Between 1933 and 1945, the Nazis and their collaborators murdered 6,000,000 Jews and many others. Millions more spent these years living in concentration camps, work camps, ghettos or as refugees. Today approximately 80,000 Holocaust survivors live in the United States. With an average age greater than 85, many are 90 years of age or older. Shockingly, one-third have incomes below the official U.S. poverty threshold, limiting their ability to receive care that meets their specific needs. Holocaust survivors live with the physical, mental, and social scars from the traumas they faced. Although aging Holocaust survivors have needs similar to those of other older Americans, the consequences of premature or unnecessary institutionalizations can be more severe for this population. For many, institutionalized settings produce sights, sounds, smells, emotions, and routines which can induce panic, anxiety, and re- traumatization as a result of their experiences during the Holocaust. The TIME for Holocaust Survivors Act focuses on allowing these survivors to age in place with dignity, comfort, security, and quality of life, at the end of their lives. Specifically, this bill: Prioritizes the needs of Holocaust survivors within the Older Americans Act; Creates an Administration for Community Living portfolio that focuses on Holocaust survivors and serves as a liaison with other agencies throughout the federal government; Establishes a national resource center to share best practices and promote person-centered trauma-informed care for agencies that serve older adults experiencing the long-term and adverse consequences of trauma; Ensures that providers of nutrition and transportation services can meet the special health-related or other dietary needs and the mobility needs of Holocaust survivors; and Reports annually on the status and needs of Holocaust survivors and how the aging network is identifying and serving older adults experiencing the long- term and adverse consequences of trauma. Holocaust survivors today are aging and entering their final years. We must uphold our responsibilities and provide Holocaust survivors with the best possible care and treat them in a manner that honors their lives. This legislation, should it become law, will go a long way toward meeting that goal. Please cosponsor the TIME for Holocaust Survivors Act now. Sincerely, Steven R. Executive Director’s Message - Steven WendellTIMe for Holocaust Survivors Act

The following letter, coordinated thru the Jewish Federation of North America, was sent to our Virginia United States Senators along with similar letters from Federations, JCCs, and other Jewish and non-Jewish organizations throughout the country.

Dear Senator:

We, the more than 275 undersigned organizations and institutions, representing millions of Americans strongly support the recently-introduced Trauma-Informed Modernization of Eldercare for Holocaust Survivors Act (aka the TIME for Holocaust Survivors Act). This bipartisan legislation will ensure that Holocaust survivors living in the United State have access to the care and services that align with their needs.

For many, institutionalized settings produce sights, sounds, smells, emotions, and routines which can induce panic, anxiety, and re-traumatization as a result of their experiences during the Holocaust.

The TIME for Holocaust Survivors Act focuses on allowing these survivors to age in place with dignity, comfort, security, and quality of life, at the end of their lives. Specifically, this bill:

Prioritizes the needs of Holocaust survivors within the Older Americans Act; Creates an Administration for Community Living portfolio that focuses on Holocaust survivors and serves as a liaison with other agencies throughout the federal government;

Establishes a national resource center to share best practices and promote person-centered trauma-informed care for agencies that serve older adults experiencing the long-term and adverse consequences of trauma;

Ensures that providers of nutrition and transportation services can meet the special health-related or other dietary needs and the mobility needs of Holocaust survivors; and

Reports annually on the status and needs of Holocaust survivors and how the aging network is identifying and serving older adults experiencing the long-term and adverse consequences of trauma.

Sincerely,Steven R. Wendell, Executive DirectorUnited Jewish Community of the VA Peninsula

Director of Development Message - Sarah BarnettThe Power of... ...Play, & arts and crafts at summer camp. These smiles say it all. Summer is fun and we have fun, at Camp Chaverim! Sixty, plus children running, swimming, drawing, learning about Israel and Judaism, and making lasting friendships with one another. We have the power to touch children’s lives, and to create community bonds.

Our ACA, accredited summer day camp is a crucial part of our core programming at the UJCVP and is not possible without the support of our Annual Campaign donors. Thank you all for helping to make these memories!

Together we Have the Power to build community.

The LOJE Party was a Huge Success.

The Power of Philanthropy!On June 30th, Lion and Chai Society donors enjoyed a brunch celebrating women’s giving and recognizing fourteen women who have endowed their Lion of Judah gift in order to leave a permanent legacy at the UJCVP. We enjoyed great food, great friends, and tributes to all 14 of these women who are all such a great example of giving by creating a legacy that will produce an annual campaign gift in perpetuity.

Worldwide there are 17,500 Lion of Judah donors and over 4,000 of these women have created a Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE). The estimated total assets of these endowments is almost $700M. A Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE) requires a minimum contribution of $100,000 to our UJCVP Endowment and can be funded and activated during or after a donor’s lifetime. The recognition of our fourteen LOJE’s was inspiring, as each one has a unique story of her own contribution and motivation. From our Endowed Lions who are no longer

with us to our youngest LOJE in her forties, this is an awe-inspiring group of women. We continue to honor their commitment to community:

Camp builds connection…This week’s top three:1) The picture to the right speaks for itself: the camp relationships that campers make with teen and young adult counselors are unique and impactful. They are warm, fuzzy, and genuine and have a different feel than what a child gets from a teacher during the year. 2) This morning, outside a Camp Sarfan (preschool age) door I heard a gleeful three year old Sienna yell, “I got to go upside down with Jonathan!”, meaning that our beloved Israeli shaliach, Jonathan (Yonatan) had scooped her up and to her delight had held her upside down. So many of our kids have become attached to Jonathan and his summer colleague, Lior, both brought to us through our relationship with the Jewish Agency for Israel. 3) Yesterday, 16 year old, preschool, Hebrew School, and camp Alum, Josh, drove himself to the UJCVP campus just to “see everyone”. Josh has not missed a summer on this campus since he arrived at age 2, and though this summer he is busy with Governor’s School and Jewish overnight camp, he still found the time to drop in. To see Carmela’s face when he walked in the door was to think that the Mashiach him/herself had arrived or that her long-lost son had returned home after a long hiatus. Not a far stretch as Carmela considers all of these children her own. Building Community means creating connections, relationships, and memories that last a lifetime.

Making Trouble: Three Generations of Funny Jewish WomenWednesday, August 28, 2019 at 7-9pmWine, cheese, and chocolate

“What is it that makes funny Jewish women so funny…and so Jewish? Is it a nose wrinkled just so, accompanied by a devilishly sexy grin or a jolting and sarcastic punch line? Is it the acerbic humor of generations of immigrant and first-generation women who fought for a place in America with their brains and their wit, and at the same time needed to make a living? Making Trouble celebrates three generations who, for all of the reasons above, successfully went from vaudeville and the Yiddish theatre to Broadway, from Ziegfeld’s Follies to Saturday Night Live.” -San Francisco Jewish Film Festival

Tikkun OlamVentures (TOV) Using Israeli AgTech to Help Africa’s Poorest Farmer

TOV (Tikkun Olam Ventures), JDC’s new development assistance project, leverages Jewish philanthropy and mobilizes Israel’s innovative agricultural technology (AgTech) and expertise to transform the lives of smallholder farmers in developing societies.

JDC’s decades of experience working in Ethiopia and Israel make us perfectly positioned to match Israeli AgTech and know-how with the needs of Ethiopia’s millions of smallholder farmers, who struggle to increase their crop yields and improve their well-being, part of the 1.5 billion people worldwide who still practice traditional farming methods. Without adopting AgTech, one of Israel’s strengths, traditional farmers will not break out of the cycle of poverty.

Launched with a two-year pilot program in Ethiopia, TOV started with seven demonstration sites — and will expand to provide loans to agricultural enterprises supporting 300-400 farmers growing tomatoes, onions, and hot peppers using Israeli drip irrigation and fertilization systems, hybrid seeds designed to enhance productivity, and training in new agricultural practices. The goal is to reach 4,000-5,000

Ethiopian farmers over a five-year period, benefiting more than 25,000 people overall.

Developed and managed by JDC’s GRID—our global disaster response and innovative development arm—TOV was inspired by noted philanthropist Seth Merrin, founder and CEO of the fintech company Liquidnet, which provided the anchor grant for TOV through its corporate impact program, Liquidnet for Good. They were joined by Laura Gurwin Flug and Danielle Flug Capalino, two leading New York City-based Jewish leaders – in creating the philanthropic loan fund at the core of the TOV initiative.

It leverages additional funding from an Ethiopian bank to provide loans that enable the farmers to purchase the AgTech seeds, equipment, and technical support they need to increase their yields. Local farmers’ unions and agribusinesses will also help the farmers get fair prices for their produce in previously untapped markets. Repaid loans will go back into the loan fund, to be used by farmers taking part in similar programs in additional locations.TOV also forged a five-year strategic partnership with the Israel Economic Ministry’s Foreign Trade Administration, which is actively seeking to deepen Israel’s impact on the “base of the pyramid” in Africa.

In life changing moments like this, I long for a mikveh in our community where I could go to center myself and tangibly thank יהוה for this blessing – and to let go of all of the anxiety and stress of the past few months and emerge from the living waters with a new lease on life.
