional Group Chair, Drew Charman, kicked off the day. National President, Emma Eastwood, followed and presented a surprise Inspiring Action Award to JCI London’s Deputy President, Dexter Dash, following a nomination by Drew for his collaborative efforts in supporting the JCI Reading team. The morning session started in fun fashion with plenty of ‘Ice Breaker’ activities designed to help the attendees get to know each other in more ways than they could possibly imagine! The group were then handed over to Sarah Beckwith, JCI UK Membership Director, who enticed every single delegate into standing up in front of the whole group to speak on several different amusing impromptu topics. A mixture of seasoned public speaking and

debating veterans were present who were able to share their tips and tricks to newcomers to the world of speaking in public.

After a huge buffet lunch the group’s thoughts were turned to their local communities when the official JCI course element began. JCI Impact, led by our very own RGC along

with Soraya Bowen, JCI UK Community Director, asked ‘why’ the issues in communities really occur and ‘how’ JCI members, as young active citizens, could make an impact. In keeping with the community theme Nicky Radcliff from The Rainbow Centre, JCI

Portsmouth’s community partner, stopped by to tell the group a bit about how the huge pile of charity shop donations they had brought with them would be contributing to the centre’s valuable efforts. It was a tight squeeze in Nicky’s car but she managed to get all of the donations, her husband and a little Jack Russell all in - just!

With the group thinking that their energy levels might be about to start running dangerously low, they had a surprise break with everyone being treated to a 99 ice cream - a summer seaside tradition - courtesy of a specially arranged visit by an ice cream van. This

gave them all enough of a kick to conclude the day’s training and turn their sights to the evening’s social activities which started out at Ashby’s Boutique Hotel for dinner & drinks. Ashby’s pride themselves by producing great dishes using fresh local ingredients and they did not disappoint! Attendees had the choice of a fabulous menu and even after the giant pastries, lunch and ice creams, they didn’t waste any time digging in. For anyone who has ever been to a JCI event they will know the social activities never end at dinner and JCI South’s Summerfest was no different - strangely though there were no pictures following dinner…

Drew commented “It was great to be able to put on a Southern region event that combined official training with community efforts but, best of all, was free to our members. I hope everyone had a fun and productive time!”. JCI Portsmouth President, Michelle Bustos, also added “JCI Portsmouth absolutely loved welcoming old JCI friends and new ones alike, to our great Waterfront City”.

14 September 2013:

On this day, JCI UK and its Senate both held their AGMs. The teams for next year 2014 were appointed and began their detailed planning. I am reminded how quickly one year passes into the next. Each Senate Chairman tries to do some things differently. This year I held a real determination to bring Senate and JCI UK into more productive relationship. How are we doing?

There was a very enthusiastic UK contingent of JCI members and Senators in Monaco at the European Conference. We were delighted to support 3 JCI UK members (Kay Purser, JCI Birmingham, James Lambert, JCI Southampton and Ricky Kothari JCI London) with financial bursaries. I believe that the 3 remaining bursaries will be taken up before the year is out. Well done! There have been some years when bursaries have not been taken up.

We also supported 4 LEAP participants - Ling Jin (JCI London), Oliver Hyde (JCI Barnsley), Gareth Carson (JCI Sheffield) and Kartik Rajput (JCI Liverpool). A follow-on

mentor programme with Senators is also being organised. I really hope that all these members will use their new inspirations to grow their local chambers.

I know that JCI UK has bags of talent and enthusiasm. You can do great things with your commitment and determination. The Queen’s award was a real honour and spur – now go out show what you can do! Good luck!

I hope to meet many of you in Leeds at National Convention in November. The conference is shaping up really well. Let’s generate some new perspectives from the session on ‘Future of Business’ and what this might mean for JCI UK and its members (and indeed Senators!).

Ilona Alcock There were a few clues before I left for this year’s European Academy that it was not going to be any usual trip. Firstly, there were no details provided of what we were going to be doing. Secondly, people started wishing me “good luck”, not “have a nice time” or “enjoy Sweden”, just “good luck”. Thirdly, previous delegates described it as life changing. Seriously? In four days?!

Well, it was only four days but it felt like a month! And not just because I was awake for pretty much all of it. The constant training and group activities mean that I now have an actual written plan (a first for me) for my year in 2014. I also now understand more about the international organisation, the importance of member-led projects and have picked up tangible ways of motivating different personalities either in my team or the wider community.

Some activities meant that I was thrown into situations where I had no clue what to do; which made me realise that it was ok not to achieve all our goals and that failure can still be a brilliant development opportunity, so long as it is managed well. I learned that all over Europe there are Deputy Presidents filled with concerns, ideas and an overwhelming determination to make JCI the best that it can be. And you know what? Those incredible people are now just a Facebook group, email or a Skype call away, which means that I now suddenly have an extended Council team, that will support me through

2013, 2014 and beyond! So get ready for 2014 as with people like this at the helm of the organisation it is going to be EPIC! And if you get chance to go to European Academy, or to any other event where you get know your international colleagues, make sure you go for it as it really is life changing.

Ben Hawley 14 Hours....That’s how much sleep I got from Thursday morning until Tuesday evening at European Academy. This meant that I was so tired on the Tuesday that at one point I thought I was hallucinating.

You’re probably thinking that getting such little sleep was self-inflicted, as with most JCI International events, but you would be wrong. OK, so there was some partying on the Thursday evening and I suppose the pool party on the Monday

until 3.30am wasn’t a compulsory session, but the vast majority was inflicted on me and my fellow European Academy delegates by the organising committee as we had loads of work to get through to make sure we graduated. For those of you that aren’t aware, JCI’s European Academy is a training weekend that is run in Gothenburg, Sweden each year. It’s run for the

incoming presidents of each local chamber, and this year I was lucky enough to be invited to attend as JCI Barnsley’s Deputy

President. The whole purpose of the weekend is to get the participants ready to undertake the daunting task of being the head of a local chamber and making a

success of their year.

This is achieved by making you work in teams and then forcing those teams into situations that are designed to push you to your limits and try to make the cracks show. It sounds harsh, but it’s surprisingly fun and enjoyable.

You get to learn some really good techniques about building a team, how to get the team to work effectively and other management tools that will make sure you’re as ready as possible to be a local president. All this is great, but for me, the most beneficial reason for attending is meeting the fantastic range of people from across Europe. I have

now met incoming local presidents from Germany, Turkey, Norway, Ireland, France, Belgium, Latvia, Iceland, Lithuania, Scotland and many more! I was also able to get to know my fellow UK deputy’s better which has brought us all closer together.

The weekend has really helped galvanise my vision for JCI Barnsley in 2014 and I am currently working hard on my plan, which will be revealed very soon! This plan is purely a framework and I want to work with the council team, senators and most importantly the members, to make sure it helps us all work towards a goal of continually improving JCI Barnsley, ourselves, and our local community whilst having fun at the same time.

In the words of our Local President, ‘let’s make a Memory’.

JCI Bradford has chosen this project because it is inline with our global partner, the United Nations’ number

one Millennium Development Goal (MDG) to address extreme poverty and

hunger.

MDGs not just target international issues but they include the UK.

Hundreds of people in Bradford go hungry everyday and poverty affects young children through to the elderly. With support from their community and projects like this people less fortunate and vulnerable can be helped.

Whilst this is the first project of this type JCI Bradford has run in recent years we are very experienced at running a similar scheme for disadvantaged children, the Secret Santa Appeal now in its 24th year.

We have had many schools in Bradford contact us to get involved so far and we look forward to updating you soon with the success

of the project.

Only seven more MDGs to go...

Liverpool’s First Public Speaking Competition

In 2012 JCI Barnsley had one of the biggest membership growths in history, going from 12 to 28. This increase was recognised at Regional, National and European awards for the most outstanding growth and development of a local chamber. The local team worded amazingly hard to make this happen but with the 2013 President relocating to Birmingham the hard work was only just beginning.

Starting the year with 27 members, the main aim for this year was to turn the chamber back into what it was and everyone knew it could be. With five full programs and an ambitious marketing plan, the team aimed for high engagement. In July and August, JCI Barnsley achieved its goal by seeing 24 of its 26 members at events. Over a three month period that increased to all 26 members!

The goal now is recruitment and get over the magic number of 30 members! With a new membership night held mid-September we managed to recruit five new members achieving our goal in one night.

JCI Liverpool has teamed up with the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce and the International Coaching Academy and delivered a course on improving your leadership skills, which was combined with JCI Liverpool’s annual public speaking competition.

Event organisers, JCI Liverpool, part of Junior Chamber International, are keen to help Liverpool’s young business talent to improve their leadership skills. President of JCI Liverpool, Kai Graf von Pahlen said: “The purpose of JCI is to provide development opportunities to young professionals so that they gain the confidence needed to become tomorrow’s

leaders. This course helped them do this.”

The course was delivered by John Haynes, Founder of the International Coaching Academy (ICA) and the principle coach on all ICA courses. He has been in the business of people development for over 30 years. Both ICA and Liverpool Chamber have been supporters of JCI Liverpool ever since its official launch in March 2013, which took place at Liverpool Town Hall. Melissa Bush, Events Co-ordinator at Liverpool Chamber, commented, “We are very pleased to have hosted this event as good leadership is such an important skill in today’s business world.”

The event also featured JCI

Liverpool’s annual public speaking competition which involved five JCI members competing against each other in a fun environment. Kai Graf von Pahlen commented, “Developing your Public Speaking skills is one of the most powerful things you can do to boost your confidence, visibility and career prospects.”

Each of the five JCI members delivered a 7 minute speech on one of the following topics:

- To me freedom of speech

means….. - Do we have gender equality in the UK? - Is JCI the leading global network of young active citizens? - This country relies on its army of volunteers! - An Englishman’s home is his castle.

The winner, Kartik Rajput now has the chance to attend JCI UK’s National Public Speaking Competition in November, where he will compete against other JCI members from across the country.

JCI Barnsley reach over 95% membership engagement!

JCI Birmingham President and Deputy receive official chainsThis summer has seen JCI Birmingham have a few events take place. The key aspect being the President, Kirstie Barnett, and Deputy President, Kay Purser, being presented the official chains at a recent networking event held in conjunction with the GVA, the UK’s largest independent commercial property consultant.

JCI members and Senators gathered to hear guest speaker, Brian Gambles, talk about the new Birmingham library in advance of its grand opening which took place on 3rd September. Special presentations were then given to award Kirstie and Kay with the chains. A great networking evening was had by all and it is hopeful that JCI members will receive a special tour of the new library in the New Year.

At the end of July, a cocktail evening with a twist took place, in which members enjoyed a Mad Hatters tea party but this included Gin- based cocktails! Members are also now clued up on the latest social trends, thanks to Dave Reed from Planet 9, a digital marketing agency, who spoke at this month’s personal development training session.

The year is not quite out yet so JCI Birmingham have a few more events lined up to see members through

to the festive period! This includes personal development training sessions covering LinkedIn training and time management

skills, Jaycees vs past JCI Birmingham members bowling night, a ‘No go Rio’ social at Rodizio Rico so members can sample authentic Brazilian cuisine in the heart of Birmingham, and finally a seasonal wander around the German Christmas Markets that come to the city centre each year.

Twinning is Winning

This summer’s annual JCI Belfast Charity Pub Quiz raised over £1100 for the Prince’s Trust. All funds raised went directly to the charity, who help change and improve young lives, and was part of JCI Belfast’s participation in the Million Makers fundraising challenge. The quiz was sponsored by Belfast stockbroker firm Cunningham Coates.

The summer event held at The Errigle Inn, Belfast was filled to capacity with a record crowd of over 150 people comprising over twenty five teams. Pulse PR, the winning team, triumphed to secure first place and received a case of wine.

JCI Belfast President, Richard O’Neill said “The night was a great success and it was fantastic to see such a high turn-out. Our members and supporters have helped raise a significant sum in support of The Prince’s Trust, and this has put us well on the way to our £10,000 target for the Million Makers fundraising challenge.”

JCI Sheffield was delighted to host friends from their twinned chamber JCI Mayo in July to coincide with the Tramlines music festival weekend. The weekend kicked off with an official reception at the Town Hall with the Lord Mayor, who was extremely interested in both the work of JCI and the areas of opportunity and also how quickly the twinning relationship had developed into such a strong bond.

Members enjoyed a spot of volunteering at Sheffield Museum on the Saturday, acting as stewards and guides at an art exhibition which soon helped get over any sore heads from dancing the night away the previous night.

Derek Reilly JCI Mayo Immediate Past President and

Deputy National President for JCI Ireland said “The Twinning Weekend was the highlight of my JCI year so far. It encompasses everything I love about JCI. We had 2 training sessions, volunteered at a local museum, attended a festival and of course enjoyed socialising to get to know each other better. I am already looking forward to next year when we can do it all again!”

The second JCI UK leadership programme, LEAP was successfully delivered in Sheffield on Friday 30 August until Sunday 1 September 2013.

The 25 delegates were from all parts of the UK, including a few international JCI members. They were split into groups to undertake a series of challenges, workshops and self-discovery activities. Each group delivered a presentation

outlining their ideas and plans for leading projects and events for JCI members to work on in their local communities.

Dan Senter, JCI UK LEAP Leader, said “It’s so inspiring to see how far our members have come in just one weekend. I’m looking forward to catching up with them in a few months’

time to see how they’re getting on”.

Remember those exciting games of Monopoly that lasted for four days and ended in an argument with Grandma over whether she was allowed to stick three hotels on Mayfair? Well, on Saturday 3 August 2013, JCI members from Cambridge, Southampton and London chambers teamed-up to re-live all of those classic moments in the form of a tour around the life-size Monopoly board that is London town... and this time Grandma was not invited!

Eager to pass Go, members met at a pub in Kings Cross station and proceeded to travel around London to as many of the real Monopoly stops as they could manage without breaking a sweat. In keeping with the capitalist principles of the theme, attendees paid

an entry fee, but this time the proceeds contributed towards the Nothing But Nets charitable campaign, rather than contributing towards a smug look on Grandma’s face.

Participants walked from Euston Road down Pentonville Road to Angel. From there the tube sent them directly to Bond Street, Oxford Street, Piccadilly, Coventry Street, Leicester Square, Trafalgar Square, Whitehall, Pall Mall, Mayfair and Park Lane. En route attendees encountered games, pubs, new and old friends, more pubs and some even amused the locals with the help of Monopoly-based props including a brief case, an iron and a dog.

Fortunately, no participants were sent to jail by a rather

pointy policeman with a whistle and unfortunately they discovered that Mayfair was not for sale for the modest sum of £400; London Underground would not accept one of those Community Chest cards that gives you the power to

jump to random parts of the Monopoly board as a legitimate method of payment (unless accompanied by a loaded oyster card); and there was no free parking, certainly not with easy access to both Vine Street and the Strand.

WE DID IT!If there was ever a project that captured the imagination of our members it was the Flamingo Foundation’s Bra Bank project collecting bras to be distributed to African women to help them establish new businesses.

Soraya Bowen, JCI UK’s Community Director, set a target of 1,000 bras to be collected by 14th September and we managed to achieve a grand total of 3,759 bras.

It was an incredible project whereby members used a whole multiude of ideas, events and activites to collect bras. With some special mentions for extraordinary achievements for Katie Ogley of JCI Doncaster who collected the most bras, Debbie Worthington of JCI Barnsley who managed to secure a donation of 1,270 bras from ASDA and JCI Sheffield for the chamber that collected the most bras.

Fiona Silvester of JCI Sheffield achieved amazing press coverage locally which included the cartoon on the right hand side of the page.
