Car of the Month

by Jim Freeman

Hello all! I’d like to tell you about myBritish car, a 1953 MG TF. I first fell inlove with the “T” series cars a long timeago when I was very young. The first oneI remember was back in the mid 1950sand was a yellow TD. It might have beena TC but it was just about the coolest thingI had ever seen. It lived down the streetfrom where I grew up in Washington DC.After my very first car, an English FordAngela, I moved on to an MG1100 and an Austin America. Then came a long spell of Ameri-can cars and trucks, and a coupleof MGBs. Through all of thesecars, I had always kept the “T”in the back of my mind. As itturned out I didn’t know howclose I had been to the “T”s backwhen I was growing up. My life-long best friend’s brother wasracing TDs and maybe TCs at thelocal race track and doing quitewell at it. I was not to find thisout, however, until many yearshad passed. It was too bad that Iwas never able to talk to himabout his experiences as he had passed.

My TF came into my life about ten ortwelve years ago when my friend Buzzywas given the car by a good friend of hiswho had just passed away. The car hadbeen stored for many years in a barn onthe edge of Lake Sunapee NH and was,for the most part, in OK shape, at leastbody and frame wise. The first time I sawthe car was when my friend borrowedmy trailer to get it out of the barn whereit had been stored. The engine was notworking and there was some question asto whether it would. The interior was intough shape but the body was sound andthe wood and frame were in very goodshape. This car had a lot of sentimentalvalue to my friend, as was understand-able. He was going to get it back into goodshape in memory of his friend. After tak-ing ownership of the car he had the en-gine rebuilt by a very reputable shop.

Over the next few years he was able toget other parts restored but was neverable to complete the project. Then, acouple of years ago, he suffered a stroke. While he has recovered quite a bit, he toldme that he was just not able to completethe project. I offered to buy the car fromhim and we agreed on a price. I then toldhim that I wanted him to think about thisfor a week. I knew what the car hadmeant to him when he had gotten it yearsbefore and I wanted to make sure he re-ally wanted to sell it. I told him what myplans were for the car and assured himthat I was not going to resell it. Once Icompleted the restoration, he would be

the very first person to get a ride in it. Weshook hands and the deal was done. I nowhad my MG FT. Of course it still did notrun. We had to push it on to the sametrailer that he had used to get it out of thebarn a number of years ago. Althoughthe engine was now in good condition, itstill lacked a few things to make it roadworthy. A couple of years before this Ihad given up on a restoration project of a1971 MGB. I had given that one to myfriend Allan. I was getting out of MGs,unless I could find a “T” somewhere. Atthat point, I had no idea that one was com-ing into my life. So I called Allen again, but this time I told him I had found anMG FT. He said to bring it over to hisgarage. He is as much into MGs as any-one and was about half way through amajor restoration of his 1974 MGB. Wemoved his wife’s car out of her side ofthe garage (it is a good thing that she likesme) and put the TF in her spot as the other

side had the 74 up on stands. I promisedher it would it would only be there a monthand I kept my word. She helped quite abit with both the TF and her husband’s Bproject.

I got the TF over to my friends house andup on the stands to check it out and tosee just what we were up against. Wequickly realized that this was not going tobe that big of a project to get it up andrunning. However, to get it into the con-dition that I had in my mind it was goingto take some time and effort. We got herrunning and out of my friend’s garage inabout a month. His wife had her spot back

and I had my TF in my garage andI could now play with it at my lei-sure.

One of the first things that I wasgoing to do was change the way thefog lights were set up. Someonehad thought that the lights shouldhang down under the front bumper. If I was going to drive this car, un-der the bumper was not a goodplace for them to be. There wassomething just not right with the waythe front of the car looked. Some-times the most obvious things arethe hardest to see. Then one day Iwas looking through one of the

books that I had picked up on “T”s. Fromthe pictures I could see that there wereseveral thing wrong. First of all, someonehad thought that the bumper’s verticalparts were in the wrong places and thereshould be a badge bar that the fog lightswould mount on. When I moved theseparts into their correct location, front-endlooked the way it should.

Next came the tires and wheels. The wirewheels were in good shape but the biasply tires were very old and weathered. On the drive home from my friend’shouse I had noticed a noise coming fromthe tires. Surprisingly, they still held air,but they were very questionable for anydriving. I tried to set the alignment butcould not get it right so I thought it mightbe a good time to have someone whoknew more of what was involved take a

WOW!What a great way to celebrate the Holi-day Season.

Sixty-six Members (the highest numberwe have ever had for a single event otherthan the Show of Dreams) gathered atBayberry Vintage Auto in Hampton toview the collection there. Classic Englishunderstatement would say, “It was quiteimpressive.” It would be a challenge toanyone to say which one car was theirfavorite. There were just too many spec-tacular examples to be able to pick oneof them as being a standout from the rest.

In addition, it became very clear that JoeLeweck, the Curator of the Collection, can be a very valuable resource for theClub. Joe ran a twenty-man restorationshop in California before “retiring” to thequiet of New Hampshire. He has awealth of knowledge about a very broadrange of different cars and has preparedeverything from the MGB “driver” for hiswife to several Pebble Beach entries. Joehas agreed to be one of the Judges forthe Master Class at the Show of Dreamsthis coming summer.

When it came time to move from Bay-berry to the Bonta Restaurant, a quarter-of-a-mile down the road, it was obviousthat many members were not really readyto leave, and several didn’t. But whenwe got to the Bonta it was pretty clearthat the party was far from over. Notonly was the dining area festively arrayed, but the layout of the lounge area, with atwo-sided fireplace separating it from thedining room, was set up in a way that wasvery conducive to the kind of mingling andinteracting that we were all there for.

The energy level in the room, both duringthe cocktail hour and during dinner, wasvery gratifying. Everyone was clearlyhaving a wonderful time. It was evengratifying that I had to shout in order toget any “airtime” at all to cover the orga-nizational formalities of the evening.

On the subject of formalities and order, Ithink it can be fairly said that there wasnot much of either during the YankeeSwap. With twice as many gifts to ex-change than in previous years, we rap-idly descended into chaos. I’m pretty surethat everyone ended up with something

and I know that there was a good deal ofswapping going on, but if there were any“rules” they were largely ignored. Ohwell.

To top it all off, my Subaru looked likeSanta’s sleigh when I drove off with allthe toys that Members had donated to“Toys for Tots”. The coordinator at thedrop-off center at the Exeter Fire Stationwas visibly overwhelmed by the quantityand quality of the toys when I deliveredthem the next day.

It was indeed a joyous celebration. Myhope is that some of those members whoattended, but who don’t regularly attendthe monthly meetings, now have a betteridea of just how much fun we have whenwe get together. As I have said before inother articles, it took me a while to figureout that this is really a social club and thatthe cars are just a vehicle (pun fully in-tended) to bring us together. Just imag-ine how great it would be if we had sixty-six people at the regular monthly meet-ing! WOW!!

See you on January 10

look at. I looked around and found a shopin Plainfield, New Hampshire called“Sport & Vintage Car” run by CraigWehde. When I went into his shop I sawthat it was very extensive, clean, orderlyand full of cars. I saw at least one TD, acouple of MGAs, numerous British andGerman cars, and other cars that I knewnothing about. We talked about my carand I decided to give him a try. The carwent back on the trailer and out to hisshop. After a few days he gave me a calland said that he had taken a look at thecar and had some information for me.When I stopped by, there were severalthings that he had found that needed tobe addressed. He was very impressedwith the overall condition of the car. Hesaid it had a very sound platform and thatall of the work that he had seen lookedlike it had been done in the proper man-ner. His view was that these cars weremeant to be driven. Unless I was onlyinterested in turning this car into a showcar, he had a few suggestions. First, herecommended that the tires be switchedfrom the bias-ply to a newer radial style. He had found that the reason I could notget it into alignment was a bent piece thathe was sure he could fix. He also recom-mended I put the newer electronic igni-tion parts in the distributor. The starterneeded to be reconditioned. The carneeded a tune-up and then I was to drive

it for a couple of hundred miles beforeseeing what else might be needed. Wewere only addressing the mechanicalneeds of the car. The condition of thepaint, interior and top was to come after Ihad a running, reliable (I know we aretalking about an old British car with Lucas,Prince of Darkness, electronics) car. Bythe time the work was completed the win-ter snows were here and I got the cartucked back into the garage. I workedon some things I could do myself overthe winter. I replaced the floor on thedriver side as there was a hole in thewood. I found that there is this wonderfulplace located not too far from where Ilive called “Abingdon Spares”. I am surethat anyone that has had anything to dowith the “T” knows about these folks. They are the best and we have become

very good friends over the last year orso. They have answered more than just acouple of my questions.

I reregistered with the New England TRegistry and found that the previousowner had also registered it a number ofyears ago, so it has had a fairly low num-ber of owners, for what that is worth. Iwill most likely sign up with the folks inthe NH “T” Party before very long. I havemet a couple of them at some of the eventsthat I have gone to over the summer.

When this past spring came and I wasable to get the car out and start to drive itsome, I became aware of something’s Ihad not experienced before. These carsare as much fun to drive as I thought theymight be. However, they are made for asmaller person than I am. I am not sure Icould fit into this car if I was ever to tryand drive it with the top up. Most of thetime I am looking over the top rim of thewindshield. The peddles can just about allbe pushed down with one good size footso care is needed here to do clutch, brakeand gas correctly. Having no syncro intofirst gear was also a bit of adjustment.Any place you go you are an instant carshow and it is sometimes funny to hearwhat people think the car is. I have takenthe car to a couple of car shows this pastsummer. I went to one here at MountSunapee Resort and I went to the oneBCNH put on over in Wolfeboro NH. Thatwas when I re-joined this club. I had beena member many years ago when I had

my MGBs. The show in Wolfeboro wasvery nice and I was warmly welcomedand had a great time. I will be back. Atthese shows I was able to see how muchmore I will need to do to get my little carto the point I want it to be. It still is theugly duckling when compared to the other“T”s that show up.

Oh, and this spring, when I took it out forthe first time, I stopped over and took myfriend Buzz for the ride I had promisedhim. We had a good ride and he waspleased at what was happening to the car.The car is now back in for some morework and will be back out on the roadthis next summer.

Holiday Eating Tips1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet tableknows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leaveimmediately. Go next door, where they’re serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can. And quickly. It’s rare. You can’t findit any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000calories in every sip?

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That’s the whole point of gravy.Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashedpotatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they’re made with skim milk orwhole milk. If it’s skim, pass. Why bother? It’s like buying an MG with anautomatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control youreating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people’sfood for free. Lots of it. Hello?

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and NewYear’s. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. Thisis the time for long naps, which you’ll need after circling the buffet tablewhile carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frostedChristmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself nearthem and don’t budge. Have as many as you can before becoming thecenter of attention. They’re like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave thembehind, you’re never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple. Pumpkin. Mincemeat. Have a slice of each. Or ifyou don’t like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always havethree. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it’s loaded with the mandatorycelebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost.. I mean, have some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don’t feel terrible when you leave the party or getup from the table, you haven’t been paying attention. Reread tips; startover, but hurry, January is just around the corner.

Remember this motto to live by: “Life should NOT be a journey to the gravewith the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, glass of eggnog in theother, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming ÒWOOHOO what a ride!”

Have a great holiday season!

Twas the night before ChristmasTwas the night before ChristmasTwas the night before ChristmasTwas the night before ChristmasTwas the night before Christmas‘Twas the night before Christmas, and out on the street Sat my poor little TC,

all covered with sleet.

The starter was frozen; the battery dead. And clusters of icicles hung from the head.

Mama with the cables, and I with the crank Were trying to start it, but drawing a blank.

The best we could raise was a weak little clatter,

And we couldn’t determine just what was the matter.

When what did our wandering eyeballs perceive, But a fat little man you just wouldn’t believe.

His cap was made of a bundle of wire; The tails of his coat were crackling with fire.

His eyes were like light bulbs (and one didn’t work); A glowing face with an electrical smirk!

He was so badly wired that I knew in a wink that this poor apparition was from Lucas, Inc.

He opened the bonnet and started to poke, Thus causing a short and a cloud of blue smoke.

He crackled and sizzled, and giving a zap, He fractured the gol’ darn distributor cap.

He walked to the back, and giving a thump, He boogered the points on my old fuel pump.

And laying a finger alongside of his nose, He sizzled away, while the two of us froze.

He sprang to his car in a move oh-so-smart, We almost expected the darn thing to start.

The starter turned over; the engine roared out, And over the clatter we heard Lucas shout:

“Out, Healey, out Jaguar, out MG and Sprite, Out Lucas Ignition, this cold winter’s night!”

And we heard him exclaim, as skyward he roared: “So long, crazy Yanks! I’m powered by Ford!”
