Welcome to the first Murrayland’s Jobs Showcase, bringing employees and employers together and positioning the region for now and the future. With the Murraylands experiencing solid economic growth it is essential that local people understand the career opportunities available and have the skills and experience necessary to take on existing and emerging roles.

The food industry is the largest employer and our 10 biggest food companies have a combined sales revenue of $1.5 billion. Manufacturing is another key industry while transport, logistics, services and tourism are also forecasting strong growth opportunities.

We want to get the message out there that there are a range of jobs available – both skilled and unskilled – for people of all backgrounds and ages.

The Jobs Showcase specifically targeted school leavers and unemployed people as well as people looking to re-join the workforce after a break or top up their working hours. The Jobs Showcase has been designed to help job seekers engage in employment opportunities, find out what jobs and services are available in the region and receive career advice.

Employability Skills

Employability skills are general skills that are needed to get most jobs, but they also help you to stay in a job and work your way to the top.

While there will always be some job-specific skills that an employer is looking for, most employers will also want you to have some general skills. Chances are you’ll be asked questions about both job-specific skills and general employability skills in a job interview.

The Federal Government has done some work with research and consulting groups to develop a list of general employability skills that are recognised by education and training providers and in the workforce.

There are eight skills that employers want you to have whatever industry you’re work-ing in.

Employers hire on attitude over skillsEmployers prioritise job applicants with the right attitude to work rather than the skills listed on their CVs, new research shows.

Recruitment group Reed polled over 1,000 business owners to see what key traits employers look for in job seekers. It discovered that 96% of employers would hire someone who did not have a complete set of skills but displayed the right attitude over an applicant with the perfect skills but who lacked the right mindset.

Two thirds of employers said they if had to reduce their workforce they would fire someone with a perfect skills set over someone with deficient skills but sporting the right attitude.

The employers ranked the top six “essential” attitude qualities as “commit-ment, honesty, trustworthiness, adaptability, accountability, and loyalty.”

So the saying “Attitude is everything” is true in the workplace. If you have a positive attitude you will be more valuable to your employer, more productive, get along better with other team members, be confident in your ability to add value and contribute to the organisation.
