Mr Grace is looking at new aspects in education and further studies, while Mr Swanepoel and Ms Sutherland are both going to take up teaching positions overseas. We wish them the best of luck and happiness in these endeavours and I would like to personally thank Miss Sutherland, Mr Grace and Mr Swanepoel for their dedicated and selfless service to Jeppe High School for Boys. Whilst we are sad to be losing the above three educators, I am delighted to announce the appointment of a number of exceptional educators who will be starting in the 3rd term and will add significantly to the quality of our staff. Mr Gareth Kolkenbeck-Ruh will join us as a Deputy Headmaster from St Davids Prep where he was also a deputy headmaster. Mr Kolkenbeck-Ruh has previously taught at KES (where he was HOD English) and St Davids and is a significant acquisition who will take responsibility for the discipline portfolio and will also teach in the English department. As a former MIC soccer and 1st team cricket coach at KES, he will also add great value in the extra-mural department. Good luck to all the Jeppe boys taking part in the provincial hockey and rugby tournaments. Your achievements are well deserved and I hope you will enjoy the experience of playing with other learners from around the country. I wish everyone in the Jeppe Family a happy, restful and safe holiday. May the time you spend with your family and friends be blessed. 30 June 2017 Newsletter 8/2017 FROM THE HEADMASTERS DESK Sadly, as we end the second term of 2017, we say farewell to three educators who are leaving to develop and grow in differing aspects of their personal lives. Mr Gareth Kolkenbeck-Ruh will join us as a Deputy Headmaster from St Davids Prep where he was also a deputy headmaster. STAFF FAREWELL BREAKFAST David Grace, Eduard Swanepoel and Gabriella Sutherland were bid farewell by their colleagues at a breakfast function on Thursday 15 th June 2017. Damien Pitman who has been friends with David Grace from their first day of Grade 8 in Mrs Acton’s homeroom class, spoke warmly of David’s commitment and love for Jeppe and the boys. David will be attending extended education courses with particular interest in teaching Second Language English overseas.

Shaun McGeer gave a very moving speech in honour of Eduard Swanepoel whom he has known for some 20 years, having first coached him as a young cricketer from the Vaal Triangle many years ago. As fate would have it, they have then been colleagues at Jeppe for the past few years. Eduard is going to be teaching Physical Education at an International School in Dubai.

Danielle Blake spoke of Gabriella Sutherland’s passion for being involved in many aspects of the learner’s lives and development - be it in the classroom, doing dramatic productions or assisting with First Aid. The Drama Society holds a very special place in her heart. Gabriella is leaving SA to teach English in Vietnam.

OLD BOY – JAKE WHITE PAYS A VISIT TO JEPPE BOYS Jeppe Old Boy and World Cup winning coach of the Springboks, Jake White, paid the school a visit on Monday 19 June 2017. He ran a coaching session for the 1st and under-16A teams, and then conducted a coaching masterclass for the Jeppe coaches in the Watson pavilion. For the boys, it was a taste of what practice is like for the professional players. They were taken through a dynamic, punishing drill in which they were shown how to defend in different places on the field, and how to vary their point and method of attack. There’s no doubt that, after just one and half hours in Jake White’s presence, they came away as better rugby players. The practice was followed by a question and answer session with the Jeppe coaches in which they were given an insight into how teams are prepared at the top levels of the game and on the latest tactical developments. Throughout the afternoon, White’s finest quality – his ability to deal with people – shone through. He had the players hanging on his every word, and was accessible and generous in his interaction with the coaches. Above all, he showed an appreciation of the role Jeppe has played in his life and was clearly delighted to be giving something back to the school.

RUGBY – PROVINCIAL SELECTION GOLDEN LIONS HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY Although it hasn’t been the perfect season for Jeppe’s 1st rugby team, the school will still be sending 11 players to the various under-18 interprovincial weeks during the holidays, and a further 14 to the under-16 weeks. This shows, according to 1st team coach, Carl Spilhaus, that the quality of players at the school is high, and that Jeppe boys are held in high regard by the selectors from the other schools. “There are many reasons why the team hasn’t been firing this year,” he said, “but the one thing you can’t fault is the physicality and commitment of the individual players. That’s what the selectors have recognised and it’s a big compliment to the school that we have one of the biggest representations from a single school in the Golden Lions teams.” Mr Spilhaus, who will coach the Golden Lions team at the Coca-Cola Craven Week, is confident that, in a different environment, the boys will come into their own, and that’s a good thing for the future. Kegan Litchfield and Muzi Manyike, the two Jeppe boys going to the Craven Week, are both in grade 11, so they will be eligible for the Jeppe team against next year. “It’s that kind of experience that forms the basis for a good season, and it’s something we were lacking this year,” Spilhaus said. There are a further three Jeppe players in the Academy Week team (the Golden Lions B side) and two more in the Academy XV – a C side chosen this year because the Lions union is hosting the Craven and Academy Weeks. There are two Jeppe representatives in the under-18 Welpies team – an under-19 team that will play in a regional tournament in Potchefstroom. Jeppe’s under-16 team has been one of the best around this season and that is reflected in the selection of no fewer than 14 players for provincial teams. There are 9 players in the A side that will be playing at the Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Week; 4 in the team for the under-16 Academy Week; and two in the under-16 Welpies team. Jeppe educators are also well represented in the coaching and management of the Provincial teams. Carl Spilhaus is the under-18A coach, his assistant is Reg Hammond and Brendan Gittins is the team’s video analyst. Janse van der Ryst is the head coach of the under-16A team. The under-18 Craven and Academy Weeks run concurrently at St Stithians College from 17th to 22nd July 2017. The under-16 Grant Khomo Week is at Grey College in Bloemfontein from 10th to 14th July 2017. U18 Craven Week Academy Week Kegan Litchfield Mpho Tjamela Muzilikazi Manyike Boitumelo Tsatsane

The Jeppe Players and the teams they will be representing are: - U14 Team Gauteng Caden Sanders, Hayden Bartlett, Jaydon Lincoln and Ross Breytenbach were chosen for this prestigious team comprising players chosen from Southern, Eastern and Northern Gauteng.

ACHIEVEMENTS Athletics Very well done to Ntuthuko Ndimande on being selected to represent South Africa in the 800m at the IAAF U18 World Championships in Nairobi from 12th to 16th July 2017. This is an outstanding achievement as Ntuthuko should still be competing in the U17 age group.

Baseball Congratulations to Zunaid Alper on his selection for the 2017 SA U18 Baseball team. The team will be participating in the WBSC U18 Baseball World Cup in Thunderbay, Canada from 01 to 10 September 2017. Well done Zunaid and good luck for the tournament.

STAFF AND COACHING DEVELOPMENT COURSE Jeppe coaches, facilitators and mentors spent a fascinating afternoon with Paddy Upton, former assistant coach to Gary Kirsten with the South Africa and Indian cricket teams, and currently head coach to three professional T20 teams – the Sydney Thunder in the Australian Big Bash League, Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League and the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL. Upton’s talk was about best practice in managing sports performance and it was all about the change from the old command and control style of leading people to a new, participative style of coaching that allows the players a say in all aspects of their preparation. Upton showed how game review, planning for the next match and the implementation of practice sessions to put that plan into action, can all be co-created and executed by the coaching staff and the players together. The approach is future-orientated, looking for solutions rather than apportioning blame and identifying opportunities rather than pointing out errors. Throughout, Upton stressed that process is more important than outcome and that the aim is to help players to become better people, through the medium of sport. The coaches indicated that this approach can certainly make a difference to their effectiveness as coaches, and educators. All who attended were of the opinion that this was a most worthwhile initiate from the school and where grateful for the opportunity to be “coached” by someone of Paddy Upton’s expertise and knowledge. NOTEWORTHY MENTIONS Basketball Tristan Speck, Grade 12 and 1st team basketball player has been invited to attend a basketball camp at Duke University in North Carolina. He is also being hosted by Jeppe Old Boy, David Blackman in Raleigh, North Carolina before and after the camp. This is certain to be a wonderful experience for Tristan. Football Matthias Walcher (Grade 8) will be travelling to Spain with Rand Central Local Football Association during the July holidays. The district team will be taking part on the Donosti Tournament and we wish Matthias the best of luck for his games. First Aid Reece Bloemstein (Grade 12) and Phakamani Msimang (Grade 9) were the two volunteer First Aiders who assisted with the incident (right) at Sylvia’s Market on Sunday, 25th June 2017. Well done gentlemen on your generous and kind community spirit.
