A Peep into the Past of the Jerilderie Public School

In a remarkable coincidence, the school recently received an enquiry relating to the “Jerilderie Red” that is growing in the front yard of the School residence.

Apparently, the tree is to feature in the summer edition of The Garden Clinic magazine, an offshoot of the ABC’s Better Homes and Gardens television program.

The following is an extract from the History of the Jerilderie Public School, which the P&C is to put on sale at the 150th celebrations, on Sunday, 22 September, 2019.

In 1980 former South Coree resident and amateur horticulturist, Walter Pyle, began the process to have official recognition bestowed on a tree that was growing in the front garden of the Jerilderie Public School residence, and which was, in his opinion, unique to Jerilderie.

An article printed in the Jerilderie Herald and Urana Advertiser on 22 April 1948, does however, gives an indication of a time frame within which the tree may have been propagated.

The newspaper item was part of a brief history of the Jerilderie Public School, prepared for the school’s local celebrations commemorating the centenary of Public Education in NSW, which was held during the week commencing 12 April, 1948.

It is interesting to note that during the headmastership of Mr William Elliott, the beautiful Kurrajong tree in the front garden of the residence and which is of the rare red flowered variety, was planted by one of the girl pupils, Maggie MacDonald.

On reading that article one could estimate that the tree may have had its genesis between March 1876, when the new school on this particular site was occupied, and June 1885 when William Elliott resigned from the Education Department.

Mr Pyle had first become aware of the tree in 1958 which had somehow been created by the crossing of an Illawarra Flame Tree (Brachychiton acerifolius) and a Kurrajong (B. populneus).

In February 1983 the Australian Cultivar Authority notified Mr Pyle that the Red Kurrajong tree would henceforth be known as Brachychiton “Jerilderie Red”.

In a letter to Your Garden, published in September 1983, Mr Pyle wrote:

No one knows exactly when the “red Kurrajong” began its life as a natural cross, but Mr Val Chapman, one of the town’s oldest citizens, said it was about three metres high in 1905.

No doubt the tree, bearing masses of red flowers during late Spring and Summer, served as an inspiration to Mrs Jann Robertson of “Woodside” Jerilderie, when she responded in July 1964 to a call seeking suggestions for a school song. Mrs Robertson was also President of the P&C Ladies’ Auxiliary.

Mrs Robertson’s submission, sung to the tune of Waltzing Matilda, remains to this day, the school song.

The school that grows the bright red kurrajong, Forever in our hearts will be, And we’ll lift up our voices gladly in praise and song For our school at Jerilderie Onward Jerilderie, Onward Jerilderie; We’ll wave our banner high on thee. And we’ll lift up our voices gladly in praise and song For our school at Jerilderie. Colombo, Algudgerie, Yanko and Billabong Our Houses are proud of thee. And we’ll all do our best to keep our Houses strong And our school at Jerilderie Onward Jerilderie, Onward Jerilderie; We’ll wave our banner high on thee. And we’ll all do our best to keep our Houses strong And our school at Jerilderie “Excel with Honour” is our motto And true to our word we will be, As down life’s pathway onward we go along From our school at Jerilderie. Onward Jerilderie, Onward Jerilderie; We’ll wave our banner high on thee. As down life’s pathway onward we go along From our school at Jerilderie.

Mr Pyle was to later advise the Jerilderie Shire’s gardener at the time, Keith Brew, on how and when to graft the “Jerilderie Red”, as it

is as much part of the town as the Billabong Creek and the memory of Ned Kelly’s visit. In 2000 another “Jerilderie Red” was planted in front of the Jerilderie Public School Principal’s office, in memory of former student Michelle Rowe, who finally lost her battle with leukemia, on 15 July 2000.
