JCU Brisbane is the place where talent is recognised and awarded the right way. They have friendly professors encouraging me every step of the my journey that pumps me up with confidence that I'm doing alright and I can continue to do better!

I love the fact that I can explore my options while enrolling for subjects. I’ve enjoyed all the subjects of IT so far and in particular the MBA subjects, that I feel might have opened new doors for me. I’ve had the chance to strengthen my abilities in subjects I have dealt with in my bachelors, and I also got to learn new concepts which helped me realize what I find challenging and I need to work on. “My university experiences at JCU Brisbane have been amazing. Upon doing the Master of Education/ Master of Business Administration program I was exposed to learning subjects that talked curriculum, pedagogy and different kinds of learning techniques used today. It was fairly new to me and I felt like it enhanced my knowledge. JCU Brisbane is a very welcoming place, and from the very first day, I felt really warm and at home here because of the small class size, and all the events that keep happening, this gave me the opportunity to study new things and also meet and make new friends.”

"An Information Technology degree is valuable simply because a lot of businesses need a lot of people with IT skills. The Australian Computer Society is projecting a shortfall of something like 1000 computer security and data mining specialists for the next few years.

The industry is crying out for people. New technology can come along, and the software can be copied, but getting people to actually drive it cannot simply be replicated, it’s something

that must be trained. Our IT degrees enable our students to fill these positions, and open their eyes to the potential of what’s possible in this sector. Our students enjoy a campus where students are not just numbers in a crowd. Here students know who the lecturer is, and the lecturer can recognise every student's face. It is a much more personable experience that enhances their learning."Dr Paul Darwen Associate Dean, Information Technology

"After graduating from JCU Brisbane I started my own business, a technology company specialising in mobile & web app, cloud computing, software engineering and now expanding our capabilities into block chain and artificial intelligence. My time at JCU Brisbane helped me a lot to start my rapidly expanding business. Coming from a middle class family without any business background, I found my studies very helpful in launching my career and preparing me for a successful career. The very practical nature of the subjects like the Research Project, ICT projects combined with the support from Joblinx to secure an internship working with an IT company were invaluable. This is where I learnt how to build a cloud solution for a real business. The professors are really helpful and want the students to be successful in their lives. Looking back, choosing JCU Brisbane was one of the best decisions."

Important Information

Student VisasHow to obtain an Australian visa for study at JCU BrisbaneYou or your Agent (on your behalf) will apply for your visa directly with the Department of Home Affairs. All international students apply for a single student visa (subclass 500), regardless of their chosen course of study. All student visa applications are lodged online. An immigration risk framework is used to guide the evidence of English language and financial capacity that a student needs to provide with their visa application. Key requirements for student visa (subclass 500):• Genuine temporary entrant (GTE) requirement• Enrolment in a registered course of study

• Financial capacity and English language proficiency

• Health and character• Health insurance• No debt to the Australian GovernmentFor more information, please refer to The Department of Home Affairs www.homeaffairs.gov.au Working as a StudentUnder Australian immigration regulations, students on a student visa may work up to 40 hours per fortnight during university teaching periods and without restriction during university vacations.Permission to work in Australia will be automatically included when the student is granted a student visa.

For further information regarding your working rights please refer to www.fairwork.gov.au

Working Rights for PartnersIf a student’s spouse is joining them, they will also be able to work whilst the student is studying in Australia and can apply for a permission to work visa. The work conditions for the spouse will vary depending on the degree that is being studied. Bringing FamilySpouses and children can join the student in Australia but each family member must be added to the student visa application, and certain conditions will apply depending on the age of each family member. If the children will be attending school while in Australia, school fees will need to be paid for them. For more information, visit: www.eqi.com.au

ESOS Act and Tuition Protection ServiceAs a provider of education services to international students in Australia, James Cook University is required to comply with the Education Services for Overseas Students Act (ESOS Act) and the National Code of Practice for Registration Authorities and Providers of Education and Training to Overseas Students (The National Code). The ESOS legislation and National Code, specify minimum standards for the delivery of courses to students in Australia studying on a student visa and regulate what information must be given to existing and prospective international students, what support must be provided to existing students, what records are kept and what information is to be given to government agencies about international students. For more information visit the ESOS Act webpage.JCU’s Student Fee Payments and Refund Policy for International Students applies to overseas students who do not commence their studies with JCU, or withdraw before their course is completed. The policy sets out the circumstances in which a student is entitled to a refund as required under the ESOS Act, and can be found at: www.jcu.edu.au/policy/student-services

Important InformationThe Tuition Protection Service (TPS) is a placement and refund service for international students studying on a student visa which also operates under the ESOS Act. On the rare occasions that a provider is unable to deliver a course an international student has paid for and does not meet its legal obligations to make alternative

course replacements or provide a refund, the TPS will assist students to find an alternative place or, if this is not possible, provide a refund of any unspent tuition fees. For further information see: www.tps.gov.au

Deferral, Temporary Suspension or Cancellation of EnrolmentThe ESOS National Code and student visa conditions contain restrictions on when students, or JCU, can defer, suspend or cancel a student enrolment. Deferring commencement of study, or taking a leave of absence once studies have commenced can only take place when there are compassionate or compelling reasons for doing so. A “compassionate or compelling reason” is something which is beyond the student’s control and which has, or will have, an impact on academic progress or wellbeing. The university may suspend a student temporarily, enforcing a break from study, in certain circumstances. For more information on deferral, suspension and cancellation of study see our website.
