Car of the Month

IT’S MY CAR, REALL Y, I JUSTCAN’T DRIVE HER

by Tricia Thompson

In the early ’70s my father purchased aused, red, Sunbeam Alpine and I immedi-ately fell in love with the car. I was thir-teen years old at the time. I guess it tookus all by surprise that he would even buythe car because he was such a practicalman. But he was really tickled with it.He would take me places in it, and I lovedbeing in the car and spending time withhim. Well, he drove it for a couple ofyears before passing it on to my olderbrother. Shortly after I got my license, mybrother decided to sell the car; I wantedto buy it but he wouldn’t wait for me tosave up enough money. I was terribly dis-appointed. In retrospect, I think my fa-ther might have had a hand in that deci-sion. Looking back on it now, I think myfather knew these cars were not veryreliable and probably not very safe or in-expensive to maintain.

After I married Keith in 1978, I mentionedthe car and what had happened and hepromised to buy me one someday. A fewyears after that, we were in New Jerseyfor my father’s funeral and spoke withan old high school friend following theservice. The car story came up when wewere sharing remembrances of my dad,and my friend mentioned that he had ared Triumph for sale. We went to look ather, and although it wasn’t a Sunbeam,we simply had to bring her home to NH.She was only fourteen years old and wasin good shape. Soon after, I learned todrive a standard, but was dismayed to dis-cover my effort was in vain; I couldn’t

reach the pedals!

Keith ended up driving her occasionallyuntil we had a house and children and notime or money for a “hobby” car. For along while she was garaged or sitting inthe yard unused; occasionally Keith gother running and drove her a bit again butshe really needed work and there werealways too many other things to do.

About 6 or 7 years ago Keith said shewas getting a little rust and we reallyneeded to decide if we were going to fixher up or sell her. I wanted very much tokeep her but, knowing Keith, I knew ev-ery time he did something with her I would

hear about his efforts. Since she wasreally “my car”, whenever he worked onher or had to buy parts, it became, “yourcar is costing us time and money andtrouble.” So I said , “sell her!” Now,this was a smart maneuver on my part.It really pays to know your marital part-ner. I took a gamble on what his responsewould be to my throwing down the gauntletand saying, “Sell her!” I was pretty surehe didn’t want to sell her , but still I heldmy breath until he expressed dismay atthe very idea. I had taken a gamble and Ihad won. But, I could have lost the caraltogether. Now the car would get theattention she needed, but it would be HIS

“boondoggle” instead of MY “boon-doggle”.

Keith began by replacing the front shocks. One thing led to another and he ended uprebuilding the entire front end, springs andall. But then she was lopsided! The frontrode so high that the car looked as thoughshe was about to be launched into orbit. So started the rebuild of the rear end.Again, one thing led to another and thenext thing I knew, the motor was out andthe garage was filling up with parts that,a short time before, were attached insome fashion to the car. It’s amazing howmuch space such a small car can take upwhen it is in a million pieces. Skip aheadsix years and she has now had a com-plete frame-off rebuild with Keith doingas much of the work as possible. We didhave her professionally painted keepingher Signal Red. Keith put her back to-gether with much attention to keeping heras original as he could. Not bad for some-one who had never worked on a car be-fore. She passed inspection in July of 2011and we have been having a fun time withher since.

Sitting at our first little car show inAmherst, NH, we realized that in thethirty years that we owned her we hadnever seen another TR250. We knewthat they were relatively rare. Therewere just over 8 thousand of them made. Some background: the 250 was actuallythe transition car between the four cylin-der TR4 and the six cylinder TR6. InEngland and everywhere else it wascalled a TR5. It has the body of the TR4and motor of the TR6. So we decided tosee if we could find some other TR250s.Our car needed some friends. We rem-edied this by going to a British car show

Prime Minister’s Missive

It is an honor to have been re-electedPrime Minister of the British Cars of NewHampshire club for one more “Term.”What a wonderful club it is.

Many clubs (not just car clubs) have beenexperiencing declining membership in re-cent years. Not only are we growing, but our growth is not “just on paper.” Wehave a very active group in which a higherthan normal percentage of the membersactually participate.

Maybe that’s because we have so manyopportunities to participate. It is our mem-bers that plan and participate in:

1. Regular Meeting

2.Tech Sessions

3.Sunday Dinner Drives

4.Car Shows

a. Our own Show of Dreams and

b. Other shows hosted by other clubs and organizations

5. Murder Mystery Tours

6. The Queen’s Birthday Party

7. The Club’s Birthday Party

8. The Annual Holiday Cheers Party

9. The list goes on.

Oh, and did I mention that we have justabout the best club newsletter of any clubout there? A GREAT DEAL of the creditfor that goes to our editors John Gieseand Lin dos Santos, but they are the edi-tors, they don’t actually write the articles.THE MEMBERS SUPPLY THE COPY.I strongly encourage you to contribute asmuch material as you can to the News-letter. John and Lin are always lookingfor Car-of-the-Month or other featurearticles.

1. When you attend an event andhave a good time, tell the rest of usabout it.

2. When you are reminiscing aboutwhen you bought your current car, ora previous one, and how much joy ithas brought to your life, tell us the story.

3. If you’ve had a particularly vexingproblem or have gratefully “found afix” for one, tell us about that too.

4. If you find material in other sourcesthat you think our membership wouldenjoy or benefit from, send in the ref-erence. John and Lin will check forreprint authorization from the sourceand print it if they can.

5. If you take a trip with your Britishcar, tell us the story.

We are looking forward to another greatyear. We hope to work with the NewEngland Region of the Sports Car Clubof America (SCCA) this summer to or-ganize some more formal Road Rallies. We will try again to pull together a tail-gate party at the polo games in Hampton.

IF YOU HAVE OTHER IDEAS, LETUS KNOW. The more WE do the moreWE get to do.

Remember:

There is no “they”, there’s only “we.”

There is no “them”, there’s only “us.”

So Saith Prime Minster Bob

Minutes

Happy Birthday BCNHEach year at our February Meeting we celebrate those brave souls who

got together some twenty-one years ago and founded the BCNH club. In

case you haven’t noticed, we are a very social club. The Club Birthday

Party is the first of at least three “official” parties that we have each year.

• The Club Birthday Party in February

• The Queen’s Birthday Party in June

• The Holiday Cheers Party in December

That’s not to mention the fact that virtually any time we get together it’s

“an excuse for a Party.” This year “the party place” will be the La Festa

Brick & Brew (see www.lafestabrickandbrew.com/) on Central Ave. in

Dover. We’ll have a room to ourselves so we can mingle and, well,

socialize!

That good-hearted guy, John Giese has agreed once again to foot the bill

(as Chancellor of the Exchequer) for Pizza and soft drinks. Hard drinks,

beer and wine will also be available at your cost. There will also, of

course, be a BIG Birthday Cake (from Harvey’s Bakery in Dover.)

So. Don’t go to the Weathervane on Feb 6 – we won’t be there.

The Party will be at:

La Festa Brick & Brew

300 Central Ave

Dover NH

Time: 6:00 (Parking Meters stop at 7:00 so only pay for an hour)

It’s a Pizza Party!

Putting A Car Into Storage

Reprinted from Moss Motors

Overview

You can’t really talk about bringing a carout of storage without talking about howto put it up for an extended period. Theprocess of bringing a car out of storagewill depend to some extent on how longthe car has been idle. It is obvious that acar that has been sitting in a barn for 30years will need more than a car that hasbeen up on blocks for 6 months. It is per-haps less obvious that much depends onhow the car was put away.

Putting a Car Into Storage

If you’re covering the vehicle, use a carcover that will allow moisture to escape.Any plastic or other waterproof materialwill trap moisture on the paintwork. If youare storing the vehicle outside, be advisedthat no car covers exist that will replacea garage. Cars stored outside also becomea haven for all kinds of creatures, mostof whom will be lousy tenants. Make alist of the steps taken to ready the car forstorage, and leave it in the car. Not a badidea to include your notes for “bringing itback to life.” That way, you won’t besearching high and low for the informa-tion when that time comes.

Tune Up

Why on earth would you tune a car thatis not going to be driven? The purposehere is to stop the guessing games thatcome next time you try to start the car. Ifeverything is in good

working order when you stop driving thecar, sorting out a problem next season willbe easy because you know the basicswere in good order.

Battery

Disconnect the battery, and remove itfrom the car. Inspect the area where thebattery lives. Clean the area carefully witha solution of baking soda and water (2tablespoons in 2 pints of water) to neu-tralize any battery acid. Rinse it well. Drythe area completely with a hair dryer. Takecare of any rust you discover. Back to

the battery. Clean the battery case andterminals with the baking soda solution.Find a place that will remain cool (but notfreeze) and dry. If you have a non-sealedbattery, top up the electrolyte level withdistilled water if needed. Do not overfill.Use a battery maintenance device (likethe 386-245) to keep the battery(s) fullycharged. These are essentially small bat-tery chargers (about the size of a paper-back book) that plug into a normal 110Voutlet. If the battery voltage drops onevolt, it will come on and stay on until thebattery is fully charged again. The alter-native would be to hook the battery up toa “regular” battery charger once or twicea month for an overnight charge at 4amps. Either way, keeping the batteryfully charged will prevent sulfation, whichcan render a battery useless in a matterof months, and it will eliminate the possi-bility of the battery freezing, which wouldalso ruin the battery.

Brakes

Release the handbrake and chock thewheels. Brake shoes can become firmlyrusted to the drums in a matter of months. If you are using glycol based brake fluid,be aware of the incredible ability it has toabsorb moisture out of the air. Glycolbased brake fluid should be completelyreplaced every 18 to 24 months. If thefluid has been in the car for over a year, drain and refill with fresh fluid before youput the car in storage. (For a comprehen-sive article on brake fluid, click here.)

Cooling System

The coolant should be no more than 30%to 50% antifreeze. Pure water transfersheat much better than any antifreeze/water mix, but antifreeze raises the boil-ing point and, as the name implies, pre-vents the coolant from freezing. The pro-tection provided is dependent on the ageof the coolant; as it ages, it becomes lesseffective. If the coolant is over 1 yearold, drain and refill the system using aname brand antifreeze designed for usein older cars. (Some modern anti-freezeformulations designed for aluminum en-gines or radiators adversely affect oldBritish engines.)

Body & Paint

Carefully remove accumulated road gritand dirt from the nooks and crannies inthe fender wells. Left alone, rust and cor-rosion will be the inevitable result. Washthe car thoroughly, including the under-side of the car. Dry the car completely.Use a top quality automotive wax andapply it to all the painted and chrome sur-faces, polishing with a soft clean cloth. The wax is essential to keeping moistureaway from the chrome and the bodywork.Use wax on the chrome trim, not a“chrome polish.” Most commercialchrome polish has some abrasive ele-ments and they are to be avoided. Minutescratches in the chrome are where rustand corrosion attack first.

Oil & Lubrication

Oil has an effective life, and even if a caris not driven it will deteriorate over time.Perform a complete oil change with a newfilter. Drive the car for at least 30 min-utes on a dry day to drive off any mois-ture that has collected in the crankcasebefore putting it up for the season. Werecommend oils that are formulated forclassic cars that are idle for long periods. These special oils will coat and protectthe internal surfaces of the engine betterthan modern oils. For an article on oil andclassic cars, see this tech article. Lubri-cate the suspension in accordance withthe factory workshop manual.

Upholstery & Interior Trim

Clean the interior thoroughly. If any ofthe carpets or padding are damp, takethem out and dry them. Treat all leatherwith Connolly Hide food or AutoGlymLeather Care Cream. Vinyl trim can betreated with AutoGlym Vinyl & RubberCream. Put the top up and give it a goodcleaning, and treat it with a suitableprotectant. The line of Renovo cleaningand preservative products for both vinyland fabric tops are excellent. Leave thetop up and either roll up the windows orfit the side curtains. Leaving the top upwill help prevent the development of per-manent creases in the material and plas-tic windows.

in Connecticut in September where wesaw not one, but three, TR250s. It wasvery exciting!

I still can’t drive her but have enjoyedhaving my own mechanic and driver. What could be better? We are hoping tobring her to the Field of Dreams and theBritish Invasion this year so be sure tolook for us. A recent development is thatthe TR6/250 Car Club of America chosea picture of our 250, “Arabella”, to be“Miss January” in their 2012 club calen-dar. So the car we once considered sell-ing has now become a calendar girl!Keith had such fun working on Arabellathat he recently purchased another TR250for himself. Just when I thought we wouldbe doing other things, he seems to be liv-ing in the garage again.
