Jewel in th
e city
- contemporary jewellery student competition
Jewel in the CityBody adornment is both personal and public having the capacity to express
who we are and what we want to say about ourselves more quickly and
accurately than any verbal communication. Anyone regarding jewellery
as merely an adornment should consider the range and complexity of
ideas and products generated by a single theme.
‘Inside Out’ inspired designers from around the world to produce
wearable artefacts that could also be, for example, a thought provoking
idea, a pre-conceived notion turned on its head or a visual joke. For those
of us fortunate enough to be invited to be part of the judging panel the
enjoyment of unpacking entries was a unique pleasure. Each bubble-
wrapped parcel revealing carefully considered and beautifully constructed
pieces of body art. I was amused to see how many times each of us held
a piece to a wrist, lapel, waist – trying out the personal wearability of
the solutions. The variety of approaches and materials provided treat
after treat, taking us through a range that ran from humorous and
quirky through to complex and thought provoking. The very best work
demonstrated the essential elements of excellent design by elegantly
combining a thought provoking idea with technically skilled execution.
‘Inside Out’ was part of Ars Ornata Europeana, a major international
jewellery conference. This included an exciting and varied series of
exhibitions and events in and around The City and was launched at
Manchester Town Hall. Not only were designers from all over the world
invited to compete, but the undergraduate category was a rare opportunity
for students to take part in a major international conference and have
their work viewed by delegates from all over Europe. We all hope the
experience inspired emerging and talented young designers to continue
their practice and look forward to seeing their work in the future.
