What is motivation? • something that arouses action or

activity • incentive• drive• Example: Wanting a good grade is

motivation for hard work.

Page 3: Jenn 6 C 2

Why do students need motivation?

• To help them develop skills

• To take ownership in their learning.

• To be empowered• To be engaged.

Page 4: Jenn 6 C 2

The 6 C’s • Choice• Challenge • Control• Collaboration• Construct

Meaning• Consequences

Page 5: Jenn 6 C 2

Choice• Choice is allowing the students to

pick what they learn (when appropriate), or how they do a task.

• Choice is important to students so that they know they have ownership of learning

• Students can choose activities at their level that appeal to them.

CFU-Check for Understanding

• What are some words that are similar to motivation? – incentive, drive

• Why is choice important in motivation? – Choice gives students power in learning.

Page 7: Jenn 6 C 2

Control• Students need to have control:

– Decision making– Organizing content– Choosing partners (when appropriate)

• Students need to feel a sense of control in their learning, this gives them a sense of ownership.

• Keep choices limited to avoid studentanxiety. They are provided with sense of independence, and responsibility.

Challenge• Challenge is considered

the difficulty level of an assignment.

• Students should be challenged without being overwhelmed.

• Example: If a student is reading independently at a level 7, have him/her read a level 8 book.

Page 9: Jenn 6 C 2

CFU• Why is control important for students when

motivating them?

• How does challenge motivate students?

Page 10: Jenn 6 C 2

Collaboration• Students need to be taught to

work together effectively. • Working together helps students

learn from themselves and each other.

• “Two heads are better than one”

Page 11: Jenn 6 C 2

Constructing Meaning• Students need to make

meaning of what they learn based on how they learn.

• Metacognitive Moments: Students think about how they learned.

• Setting goals leads to meaningful learning

• Authentic assessment and activities helps with constructing meaning.

Page 12: Jenn 6 C 2

Consequences (Good ones)

• Feeling of accomplishment• Providing for all to succeed at

some task. • Being appreciated helps with

motivation• The best motivator is praise from

the teacher!

Page 13: Jenn 6 C 2

Connecting to Technology (7th C

perhaps)• Technology is a great

motivator! • Helps visual learners

with concept attainment• Technology is

interactive, so students are active learners rather than passive.

• Technology provides for more challenge!

• Technology is an attention grabber.

Page 14: Jenn 6 C 2

Why is technology so important?

• Technology improves motivation, attitude, and interest when students use computer applications that adjust problems and tasks to maximize students' experience of success.

Page 15: Jenn 6 C 2

More reasons why technology is so

important• Technology

improves motivation, attitude, and interest when students use challenging, game-like programs and technology applications designed to develop basic skills and knowledge.

• Technology improves motivation, attitude, and interest when students use technology applications to produce, demonstrate, and share their work with peers, teachers, and parents.
