= Deo Persaud was born in Guyana and grew up in Georgetown. He moved to the UK and worked in the NHS (1966- 1975), and went on to become a technical specialist in adult and paediatric cardiology. He developed a keen interest in documentary photography viewing it as witness to cultural and social practice, as well as a tool for socio-political change. It was through photography that he sought to expose the brutal working conditions of cane cutters in Guyana’s sugar industry and expose the failure of successive governments to address the need for change. Deo’s photographs and writings on the sugar industry will be presented by Dr Michelle Yaa Asantewa. Michael C. Lam is a Guyanese-born and based photographer. His influences include the work of Ansel Adams, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Darren Moore. He sees photography as a means of artistic expression, a recording, but also an interpretation of what is, not what isn’t, included in the frame. His locally and internationally exhibited works include: Coastal Wanderings (2012), Guyana Visual Arts Competition & Exhibition (2012, 2014 & 2017), VISIONS 2016 (Guyana), Un| Fixed Homeland - 2016 (NJ, USA), and Liminal Space - 2017 (NY, USA). Guyana SPEAKS will present a video that has been specially produced by Michael for this programme. Jamain Gordon is a Guyanese-born, London-based Fashion and Portraiture photographer. He received his first camera (a Canon 1000f) at the age of ten and quickly developed an interest in photography as art and socio-cultural documentary. Jamain, runner-up in the undergraduate single image category for 2017 Breakthrough Awards with BJP, was inspired to return to Guyana while studying at Farnham University for the Creative Arts. This trip resulted in the production of the book, One People, One Nation, One Destiny: a photographic memoire of the people he met and to whom he felt closely connected. Jamain’s will share his thoughts on this trip and the motivations behind his work. The programme will include a short video showcasing less well-known regions of Guyana, and poetry readings by Ingrid Dover-Vidal from her debut collection of poetry, Make it Shine.
