A Lenten Conversation, mid-week…

Each Wednesday of the Lenten season, Pastor Ed and I will at-

tempt to deal with questions, really pertinent ones, that many

who were especially close to our Lord asked Him.

This will happen both at the brief noon communion service and

the 6:30 p.m. Evening Prayer service. All are welcome!

We’ll hear thoughts from such people as the Samaritan woman at

the well; Nicodemus, a Pharisee; a blind man healed by Jesus;

Mary and Martha; and last but not least – Jesus’ own disciples.

Right now, as you might wonder what questions these people

might ask Jesus, I want you to think about this:

If you could have an audience with Jesus Christ, what would you ask Him? Just one question. Think hard because you only get one shot at it.

And…

Would you be willing to share your question with me?

Would you like to – sometime later this year – sit down and see if

we can discover the answers?

In the meantime, take some time this season – especially on

Wednesdays – come, and see what God has to say to some peo-

ple who ask some very interesting questions! (Maybe their ques-

tions are some of yours!)

Thanks to Ann Gerrietts from the Mission Investment Fund who was with us on Feb. 1; to Pastor Gary

Lylery, who helped with the Memorial service; thanks to everyone else who helped with the Jennifer Staf-

ford Memorial Service and the Reception that followed; to Brenda Whitson for getting Ms. Becky Haas to

inform & educate the Council about Johnson City’s homeless.

Approved Monthly reports and minutes.

Conversation was shared about OSLCs plans to work with the homeless of the city. Money from Sunday

School offerings are going to help prepare “snack bags” for school children who depend on schools for

their meals during the week. These healthy bags are to help them make it through the weekend. We

talked about our involvement in May with “Loaves and Fishes” which feeds the homeless in downtown on

a Saturday of that month. Details are forthcoming.

Council has been asked to approve moving forward on the Security Team for OSLC. Dale Cannon, Ken

Loveday, Brian Patteson, Bill Brooks, and Jim Malenda are willing to serve. They were approved to begin

work on the details of the plan which includes instruction and education of the congregation of how to re-

spond in time of emergency while in the building. There was a request for one or two more members.

We will set up a committee to oversee the maintenance of the Columbarium that will be installed in the

courtyard of the church in the near future. This committee will organize the plans on how to purchase a

niche in the columbarium, set the costs for those purchases, as well as maintain the columbarium. Pastor

Jim will look into adding members to this committee.

After our meeting with the Mission Investment Fund Building Consultant, there have been conversations

with leaders in both worships (Traditional and Heartsong) about what we can do to make the worship

space usable for both worship experiences. As plans are considered, the congregation will be involved

in the education of what might need to be done to accomplish this.

Offerings given for Lent will be given to “The River” ministry here in Johnson City. This organization

helps local women who are homeless.

Closed with the Lord’s Prayer March Confirmation Class The Confirmation Class will meet Sunday, March 18, from 6-8 p.m. Hope to see everyone there!

A Heartsong Message

As I write this message, we have had a gor-

geous day full of sunshine and warmth, which

was a welcomed break from the abundance

of rain our region has experienced. I was re-

minded of how the plan for Jesus, although

dark, brought ultimate light. In the words of

Dr. Ralph Stanley, “The Darkest Hour is Just

Before Dawn”. I enjoy the season of Lent be-

cause it is a chance to reflect on the struggles

that life brings so not to take for granted the

grace and mercy given to us by our Lord. The

month of February brought a new tune to

Heartsong in Chris Tomlin’s “Resurrection

Power” which has been a great addition to

the Heartsong repertoire. The month of

March is an exciting time for the Heartsong

band as we lead worship with tunes in prepa-

ration for celebrating our Savior and Lord de-

feating death! Join us on this journey to Easter

every Sunday morning @11:15 A.M. in the

Fellowship Hall.

Our sympathies to these families.

Dale and Joni Cannon and family. Dale’s

mother Doris Cannon died on Tuesday, Feb-

ruary 6. Doris had been in declining health

for many years.

Carman Paulson and family. Carman’s moth-

er, Marlys Paulson died on February 11 in

Minnesota.

I want to thank you for the beautiful

shawl and the pretty little “Bear” you

sent me while I was getting over my

recent surgery. They still remind me of

God’s love and yours.

Keep up the good work there. I enjoy your news letters!

Reformation by R.C. Sproul on Monday, March

19 at 1 pm in the Church Library.

Katie Circle is using Max Lucado’s In the Grip

of Grace as their study on Wednesday, March

28 at 10:30 am in the Church Library.

National Youth Gathering Houston, Tx – June 27-July 1

Calling all High School Students as of Fall 2018! We are going to Houston. We will have fundraisers and fun to help cover the costs. Melting Pot

We will prepare and serve a

meal on March14. A volunteer

sign up sheet is on the bulletin

board near the library. Melting Pot served

223 meals on January 31 and 191on Febru-

ary 14.

Charity for March

“Manna House” Manna House serves males who have been

chronically homeless and who may have psy-

chological or substance abuse issues. Manna

House tries to be a safety net for men who soci-

ety has deemed worthless. They can house up

to 19 males for a maximum of two years. They

assess and train the clients to become em-

ployed. One need is computers for training.

Blood Drive Update

The next Marsh Blood Collection scheduled at OSLC will be on May 20. Mark your calendar

now. Marsh Blood Services has set a quota of 20-25 units of blood that must be collected for us

to be able to continue to have drives at OSLC.

We can meet their quota if we all work together! Start by telling anyone you know about the im-

portance of donating blood. One unit of blood can help up to three people in need. It doesn't

hurt--only a brief stick-- doesn't take long--about 30 minutes from start to finish and is very con-

venient to donate before or after the service you attend.

Make it a family affair. You have to be 17 years old (there is no upper age limit), females must

weigh at least 110 lbs, be in good health and be feeling well the day you donate.

Our High Road Sunday School Class is getting ready to host the annual Easter Egg Hunt. They need bags of individually wrapped Easter candy that can fit inside the plastic eggs used the day of the hunt. If you can provide a bag or two of candy, please leave it in the specially marked bas-kets located in the narthex and fellowship hall no later than Wednesday, March 21. Thank you so much for supporting our youth and their efforts in organizing this outreach activity.

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of death from cancer. Colo-rectal cancer affects all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people ages 50 and older.

The best way to prevent colorectal cancer is to get screened reg-ularly starting at age 50. There are often no signs or symptoms of colorectal cancer – that’s why it’s so important to get screened.

People over age 50 have the highest risk of colorectal cancer. You may also be at higher risk if you are African American, smoke, or have a family history of colorectal cancer. Everyone can take these healthy steps to help prevent colorectal cancer:

• Get screened starting at age 50.

• Encourage your family members and friends over age 50 to get screened.

• Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.

• Get plenty of physical activity and eat healthy.
