Jim Jones and Bob Pratt – Healing Hands at the End of a Lifecycle

When a member of the Beth Shalom community passes away, an overflow-ing of support and love comes to the bereaved. It is not unusual for meals to be catered, children to be cared for, and each house sitting Shiva full of family and friends. This community is blessed to have so many caring individuals who would stop at nothing to ensure those in mourn-ing are fully cared for. Sometimes, however, two exceptional people, who have made it their life’s work to comfort and care for the grief-stricken, can be forgotten. We want to say a long overdue thank you to Jim Jones and Bob Pratt, the caretakers of Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Jim and Bob have worked at Mt. Carmel for twenty-four and twenty-three years, respectively. Jim recalls fondly August 2, 1995 as “A great day.” For this was the day Bob Pratt started, and the two men have been working side-by-side ever since. In speaking of their time together, they both laugh and say, “We have to lie to each other to say anything new!” They are quite the pair. Mt. Carmel Cemetery is 27 acres and is fully maintained by Jim and Bob. When asked what made you stay here for so long, Jim responds, “The People. I love helping people. But also, it’s this place [Mt. Carmel]. I just love this place.”

His and Bob’s love of Mt. Carmel is confirmed by the impeccable grounds and the stunning recently renovated Yukon Chapel. As Bob says, “The Cem-etery has a life of its own.” There is so much that goes into keeping Mt. Carmel pristine, from stopping vandals from disrespecting the facility to cleaning up after large storms. But you couldn’t see any of this stress on either of their faces. In his free time, Jim is an avid deer hunter, and a proud father of Nicholas and Jordan. Bob, a veteran of the United States Army, is a motorcycle enthusiast and often partakes in rides for charity. Most notably America’s 9/11 Ride, a ride dedicated to supporting all active first responders nation-wide. Jim Jones and Bob Pratt are integral parts of the Beth

Shalom community. They have been there to catch numer-ous people as they fall from grief or merely exhaustion. They are there to find you the perfect stone to place on your family member’s grave. They are the people helping to lay your loved ones down in their final home. Jim and Bob truly care for everyone who comes through the gate at Mt. Carmel. When asked what the worst part of work-ing at Mt. Carmel is, Jim responds, “It’s getting to know everyone who comes to visit their loved ones. And then soon, they’ll be gone too. It often feels like we are losing our friends, too.”

Fro m t h e R a bb i ’s S t u d yThe Importance of Cheshvan

Cheshvan, the Hebrew month immediately fol-lowing Tishrei, is known in Jewish tradition as “Marcheshvan” - a pun meaning “Bitter” Cheshvan.

It is called this because it is a month with no holidays, but it follows the month with so many holidays. Of course, for congregational clergy, there is also a certain “sweetness” as opposed to “bitterness” when we get a break from the wonderful singing, davening, dancing and eating. But aside from the tongue in cheek bless-ings of a break for so much work, there is real blessing in Marcheshvan. I’d like to share a piece of a teach-ing I gave in synagogue on Parsashat

Rabbi David M. [email protected]

Noach as it relates to this holy month. There is a mysterious verse in the story of Noah. God says to Noah and his family “Leave the Ark!” Why would Noah need to be told to leave the ark? Wouldn’t that be obvious? In a lecture given in the 1980’s, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Menachem Mendel Schneerson, spoke about how the Hebrew word for “Ark” (“teivah”) is the same as the Hebrew word for “word.” During the entire time in the Ark, Noah was busy with the word of God. This, Rabbi Schneerson explained, is similar to the month of Tishrei. From the listening to the shofar on Rosh HaShanah, to the fasting on Yom Kippur, to the Sukkah dwelling and

lulav shaking on Sukkot, culminat-ing in the dancing on Simchat Torah, we spend an entire month engaged in the worship of God. Though we need Tishrei - God doesn’t want us to spend the entire YEAR in Tishrei. The purpose of our existence is to leave the Ark; to leave the place of prayer, study and holy celebration and go into the world to repair the de-struction and fill it with life. Of course, we need the time of prayer and celebration too. The learn-ing, the praying, the dancing – this is the fuel that gives us the energy to do the sacred acts of world-fixing.

On November 11, we will observe the fifth yahrtzeit of our beloved Rabbi Morris B. Margolies, who was Senior Rabbi of CBS from 1961 to 1986 and thereafter Rabbi.

Yahrtzeit of Rabbi Morris B. Margolies Rabbi Margolies’ yahrtzeit is on the 25th of Cheshvan. In honor of the occasion, Rabbi Margolies’ son, Dan, will be reading the Torah portion and delivering that week’s d’var Torah on

the Shabbat leading up to his yahrtz-eit. Please join Dan and the entire Beth Shalom family as we observe the yahrtzeit of our departed Rabbi.

The “Gabbai” is an integral part of both synagogue worship and the entire fabric of the syna-gogue community. Their dedication and assistance make our worship services warm and meaning-ful. On Shabbat morning, November 11, we will be bringing all of the gabbayim to the bimah for recognition and holding a special Kiddush in their honor. The Congregation invites all members and their families to join us in thanking our gabbayim for all they do at Beth Shalom.

Execut i ve l y Speak ingand grandparents attending the ser-vices with their kids. The services for Sukkot and Simchat Torah were also very moving. We had a very special morning for Simchat Torah where we recognized Alan Edel-man and Rita Cortes for all of their contributions to the synagogue. I also have to give a great shout out to our terrific staff. They always are able to rise to the occasion, and do what is needed, and I know that they always appreciate the smiles and Thank yous that they receive. I want to thank all of you that con-tributed to the High Holiday Appeal. It is our largest fundraiser, and a major reason why we have been able to have

a balanced budget and provide all of the programs and services that are needed. The activity at the building has certainly picked up with both the Rose Family Early Childhood Center and the Polsky Religious School getting up to speed. It’s great to see all of our children in the building and the ex-citement as they continue their Jewish education. I know that this is one of the major tenets of the synagogue, and a very important aspect to pass on our Jewish Values to the next generation. I look forward to a great year, and thanks again for all you do to support Congrega-tion Beth Shalom.

The Gabbai is the lay person who calls up those honored to say the bless-ings over the reading of the Torah, prompts and corrects the Torah reader, helps guests who come up on the bimah and is responsible for knowing special prayers and honors for Shab-bat and holidays. It takes work and preparation, but the Gabbai makes the Torah Service run smoothly. It may

not always be obvious how important the Gabbai is to the service, but to vol-unteer as a Gabbai is a mitzvah in the broadest sense. So - how can you become a Gabbai? If you are post Bar/Bat Mitzvah, read Hebrew fluently and have an under-standing of trope, you can attend a two-session workshop from 7:00 to 8:30 pm on the following dates:

Have You Ever Thought Of Becoming A Gabbai? Sunday & Thursday, Nov. 5th & 9th OR Sunday & Thursday, Nov. 12th & 16th. The 12th will be a repeat of the 5th and the 16th a repeat of the 9th for those who are unable to attend two sessions in the same week. Each ses-sion will be led by Hazzan Ben-Yehuda. For more information, or to make your reservation, contact the Hazzan’s office at 913-647-7286.

I want to first thank everyone that helped and participated in all of our High Holiday Services. It was very meaningful, and the feedback that I received

from other congregants was also very positive. The Rabbi and Hazzan did a wonderful job of organizing and lead-ing the services. I also want to thank Yachad-The Travelling Tefillah Band, Rabbi Rudnick, Jimmy Rosenbloom, Jason Krakow, Norm Kahn, Ilan Ben-Yehuda, Rabbi Ben-Yehuda and Marla Brockman for their contribu-tions. The Young Family services, led by Linda Salvay, were also a great hit, and I was glad to see all the parents

The Prayerbook: New Interpre-tive Methods will examine the many prayers composed over the years that comprise our siddur. Students will learn what the prayers actually mean and learn to relate to them in a more personal way. I’m reminded of the story of the man who walked 10 miles each day to improve his health. At the end of 30 days, he found himself 300 miles

from home. He didn’t know where he was, how he got there, or how to get back. He was lost. If we have no idea where we are going, any place we land is the place we were destined to be. We may be lost, but lost was apparently our destination. Let us say your family is going on a vacation, but has not decided where to go. While packing

the car, you try to determine the best route to get there. But, where is there? Without a defined destination, any route becomes the road to nowhere. Any route becomes the best route. The same is true as we travel down life’s highway. Once we set out to attain a goal or make our dreams a reality, be it a job, peace of mind, love, a home, retirement savings, or a host of other destinations, we can work to find the best way for us to reach that destination. If we believe we can succeed, we have an excellent chance of getting there. But if we allow our mind to become clouded with negativity and find every reason why we cannot reach our life’s

destination, we will find reasons why we cannot fulfill our goals and dreams. We will be lost in our own world. It takes as much effort to determine the best way to get to where you want to go as it does to determine all the reasons why you cannot get there. Keep positive. Believe in yourself. Believe you can reach your destination and figure out all the things you can do to get there. As the old song goes, "you have to accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative, latch on to the affirmative, and don’t mess with Mr. In-between".Safe travels.

Life Lesson 2: Think Positively

The fall holidays at Beth Shalom Rose Family ECEC were amazing!Linda Salvay led our Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur services for our young families, and they were both enjoyable and very meaningful. Sukkot was great! We started Suk-kot with young family services led by Rabbi Glickman ending with a spe-cial lunch and cookie and cupcake decorating. All the preschool classes ate snack in the sukkah all week. The best treat of all was that the PreK classes and their parents went to breakfast in Rabbi David and An-

nie Glickman’s sukkah! The kids loved shaking the lulav with Rabbi Glick-man and being in their sukkah was such a great experience! We are looking forward to many more fun activities in November. Paramont Ponies will be here with their great petting farm. Martin City Drama Company is performing a play for our preschoolers. For Thanksgiving, the children will decorate turkey-shaped cookies and we’ll have an in-school Thanksgiving party. We always have fun at Rose Family ECEC!

What do you do when you're burnt out? What can you do, other than press on and hope to get a chance to recharge? The hebrew month of Marcheshvan is just that time. Some of us may feel shul-weary. We have spent so much time in holiday mode. We have pulled out all the holiday recipes

and feasted with our families, heard the shofar, prayed all the hard words to all the moving tunes in long services. We built and ate in the Sukkah, and we shook our lulavs and deeply inhaled the citrus scent of the etrogs. We danced and sang with Torah Scrolls, and now we are tired. We hope we did, said, prayed, ate, danced, sang enough - and now it's time to keep calm and carry on. The books are closed. The gates are closed. To everything there is a time and a season - and now it's time to go back to normal - for me, at least, it's hard to believe it's really over. The Hebrew calendar gives us a gift, and it's Marchesh-van, a month with no holidays, where we are able to find

the holy; the sacred in our everyday lives. We have time to spend with family, full weeks of school, of work. The next holiday on the horizon is Hanukkah. This gives us time to catch our breath. So the question I have for you is this - what will you do with your breath? I thought I'd share with you my goal for this year -- I hope to bring more of you into relationships with each other this year. I hope to create opportunities for you to come together to learn, to pray, to eat and to celebrate. I hope to entice you to try something new this year. Between Gabbai classes in November, Trope classes in January or February, Peltzman classes throughout the year, Gesher holiday and Shabbat dinners, Rimon services throughout the year and Sunday morning PRS and com-munity breakfast, there are lots of ways to connect with me and with each other. Add a free lunch every single Shabbat afternoon, and we have no excuse not to get to know each other better this year. I look forward to seeing you soon!

As a member of Beth Shalom, you are entitled to sign your high school child(ren)

up to participate in one of several different Israel programs. The costs of these trips continue to rise annually. Beth Shalom and the Jewish Community Foundation are aware of how expensive these trips can

be and encourage each of you to sign your children up for Passport to Israel--a saving incentive program designed to help families plan for their children’s high school trips. Congregation Beth Shalom believes very strongly in its support of this program and now offers our members two ways to participate:Option 1 From 2nd grade through 8th grade, families contribute $150, the Congregation contributes $50, and the Jewish Community Foundation will match this combined $200 with another $100 for a combined total of $300.

Option 2 From 2nd grade through 8th grade, Congregation Beth Shalom will contribute $100, if families will increase their contributions to $200, and the Jewish Community Foun-dation will match this combined $300, with another $100 for a combined total of $400. Congregation Beth Shalom has opened this program to Second Graders; however, the Jewish Community will not participate in the Second Grade contribution, but will in all subsequent years. The Beth Shalom additional funds will apply from 2nd through 8th grade only, and the community funds will only apply for 3rd through 8th grade. Beth Shalom has established certain criteria to determine the eligibility of our students for this program. Participat-ing families must be in good standing. The deadline for applications is December 15, 2017. For more information on eligibility and enrollment, contact Jill at 913-647-7286 or [email protected].

Parashat HaShavua

Parashat HaShavua is an ongoing, monthly program taking place every third Shabbat of the month at 9:00 am in the conference room. The goal of this program is to engage its par-ticipants in a stimulating discussion of

the weekly Torah portion in a friendly atmosphere, where the difference of opinions is respected and questions are encouraged. The next session will take place on November 18, when Parashat Toldot will be discussed. An informal atmo-

sphere and deep level of discussion are the trademarks of this gathering. No prior experience is required, and everybody is welcome to join. For more information, contact Svetlana Sorkin at 913-393-1715 or [email protected].
