• As a child, Jes played with her grandma’s costume jewelry. As

the years passed she began making her own jewelry out of rusty

bottle caps, feathers and washers she found on the road and in

the fields of Upstate NY. She grew up in

an incredibly artistic family of writers,

painters, sculptors and musicians.

• A graduate of Honeoye Falls -Lima

High School in Upstate New York, Jes

studied Illustration at Columbus College

of Art & Design in Columbus, OH. She

never took a jewelry class, but in every

spare moment made and gave jewelry

and adornments to friends and family.

• After college Jes worked at all

kinds of jobs in Upstate New York –

from selling flowers on street corners,

driving an ice cream truck, working as a

waitress, even knocking on doors to sell

her jewelry. All the while she continued

her fascination with making and giving away jewelry.

• In 1990, Jes was contacted by a handful of local retailers

interested in her early work. Before long, Jes’ designs and trunk

shows began driving traffic, and drawing a loyal following.

• Jes persevered in the early years – saving enough to buy

another piece of equipment – a torch, grinding wheel, etc. She

would also save to participate in national trade [buyer] shows.

• Jes’ first workshop was actually her

800-square-foot apartment; her first

workbench, a coffee table. Operations

grew until there was no space left. Her one

firm rule: the bedroom was off limits as a

workspace. Humble, warmly remembered

beginnings.

• In 1992, JES MAHARRY Jewelry was founded,

and Jes began adding new retailers in states

across the country.

• Jes moved operations to Sun Horse Ranch, in

Ojai, CA, where the business is based today.

• In 2000 JES

For a boutique studio, JES MAHARRY Jewelry is remarkably

prodigious. In addition to meeting a rising demand for her

established lines, Jes and her team create new elegant,

whimsical and moving designs week in and week out. What

drives this successful designer to never settle, to keep

pushing boundaries? Where does she find inspiration?

What’s behind her commitment to local artisans? We sat

down with her to find out.

WHat ConstitutEs grEat DEsign?

Something that moves your soul, or evokes an emotion

deep inside, or speaks to you and your senses in some way.

It may be color harmoniously mixed with different shapes,

or color on its own. I feel great design originates from the

creator’s heart – the final piece preserves all the passion

that was their at the time of inspiration. This is a big

question, and I could go on answering for quite a while!

WHErE Do You finD inspiration?

Life , nature and animals. I have deep compassion for all

living things. That’s the place I create from. I pay close

attention to beauty I experience every day, working on a

ranch so full of life, nature, organic gardens, and beautiful

rescued animals – over one hundred to date. I’ve got a

great love for animals – from my free spirited horses to my

sweet sheep. Ultimately, it goes back to what feels good

to me, which of course could be so many different things.

The beautiful Pacific Ocean, or a horseback ride up into the

mountains. A simple wildflower, or a conversation with my

little girls. I find inspiration in dreams, too. Something that

moves me – that’s what I create from.

WHat aCCounts for Your loYal folloWing?

Customers really understand what the JES MAHARRY

brand represents. When they fall in love with the beauty

of our jewelry, they also make an emotional connection to

what it says or represents. And that connection resonates

deep inside. For example, a customer writes to me to let me

know that the bracelet she wears reminds her every day to

look for beauty in the world. Another swears she can hear

the ocean whenever she wears her JES MAHARRY necklace;

the cuff she wears reminds her to never to give up. It’s a

special connection that each new customer discovers from

the first time they find us. Most important, I feel I have a

loyal following because of the love I put into each piece .

Throughout the years the most common thing I have heard

is that my jewelry makes people feel so good.

WHat arE Your faVoritE piECEs?

Hmmm.... there have been so many great ones. I would say one of my favorites is my

famous “Grow Strong” Tree ring. The tree is symbolic of wisdom and strength. I like to

use symbolism in most everything I design. There are a few “Unforgettables, “ or custom

pieces, that will always have a place in my mind as well as my heart – the beautiful rose

gold piece of a kind moon with opalescent stones mixed with my symbolic charms – a true

gypsy piece. I also love my “Worry-Free” charm – the feel is of it is truly divine. And I always

love my incredibly rare trade bead pieces. I love to think about all of the places those

amazing beads have been and where they might go, as my jewelry is purchased and sent

out to places worldwide.

I design my jewelry with the hope that they will bring a bit of beauty to your world, and

a measure of solace and peace to you. Over the years I have received thousands of letters

from people sharing how the personal quality of JES MAHARRY jewelry encouraged them

through tough times, brought a smile to a dying loved one, conveyed feelings of luck or

love, or marked a right-of-passage. I am blessed to be able to share

my true love for what I do with people across the world. Even as our

From within the colorful walls of her Sun Horse Studio, Jes not only creates beauty through

her art, but she inspires the folks she works with. Jes encourages the best throughout her

company, and gives each individual an opportunity to shine. There is nothing ordinary

about the work environment at Sun Horse Ranch. Turns out the people are happy and

love what they do. With regular company outings, hikes and potlucks, as well as benefits,

Jes tends too her employees’ spiritual and financial welfare. Jes also extends her hands

further into the community through her involvement with animal rescue, volunteering at

her daughter’s school and she is currently setting up a scholarship incentive program to

support youth in the arts.

Ever since she was a little girl Jes has felt deeply connected to the animal kingdom. Her

empathy shines through in her designs and has always been a major inspiration in her life.

Devoted to animal rescue, her ranch is alive with

creatures of all shapes and sizes – to date, over 30

rescued animals, and more than 100 foster animals.

Many roam the studio and sleep on laps or under

foot. Horses, dogs, cats, donkeys, goats and sheep

needing homes have found one here. Jes stops by

the pound regularly to save animals from being put

down and boarding them until she can find them

a loving family. Donating to animal rescue programs and educating people about the

importance of spaying and neutering, adopting instead of buying, and not supporting

puppy mills and unethical breeding practices are some of the ways she helps give our loyal

friends a second chance.

The KPCS or Kimberly Process Certification Scheme is a process introduced by the United

Nations in 2003. It was created to insure that all rough cut diamonds originate from sources

which are Conflict-Free. The United States participates in the KPCS and JES MAHARRY uses

only reputable diamond suppliers that strictly adhere to this agreement. Since gemstones

are often mined in developing nations where workers are easily taken advantage of, JES

MAHARRY also acquires her precious stones from only socially responsible companies.

They provide monthly medical camps, educational programs that ensure all minorities are

provided proper education and are not forced into a life of labor at an early age.

rEClaiMED MEtal

Conventional precious metal mining has always been an area of controversy as it

generates significant waste, and contaminants the land and its inhabitants. For this reason

Jes only sources from companies that use reclaimed and recycled metal. All scrap metal is

recycled, and only led-free pewter is used.

The recent expansion of JES MAHARRY product lines has given her even more opportunities

to enforce socially responsible practices in crafting her goods. Her clothing line is 100%

organic and all garments are locally hand-sewn and dyed using low impact natural

pigments. Her line of essential oils are derived from wild or organic plants whenever

possible. The frames she paints and embellishes are made from recycled and reclaimed

glass, cardboard and solid pine, assembled by young people working alongside adult

mentors in a supportive non-profit environment. JES MAHARRY has had some inquiries

about the leather used in her products; she wants to reassure everyone that she only uses

leather acquired from cattle already being used for their meat; in addition, the deer suede

she designs with, is collected by a woman who reclaims the skins of deer left by hunters.

Virtually every aspect of the JES MAHARRY business is in line with the highest

environmental standards including the day to day; eating local organic foods, using

recycled paper goods, earth friendly cleaning products, driving a hybrid and always

keeping herself educated on the latest in alternative solutions.

JES MAHARRY was founded by Jes MaHarry in 1992. In 1999 Jes was joined by her metalsmith

husband, Patrick.Today the company employs a team of artisans, and JES MAHARRY Jewelry

is collected worldwide. On the cutting edge of the jewelry industry, Jes was a pioneer in the

field of mixed-media jewelry. Now found in exclusive shops, galleries and boutiques across

the country. Jes’ distinctive style caught the attention of Robert Redford’s Sundance Catalog

in 2000, where she has been the most featured, best-selling jewelry designer for over a

decade. In 2004 JES MAHARRY launched an e-commerce Web site. In 2009, a “debut” catalog

and necklaces at the low end range from $99 to $399 and the higher end can range from

24 rose or yellow gold, platinum, and include precious and semi-precious gems, including

conflict-free diamonds, rare turquoise, agates over millions of years old, rare artifacts or

rare African antique trade beads. Silver rings range from $99 to $5,700, and anything made

of gold, including encrusted diamonds, ranges between $1,200 and $17,000. Earrings range

and The College of Cardinals request a JES MAHARRY favorite, the

original Peace Dove charm.

JES MAHARRY supports the College Track preparatory program,

www.collegetrack.org. Their goal is to transform low-income

communities into places where college readiness and college

graduation are the norm. For a recent fundraiser in San Francisco,

Lauren Jobs, Steve Job’s wife, Founder of Apple, Inc., invited Jes as

her personal guest. Jes was commissioned to create the “College

Track” fundraiser bracelet for an exciting event held at the Lucas

Theatre. Jes was thrilled when the winning bid on her auction

item, “A day spent designing with Jes on the ranch,” was $32,000,

all of which was donated to the good cause.
