SANGGU

- Bring men and women to the ideal state: Four Pillars… o Academic Excellence o Cultural Rootedness o Responsibility o Spiritual Maturity

- Student Movement Integration o Advocacies o Helping the Poor o Representing Ateneo students in National Issues and Concerns

§ Bridging the gap is part of “nation-building” § We should get students involved in nation-building.

• Being professionals FOR OTHERS;

John Gokongwei School of Management School Board Room 200 MVP Student Leadership Center, Ateneo de Manila University

We are your sole autonomous student government. We voice out your concerns. We protect your welfare. We form the community. We are entrusted to lead and committed to serve.

We are your SANGGUNIAN.

• Caring about national issues § When views and insights between different parts of the

student body are conflicting… • Hold talks, promote discourse

§ We want to be, apart from reactive, a proactive student body.

§ Take action in the upcoming Elections: • Voter’s Registration • Voter’s Education • Poll-Watching

- Representation

o All of our projects should go through our representatives § To be implemented, projects must have the support of a

majority vote from the representatives of the students § Each representative in the SB has a vote per project § For course-specific / batch-specific projects, that batch

alone can vote on whether it will be implemented. § Chairman and Secretary-Treasurer vote in all cases. § Must come up with venues to collect this data

• Surveys, FGDs o House of Representatives

§ Must be represented, via proxy if rep can’t go. o Representation in School-Wide Issues

§ Be active on Bantay-Halalan § Attend PlanSems, FormSems, and Plenaries

• Constituents must have a say in our planning o We are representing our constituents not so much in dealing

with other students, but with the administration as well. § We represent students when it comes to non-student

bodies. § Do not focus on conflicts between student groups.

o Feedback from Grand Consultation (show the output) o Make our identity as a SANGGU seen in our projects

§ Not as the SOM School Board alone, but as the greater body, including the Top 4, and all the other schools

§ Collaborate with other schools (i.e. SOSE) within Ateneo.

- Services o Basic Services for Students

§ Announcements § Re: School Services

We are your SANGGUNIAN.

§ Services that need improvement: • Medical Check-Ups

o Organize the time-slots for Check-Ups better • OAS

o It’s too complicated at present. RED TAPE. § Come up with a list of PROTOCOL for Reps

• FAQ • “Directory” as to where to turn for what information

o SANGGU Visibility § Projects that aren’t seen aren’t felt by the constituents. § Constituents remain unsatisfied, resulting in a bad working

relationship with their Sanggunian. § Suggested Solutions

• Use Marketing and Promotions to UNIFY • Template our Announcements

§ We need to reform how we present ourselves to the public, and how the representatives themselves see SANGGU and their role within it.

SCHOOL BOARD

- We, as the JGSOM School Board, can make our own stand in issues, and through this, represent JGSOM students.

SUMMER AGENDA

- Dates to Remember o April 12: Release to our constituents what projects the School

Board could potentially pursue. This list of projects should include projects suggested both by the School Board, and by the constituents themselves.

o April 28: Deadline for VOTES of the REPRESENTATIVES, based on votes of the constituents, regarding what projects they wish the School Board to pursue. Refer to Representation Bullet 1 for mechanics on this.

o May 11: Deadline for the consolidation of the list of proposed projects with no money involved. These projects will then be deliberated on by the School Board, through the voting procedure.

o May 13: Propose the budget for the projects finalized on April 28, to the Central Board.

o May 25: Leadership Training and Team Building. This involves the formation of representatives, including SANGGU101, to

re-orient them on the role and responsibilities of a representative of the student body.

o June 1-2: School Board PlanSem. Here, the JGSOM School Board will wrap up it’s summer planning, assigning project heads to approved projects, and having the internal departments recruit their members.

GOALS AND THRUSTS

- Evaluation of the JGSOM SB in SY 2011-2012 o There was a lot of down-time, when it came to work. o Because work came in bursts, and there were periods of time

where the Reps weren’t doing anything SANGGU-related, Reps came to see SANGGU as a part-time commitment

o Reps don’t understand their own roles and responsibilities; don’t understand the gravity and importance of their role.

o Tried to make people active by having everyone head a project, but that didn’t work well. Perhaps people should be allowed to be active in a way that plays to their strengths instead.

o Reps don’t prioritize SANGGU because it clashes with home orgs. Home Orgs provide some of the same basic services that we do for their members, so the redundancy causes people to choose: one or the other.

o Reps were very lax. (Result of Bullets 1, 2, and 3) o People don’t see the relevance on SANGGU, hence they don’t

care about the projects and services provided. o Visibility: How do we let them know what we’re actually doing,

without looking bratty or petty by calling attention to our work? o SANGGU needs to cater more to the avenues that are the reason

why people choose to invest themselves in their home organizations.

o Reps need to feel the same level of investment we do. § Through greater INVOLVEMENT in SB Activities

o Do we have follow-through projects after unifying the batches? All of our projects focus on [Step 1: Unity].

o We need to assess whether our projects REALLY help the students.

o Most of our work this year was focused on Services. We should look into working on Student Movement Integration (SM Blue, RH, FOI, STRAW)

o We should use our expertise in doing Nation Building § Social Enterprises § Micro-Volunteerism

§ This should be ONE avenue, but not our ONLY avenue. § Externalize JGSOM in this endeavor

- Strategic Entry-Points

o INTERNAL (SANGGU) § Member Development (Representative Empowerment) § Better Manifesting/Exhibiting the SANGGU Identity

• Visibility; Satisfying the constituents; Increase the understanding of SANGGU’s work to improve relations, and improve the work we’re able to do.

• Improve Admin/Department Relations with SANGGU (helps in Services)

o INTERNAL (JGSOM)

§ Change our approach: Streamlined Consultation Process to involve the input and insights of our constituents in our key decisions, such as projects to be implemented, and Student Movement Integration matters.

§ Reinforce Participative Representation (Engagement with the Student Body through Dialogue) in the work of the JGSOM School Board.

o EXTERNAL (Ateneo + World)

§ Clarification: We want to increase the JGSOM Student Body’s involvement with characters and groups outside of JGSOM, and possibly outside of the Ateneo as well.

§ Manifesting Nation Building in the development of SOM Skills

§ Student Involvement in National Affairs (SMI) - Thrust

o “In working towards the goal of investing the students in building the nation, the JGSOM School Board of the Sanggunian for SY ’12-’13 will pursue the following:

§ Further exhibiting the SANGGU identity (in the context of the constitution and its role in the Ateneo Loyola Schools) through representative empowerment

§ Engaging the School of Management constituency in JGSOM School Board pursuits

§ Incorporating Nation Building in the development of JGSOM competencies in its constituents

§ Advocating student involvement in national affairs”

• Lack of Advertising and Promotions • Fine-tune the details • Ask CTM if they’d like Acc15 Easy A

§ GK Activities • GK Enchanted Farm

o Take the tour to the next level: involvement, not just touring the place.

o Potentially, progress to the “next level” every year.

§ Define what each “next level” would be • GK Build + Personal Touch

o Bring back the GK Builds, but add a portion wherein students share a meal with the families for whom they are building the house.

§ Major’s Manual • Tie-up with SOSS (and potentially, SOH and SOSE) • Specific descriptions of major courses; feedback

from upperclassmen § Batch Outreach

• Once a semester, tie-up with an organization for their expertise on an issue, and work to address this issue.

• Each semester, cater to a different issue. GK CSI – JGSOM SB COLLABORATION

- GK CSI is hoping to collaborate with JGSOM SANGGU, creating avenues for social entrepreneurship.

- Willing to provide many forms of support: investors, mentors, tie-ups with other universities (DLSU, among others).

- Potentially link LS projects to AIM’s MBA student mentors. o Goal is to have the thesis projects become something that can

be scaled even after the school year ends. - GK CSI isn’t particular with the branding; we can own the enterprise,

and they’ll give us the support, as long as we commit long-term to doing the work to develop the enterprise.

o Inter-batch student groups, for long-term commitment. __________________________________________________________________ Prepared by: Jose Javier V. Poe IV JGSOM Sanggunian Secretary Treasurer
