“I have an abiding passion for wild lands, ranging from the mountain landscapes with their fleeting light conditions, to the desert and dark forests. I have sought to capture images of wilderness that can generate the drama of the sweeping landscapes or the quite moments that touch your soul. These images are the emotional thunderclaps of the mountains and glaciers, with their shadow and light and serenity of the forest of quiet desert...all while chasing the light. This love developed, in part, from my years as a high altitude expedition

climber and professional mountain guide. The images range from Patagonia, the Andes of Peru, Alaska, Yukon, Iceland, and the mountains and deserts of the West. Over 300 images have been published or used, some in major advertising campaigns for Ascent, Time, Newsweek, Money, Forbes, and a number of in-flight airline magazines, various outdoor catalogs and in hospitals and engineering and law firms. In 1988 I was the official photographer for the Cowboys on Everest expedition in addition to being a high-altitude team leader. On Everest, I field tested an early digital prototype camera for Canon. My images were back, and for two months were shown on CNN and ABC News.” Jeb Schenck lives in Thermopolis, Wyoming. He is the CEO of Knowa Inc. and Syngnosis. He is an Adjunct Professor and teaches graduate courses on Neuroeducation (how the brain learns) at the University of Wyoming, College of Education, and instructor with University of Montana-Northern. Jeb also does research, acts as a consultant, and is a workshop presenter in Experiential Learning and Teaching. He is the Principal Owner of Schenck Photography and produces fine art photography, personal/family portraits, and class/family reunion photographs. He has been teaching accredited high school, college, and adult leisure photography since 1972. Jeb’s photographs will be on exhibit and for sale from May 31, 2018 to August 12, 2018 at the Washakie Museum & Cultural Center.

The summer exhibit explores how archaeology is used to uncover the past, an “archaeology 101.” The exhibit will explain the questions archaeologist ask and how they go about solving them. It will explore the methods, ethics, and importance of archaeology and protecting cultural resources with text panels, artifacts, and visuals. Some of the topics explored will be:

- What is archaeology? - Why is archaeology important?

- How do archaeologists figure out how old something is? - Archaeology in the Big Horn Basin and Wyoming.

- Methods and techniques in archaeological field and lab work. - At the end, test your knowledge by answering questions based on an example excavation.

Bodies of William Gallagher and “Blind Bill” Hoolihan

killed in 1893 were found on

Mormon Bishop Mads Cottrell Family Ranch in 1978

Shared with the Museum from Dr. Carl Cottrell

In 1978, the g r a v e s o f W i l l i a m Gallagher and “Blind Bill” were found on the p rope r t y o f Mormon Bishop Mads Cottrell ( D r . C a r l Cottrell’s father) around Meeteetse, Wyoming while a back hoe operator was doing some road work in the area. Archaeologist Bob Edgar was called in from Cody to assist in identifying the bodies. “Blind Bill” was buried in a plain wooden coffin and his friend Gallagher was buried in a cedar coffin. Gallagher’s remains were better preserved including remnants of some of his clothing. “Blind Bills” patch was still covering his eye socket.

The men were reburied side-by-side in Trail Town in December 1978 with Bishop Cottrell and his family (including a young Carl) singing hymns at the funeral. The archaeology from this story will be shared with the public in the summer exhibition “Digging and Discovery”. The Museum would like to thank Dr. Carl Cottrell for sharing this story from his family’s history.

Last summer the Washakie Museum & Cultural Center created the exhibition Ghost Towns and Tales of the Forgotten Past. Part of that exhibit was perhaps the most famous story of “The Woman in Blue,” a tale of love, betrayal, and murder from the Meeteetse area. A synopsis of that story goes...William Gallagher arrived in Arland in 1891 and worked as a cowboy for the Pitchfork Ranch. Gallagher had a reputation for being a cruel and vicious man. The lovely “Woman in Blue,” Belle Drewry, was an Arland prostitute and Gallagher’s girl. Belle started seeing Bill Wheaton which angered G a l l a g h e r — B e l l e a n d Wheaton were afraid of Gallagher. On March 14,1893 Wheaton shot and killed Gallagher at a ranch on Meeteetse Creek. “Blind Bill” Hoolihan, a good friend of Gallagher, swore revenge for the death of his friend. He never fulfilled that vow as a few days later he was found shot in the back by an unknown assassin. Although it was believed that Wheaton killed “Blind Bill”, it was never proven.

Perfect for beginners and novices

to the world of watercolors. Brenda

Trippel will guide students through

the basics of watercolor.

Brenda has always loved to draw, but did not begin painting until she was

an adult. She loves the fluidity of watercolor, the “happy accidents” as the

colors and water flow together on paper. As an artist she is

especially interested in the interplay of light, shadow, and color. Artists

that inspire her include the Impressionists and Albert Bierstadt. She

greatly enjoyed teaching art for seven years in Worland Elementary

Schools before becoming the Family and Consumer Service Teacher at Worland High School. Even when teaching, art is

important to help her students explore art in fashion design, interior design, and the culinary arts.

To register for the class contact Becca Ward at (307)347-4102 or [email protected]. Registration deadline:
