Who is considered a continuing student?

A continuing student is student who has maintained continuous enrollment in Texas Southern University.

What is the completion rate?

Completion rate = Overall number of credit hours attempted at all universities attended / Overall number of credit hours

completed or earned at all universities attended. The minimum completion rate required is 70%.

Are JHJ scholarships performance-based?

JHJ scholarship awards are based on academic performance, as defined by the scholarship award criteria.

Are all JHJ scholarship recipients required to complete a FAFSA or TASFA?

Yes; all JHJ scholarship recipients are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Texas

Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) (international students). Texas Southern University’s institutional code is 003642.

How do I access the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)?

Apply for the FAFSA Online – Filing electronically increases the accuracy of your application, saves mailing time, and

reduces the processing time to about two weeks. The electronic version may be submitted online at the U.S. Department of

Education website, www.fafsa.ed.gov.

How do I access the Texas Application for State Financial Aid (TASFA) for international students?

Apply for the TASFA by downloading the form at www.collegeforalltexans.com. The completed and signed TASFA form

must be submitted to the TSU Office of Financial Aid for processing. For more information about the TASFA, visit em.tsu.edu/

financial aid/forms.php.

Does receiving student loans disqualify me from receiving a scholarship award?

No, students with loans are eligible to receive a scholarship award and may be used to reduce loan amount.

May I use my scholarship funds for the summer sessions?

No; scholarship funds can only be used during the fall and spring semesters.

If I have a previous semester outstanding balance, may I use my scholarship award to cover that balance?

No; scholarship funds cannot be used to cover a previous semester outstanding balance, nor can they be applied retroac-

tively. Scholarship funds must be used and applied to a student’s account in the semester in which they are awarded.

When are tuition waivers available and are they guaranteed?

A limited number of tuition waivers are available at the beginning of the fall semester. If awarded, tuition waivers are

awarded for the entire academic year, but are NOT guaranteed and are NOT requested until ALL scholarship requirements

have been met.

What is the benefit of a tuition waiver?

The tuition waiver enables non-resident scholarship recipient’s tuition to be converted to in-state tuition.

If I am awarded the business scholarship, do I have to re-apply every year?

No, scholarship recipients only apply once and are automatically considered for the next years’ award.

Can I be purged from classes (Banner system) if my scholarship funds are not posted when classes start?

Yes; all recipients are responsible for completing a financial aid deferment or paying 50% of their tuition and fees prior to the

purge date.

How will I receive communication about my JHJ scholarship award?

Scholarship information will be communicated via recipient’s TSU email and alternate email address(es) provided to Texas

Southern University.

How do I access my TSU student email account?

To access your TSU student email account, visit www.tsu.edu, click My TSU Web and login to the current TSU student My TSU

Web portal. Once you have logged on to your student account, click the email icon in the upper right hand corner of the

screen. There you will be able to send and receive emails from your TSU student email account.

How will I receive my scholarship funds?

Scholarship funds will be posted directly to recipient’s TSU student account.

NOTE: No student can exceed their financial aid budget for the year, so any award in excess of the budget will result in the

adjustment of other aid, if possible. If no adjustment is possible, the student will not qualify to receive the JHJ School scholar-

ship award. The TSU Office of Financial Aid is the final decision authority for all awards. Rev061818
