About JLPT

Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT)

Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is an internationally recognized test to measure and certify the Japanese Language Proficiency of persons whose native language is not Japanese. JLPT is organized jointly by The Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges & Services (JEES) , Japan.

JLPT certification is the most valued in terms of recognition of Japanese Language skills and abilities.

JLPT certification is not only an academic credit but also preferred graduation qualification at many Japanese companies.

Certification Eligibility Criteria

Education Background

Not specified; but a bachelor’s degree or a global equivalent is preferable.

Language Background

The candidate must be a non-native speaker of Japanese language i.e. the mother tongue should not be Japanese.

Physical abilities Background

The examination has a section for “Listening Comprehension” and persons with hearing disabilities will not be able to take the same.

However, if the candidate submits a valid medical certificate to the examination authority, this section may be excluded.

Certification Level

There are 5 levels in JLPT and candidate may opt for any level, irrespective of the past certification level.

Study Hours needed (ref. only)

-N5 = 150 [easy] -N2 = 600-N4 = 300 -N1 = 900 [hard]-N3 = 450

The ability to understand some basic Japanese.

Reading : Ability to read and understand typical expressions and

sentences written in hiragana, katakana and basic kanji.

Listening : Ability to listen and comprehend conversations about

topics regularly encountered in daily life and classroom situations.

Ability to pick up necessary information from short conversations spoken slowly.

Introduction to Japanese Language, alphabets and Romaji script

Introduction to Hiragana and Katakana systems of writing

Introduction to simple conversations, routine expressions and greetings

Vocabulary and phrases (800 words) used in daily life

Introduction to Kanji (100 basic kanji), Onyomi and Kunyomi readings

Introduction to simple readings in Kanji-Kana pattern using Furigana

Verbs, adjectives, particles, interrogatives, infinitives and tense

Conjunctions, usage of WA & GA, negative sentences and plain verbs

Numbers, counters, date and time measurement

JLPT Exam Dates : First Sunday of July and December, every year.

Total Score : 180 (Reading : 120, Listening : 60)
