My name is Jeff Scott. My wife Ireneand I have been enjoying fine cars foralmost twenty years and are now joinedby our 11 year old son in our car hobby. For me it all started when I was 18 yearsold and lived in New York City. Iworked in a CB radio shop owned bymy elder brother. We installed and soldCB radios and car phones. Back in the80’s to get a car phone you had to beput on a waiting list and had a very longwait to receive a phone number. Not tomention the cost back then was astro-nomical. One day while working in theshop, a RR Corniche came into the shopto have a car phone installed. I was giventhe car to install the phone. As I startedto take apart the car, I noticed it waslike no other car I had ever worked on.The fit, finish and craftsmanship of thedoor moldings, carpets, roof liner, etc.were twice as heavy as any other car Ihad ever dissembled for phone installa-tion. What typically was a three to fourhour job took me one and a half days. Iknew it had to be 100% perfect in ev-ery detail. After the job was completed,my brother had me clean the car andtake it for a test drive to make sure therewere no rattles and the phone worked. Also he told me to fill the car with gas.I was 18 years old and driving a RollsRoyce in NYC and I remember havingeveryone stare at me as I drove by. Iremember asking my brother what sucha car cost, and upon hearing the answermy jaw dropped and I wondered whatthe owner did for a living to be able to

have such a beautiful British work of art.For the next few months all I could thinkabout was the car as I drove to work inmy Chevy Vega. Many months passedand I started buying books on British carsand set about learning about them. I thensaid to myself one day I would like toown a Rolls Royce. I figured if I had toset a goal, it would be to be the best andmost successful I could be in life and ownthe best car I had ever encountered. Sixyears later I left my brother’s shop andstarted pursuing a long time passion ofmine, jewelry making and sales. I at-tended the GIA in NYC to study aboutgems.

When I was 24 years old, I sold an apart-ment in NYC that my parents had givento me and took the money and startedmy own small jewelry shop. I workedmany 12 hour days, six days a week. Ireinvested every penny I made back intothe store and built it up. As things startedgoing well, I never forgot about my questfor a high end British car. I also had aninterest in Italian cars. I remember Ibought a new Datsun, took care of it andevery year or so I traded for somethingnew. No matter what I bought I trea-sured it and treated it like it was a RollsRoyce. About six years ago my wife andI moved our company, Jeffrey Scott FineJewelry, to Amherst, NH. We wanted abetter life, cleaner and greener, for ouryoung son, who is now eleven and lovesto do car things with the family. In sixyears our business has grown faster inNH than even over twenty years in ourother location.

About four years ago, I bought my first

super car, a Porsche 911, very nice andfast. However, it was very small, espe-cially the back seat. I still had in the backof my mind that I wanted the RollsRoyce.

I then went into a Ferrari California. Thiswas a very big step for me. The car wasagain very fast and sexy, but still reallysmall and hard on the back, and a tight

fit for my son. I then said I would go formy first British car and bought a newBentley GTC. I was in awe, my firstBritish car, so much different from any-thing I had ever had and loved it. I hadit for three months and four hundred mileswhen the dealer called and said they hadbought out a collection with a 2009 RollsRoyce Phantom Drop Head Coupe with2800 miles on it, almost as good as newout of the show room. And they told methey would take back the Bentley.

I could not sleep thinking about it. Ithen went to the dealer to take a look. And when I sat inside my draw droppedand I was speechless. I then took it fora ride. At that moment I knew my dream

Quest for our Rolls Royce

By the time you read this, we will havealready had our First-of-the-SeasonBCNH Drive. It will be interesting tosee what the turnout is. John Bowe -the organizer of this Drive – has someconcern that he is going to have “morecars than he can handle.” If the Cars &Coffee on April 16 is any guide, he maybe right. As mentioned elsewhere in thisissue, we had about 75 cars at thatevent.

We have talked recently about the factthat the current size of the Club (now at236 Memberships) allows us some flex-ibility that we didn’t have when wewere smaller. Not only can we now holdmore events – and of greater variety –but for Drives like this one there mayactually be an advantage to breakingthem up into two groups.

I have often quoted the old saw that“They only make two sizes, too smalland too big.” There are several varia-tions of that adage and I have often heardindividual members “comment” (notcomplain you understand) that thespeeds that we drive on rides are either“too slow for sports cars” or “too fastto appreciate the scenery of the routechosen.”

Well, as the size of the turnouts in-creases, we may now find that it makes

sense to break up into two groups withthe “Let’s go fast” group heading out firstand then the “Let’s Smell the Roses”group leaving shortly after. In fact, forDrives that will end up at a restaurant forlunch or dinner, the restaurant may actu-ally prefer NOT to have 50 people allarrive (and expect to be fed) at the sametime. I know that, with the cafeteria ser-vice at the Green Bean, it is very pos-sible that the last people in line will stillbe in line when the first ones are finishedwith their meal and ready to go home.

We will do a variation of this for the Lu-pine Festival on June 11 where one groupwill take a westerly route paralleling –but avoiding – I-93 and an Eastern Groupwill go up through Rochester andConway and then across the Kanc. Bysplitting the groups this way, our Mem-bers that live in varying parts of the Statecan join up along the way with which-ever group passes nearest to where theylive.

Over the past year we have seen atten-dance at the Manchester Meetings climbto an average of 50 to 60 Members permonth. I have often said that the peoplethat do the most, have the most fun– and it’s pretty obvious from thosemeeting that the 50-60 Members therehave been having a lot of fun.

When you add the Lakes Region andNorth Council meetings, instead ofhaving “just” 50-60 people getting the

full benefit of Membership in BCNH,there are 70 - 75 people that do. Al-most a 50% increase.

With the addition of Members from theNew England MG Car Club in Maine,we hope we will be able to also get aSeacoast Region Council up and run-ning this year. Wouldn’t it be great if100 fellow car buffs could have thechance to get as much out of the Clubas the “Regulars” from theManchester Ar ea have in recentyears?

Watch the Calendar Section of the Boot,Hood and Bonnet on the Events Pageor on the www.bcnh.org website to seeall of the outings we already have sched-uled for this season – and go back oftento see as additional “opportunities” to getout and use your cars are added.

We haven’t had many events up Northbefore, mostly because those of us thathave planned events just don’t know thatpart of the state well enough. Over thenext month or two I think you will findsome new events that are organized bythe Lakes Region and North Coun-cil and sited in their part of the State. Those events will be open to allMembers, regardless of where youlive, just like all the rest of the eventsare open to all Members.

On some weekends there may be sev-eral different events scheduled in differ-

Manchester MeetingMinutes

It was a cold and snowy night when theApril BCNH meeting was held on April4th at the usual MoeJoe’s. The call toorder from Prime Minister Bob Mitchellwas on time at 7:00 pm.

There were 33 brave BCNH souls inattendance. Everyone complainedabout the weather when they showedup in boots, jackets, hats scares andmittens.

The secretary’s report and thetreasurer’s report were accepted asprinted in the newsletter. There weretwo new NEMGCC members in atten-dance – Norm of Brit Bits fame withmultiple cars and Ben Morong with a1970 Midget. Also in attendance wasa guest who will become a member;Norm Fournier who has a 1972 TR6. Welcome to all.

We started by reviewing the calendarof events. The NEMGCC has a“Blessing of the Fleet” scheduled forMay 1st. We start with a social hour atthe Oak St Bistro in Alfred Maine at10:00 am for a social hour (to me thismeans their great Bloody Mary’s) andbrunch at 11:00. From there we willhead off to the monastery for the bless-ing. All cars that attend are guaranteedcarefree driving for the season. You willneed to RSVP for the brunch if you planto attend. Please email or call me (603-490-6115 or [email protected])The Oak St Bistro will need to makesure they have enough staff to cover us. From the brunch we will take a shortdrive to the Monastery and becomeblessed… You can simply join in at themonastery if you prefer. They have agood bakery if you are one of thoseearly breakfast people and just need asnack. The blessing is by the Broth-ers of Christian Instruction, 132 ShakerHill Road, Alfred Maine.

We then reviewed the rest of the calen-dar – see the printed version elsewherein this newsletter.

Norm from Brit Bits talked about a July10th event in Portsmouth – the 4th annualclassic car show, Details to follow. Alsohe told us about a Nova Scotia trip thathe is leading. The trip is about 7 dayslong. If you need more information andwant to join in please contact Norm atBrit Bits.

Diana gave us an update on the Showof Dreams. We are looking for spon-sors – if you have any ideas please let usknow. For $100 you can get your nameor your business name listed on the backof the event T-shirt. Let us know if youwant to do that.

The porta potty not 50-50 was won byWade Dos Santos who donated the $40back for a total of $160 to the fund. Thank you Wade!

ent parts of the State – and out-of-State.All BCNH Members will have the free-dom to choose which of those eventsappeal most to them and to attend theones that do. Over time I hope we willsee substantial “mixing” between thegroups – thus giving each of us an op-portunity to meet more new friends.

Go BCNH!!!!

As stated in previous Prime MinisterMissives, I know that we run the risk ofscheduling “too much.” But I’d ratherhave members only able to make it tohalf of the many events because of“scheduling conflicts,” than to not makeit to any because there were too fewopportunities.

It’s going to be a great season for BCNH.

IF YOU HAVE OTHER IDEAS – LETUS KNOW.

Also please think every once in a whileabout contributing an article to theNewsletter.

1. When you attend an event – and havea good time – tell the rest of us about it.

2. When you are reminiscing about whenyou bought your current car – or a pre-vious one – and how much joy it hasbrought to your life – tell us the story.

3. If you’ve had a particularly vexingproblem – or have gratefully “found afix” for one – tell us about that, too.

4. If you find material in other sourcesthat you think our membership wouldenjoy or benefit from, send in the refer-ence. Editors Chuck and Diane Connorswill check for reprint authorization fromthe source and print it if we can.

By Bob Mitchell Prime MinisterApril 16, 2016 – but nobody was talk-ing about Taxes!! One of our “tag lines”at Historic Motor Sports is “It’s all aboutthe Cars” – and certainly most of theconversations were. The total in atten-dance during the three hours between8:00 and 11:00 was somewhere around220 people. Considering that we hadabout 75 people at the first Coffee &Cars back in November, it’s clear thatpeople have started to look forward tothese monthly opportunities to get to-gether with friends.

As usual, there was no Agenda and noProgram – just a chance to convert morestrangers into friends.

What was different this time was thatthere was more to see out in the parking

lot than there was inside the building. Infact my guess is that there were somepeople that never did make it into thebuilding at all. The weather was beauti-ful and we must have had 50 to 75 carsparked wherever they could find space.

Show of Dreams (SOD) CommitteeChair Bob Stanley called that commit-tee to order upstairs in the “BCNH Club-house Room” at about 11:00. The Com-mittee has found that this is a great time

to accomplish all there is to be done (seeminutes elsewhere in this issue) withouthaving to schedule yet another meeting

at yet another place.

It was 1:00 in the afternoon by the timewe again locked the doors at HMS.Glance over the pictures to see someof the eye candy that there was to see.

Next month’s Coffee & Cars will be onSaturday, May 14, 2016 at 8:00 am –with the Spring Tech Session (on Car-buretors) starting at about 10:00

The number of British Cars of NewHampshire club members has grown byleaps and bounds over the past fewyears. North CouncilMinutes

Meeting Notes 2016 April 21

The April meeting of the BCNH North-ern Council met this past Thursday, April21st which just happened to be theQueen’s 90th birthday. God Save theQueen!

The knock off hammer came down at7:03 pm with many discussions alreadyunderway among the 19 people in at-tendance about the upcoming, jampacked, amazing calendar of events. With the warm weather several of themembers took advantage and arrivedtop down in their British cars and onemotorcycle.

Introductions went around the room withtwo new car enthusiasts that joined thegroup from the Penacook area, MikeWright and Frank Marsh. Mike ownsa TR6 which Minister Karl had left aBCNH card on his windshield and hewas curious enough to come see whatall the fun is about. This led to NeilFlaherty reminiscing about how BobMitchell had “absconded” him in a park-ing lot to join the group. GeorgeSherback took advantage of the beau-tiful evening and drove his TR8 up tothe meeting.

Happy news for Bob & Diana, they arethe proud grandparents of a healthy, happy baby granddaughter!

Paul and Don brought along some hand-outs for the Castle in the Clouds antiqueand classic car event which will be onSaturday, July 9th from 10am-3pm. Thisis a beautiful venue for the car show andall cars registered will receive free en-trance to the Castle.

Minister Karl went over several of thedates for upcoming events which are onthe calendar (thank you Sue). The onechange being for the Hobbs Brewerytour on May 21st. This event sponsored

by Bob & Kim Dougherty will still berun but the club Motorsport piece willbe pushed back due to paving of thetrack sometime in June. Bob has de-cided to make a gimmick rally which willstart at the “Habitat for Humanity Re-store” at 583 Tenney Mountain Highwayin Plymouth. Frank McClaine of “Habi-tat for Humanity” will have coffee &donuts at 9:00 am and bathrooms willbe available. Drivers will set off at 10amfor about a 1.5 hour drive ending atHobbs Brewery in West Ossipee, NH.As an incentive each member that bringsan item to donate to the Habitat Restorewill get an additional 5 points in the rally.Bob spoke with Jorden at the HobbsBrewery and they will set up the sundeck for our group. An email will besent out for an RSVP request to get ahead count.

Prime Minister Bob then took the floorand covered all the events coming up thatwould require some preplanning and res-ervations, an email blast was sent out withall the dates and information. Pleasecheck your calendars and get your res-ervations in soon!

We then got our first look at the twoBCNH car badge samples that Bobbrought with him. They both came outreally nice, “I do think we are relativelysafe in ordering 100 each of the two dif-ferent badges. The 50/50 split of Verti-cal and Horizontal mounting hardwareseems about right.”

We finished going over the calendar andMinister Karl challenged the group to agame of trivia about the Queen Mum.Once again Norma and her group roseto the challenge and guessed the mostcorrect answers to win the first prize, anextraordinarily valuable bottle of vino. The second place prize of equal valuewent to Pete & Linda Wirth along withMike Sweet. Everyone enjoyed somebirthday cake, strawberry coveredcheesecake without candles because theQueen Mum chose to be a party pooper

and didn’t show, wasn’t present to blowthem out. The hammer came down at8:25pm and then we retired to the park-ing lot to ogle the cars.

Ian & Christine AthertonFreedom, NH1975 MGB & 2004 Jaguar XJ8

of over 30 years ago had come true. Thecar was a “bespoke” car with customred inside, burled elm wood, stainlesshood and custom crystal lady hood or-nament. It has a few special features in-cluding suicide doors, umbrellas thatpop out of the doors, a humidor and afull picnic set in the trunk. I now haveowned the car for a few months and havedriven a few hundred miles. As theweather improves I will use it on week-ends.

I was searching on line looking to join

some car clubs. I joined the Rolls Royceclub but when I came across the BritishCar Club of NH I knew I had to join. Ican’t wait to see and meet all of you withmy family.
