Did you know? One lung is bigger than the other – the

right one. An adult has 32 teeth and kids have 20. We have about 206 bones and about 600

muscles. The biggest muscle is the heart. The biggest bone is the femur.

A peep into the past of Jerilderie Public School Jerilderie Public School competed in the Small Schools Athletic Carnival at Savernake last Friday, and no doubt today’s issue will publish the results of those students competing. The school has a long history of competing in inter-school athletics carnivals, and the following is an extract from the History of the Jerilderie Public School which will be on sale by the P & C at the school’s 150th celebrations, to be held on Sunday 22 September, 2019.

When Jerilderie Public School joined the small schools inter-school sports program in 2018, it brought to a close, beginning with athletics, the participation by Jerilderie in the large school section of the inter-schools’ sports programs.

It was on Friday, 6 November 1936, that the inaugural inter-school athletic carnival of the Southern Riverina Branch of the Public Schools Amateur Athletic Association was held at Finley.

Schools comprising the Association were Jerilderie, Tocumwal, Berrigan, The Retreat, Coree South, Booroobanilly, Osborne Well, Blighty, Green Swamp Road, Langunyah, Warrenella, and Finley. The sports carnival was divided into two competitions – small schools and large schools, the large schools comprising Jerilderie, Tocumwal, Berrigan and Finley.

Typically, as roads and transport improved, school bus services commenced, and declining rural populations as mechanisation was introduced into farming practices, the small schools began to disappear, with from those named Blighty being the only small school remaining.

From left to right: Kendall Purcell, Sam Sleigh, Blair Henery, Jessica Sleigh and Edith Gregory, waiting to compete in their inter-school cross country event held at Harden in 2005. Of interest is that three of the contestants in the photo went on to represent the school, Riverina, and then New South Wales in sporting events in later years.
