£800m investment in ‘green’ technology

Presenter
Presentation Notes
A key component of our EI plan is our £800m investment in green technology Much as we would like to make an immediate step change in our product’s performance, this isn’t possible in one go; we need to be consistent and progressive in delivering new technologies over time. We are starting with making a series of changes, which in themselves are minor, but collectively build to a useful improvement in efficiency. The engineers call these parasitics, but for the less technically inclined these include low rolling resistance tyres, active air intake vanes for the grilles and disconnecting air con compressors when they’re not being used New technologies will accelerate progress: Freelander stop-start and new more efficient power train such as the amazing 3.0 Diesel which we’ve successfully launched in both Jaguar and Land Rover products recently New product programmes give us the best opportunity to make big improvements and believe me, we are going to make a step change. We already have a great track record in producing lightweight cars, the all aluminium, XJ and XK are both great examples of this – and this trend will continue – the next range Rover for example, will be substantially lighter than the vehicle it replaces. But it’s not just aluminium, we will also be moving to more advanced high strength steels, reinforced plastics and advanced component technologies We will then be looking at new and innovative power train solutions – hybrids, advanced diesel engine technologies, 8 speed transmissions and much more powerful, but smaller engines generally. This is a hugely exciting plan – we are in the business of building the world’s finest luxury cars and SUV’s – our customers will continue to demand improving levels of performance and capability – and we will continue to deliver that, but with new technology and the ingenuity of our people, our products are also going to be much more efficient as well. This is a great challenge or us – and a great opportunity for us to demonstrate our unique technical prowess and to carve a special place for ourselves in a crowded market place.
