awardsfor community service.

The bank’s mission and principles

have not waveredsince its founding:

ProvidingTaos Countywith access to

financial services in order to make our

communitya betterplace to live,work

and raise a family. CentinelBank CEO

andChairmanRebeca RomeroRainey,

echoed that sentimentin a recent short

documentaryfilm featuring Centinel

Bank: “It’s not just whathappens here

in the bank. The successof ourorga-

nization dependson the success of our

community.”

As CentinelBank celebratesits anni-

versary, it is also celebratinga unique

honor for Rebeca RomeroRainey.

Thismonth she takes overas chair-

man of theIndependent Community

Bankersof America(ICBA), one of

the nation’s largest tradeand advocacy

organizations,representingmore than

6,400 communitybanks aroundthe

country. She will be the nation’slead

volunteer advocate forcommunity

banks— differentiating them from

Wall Streetand the indiscretions of the

“too big to fail” institutions, promot-

ing theability of hometown banks,

like Centinel Bank, to understandand

address the uniqueneedsof their com-

munity.

RomeroRainey, who has worked at

Centinel Bank for more than 25 years,

has been president of the Independent

CommunityBankers of New Mexico,a

member of theadvisory council for the

FDIC, a memberof theadvisory com-

mission for theFederal Reserve and

an inviteeto the WhiteHouse tomeet

directlywith PresidentBarack Obama

towork on banking industry issues.

She is a graduate of TaosHigh School

andWellesleyCollege, and returned

home to follow in the footstepsof

her father,Martin, and grandfather,

Eliu, in leadingthe bank. She was the

nation’s youngestbank president and

CEO when she accepted the position

with CentinelBank in 1999, andwill

become ICBA’syoungest chairman,

third femalechairman and first minor-

zation’s 85-yearhistory.

Theperformance of Centinel Bank,the

stability, the awards, andthe focus and

of the banking industryall over the na-

“We’vegottiresthat arerun-

That’s probably an under-

HolyCross showthat the hos-

The disciplinary cases

Thehead ofthe town’splan-

The town government is

pushingap lanto rezoneabout

20 acres in the area between

Los Pandos Road and Quesnel

Street,just southof the histor-

ic district. The town says it is

not askingfor the rezoningon

behalf of any specific devel-

opers, and it is hoping to spur

economic development in the

“gatewaytodowntown.”

But town emails obtained

through a request for pub-

lic recordsshow officials were

meetingwith JohnMahoney,an

Albuquerquereal estate devel-

oper, about theSmith’s project

for morethan a y ea r,andthere

was talk of submittinga build-

An informational forum will

be held Thursday (March 3),

Meetings between a poten-

planning department are not

unusual. Developers — espe-

of approvals — often discuss

preliminary plans with local

governmentsto find out what

In the superintendent’s

chair of the Taos Municipal

School District is Dr. Lillian

in Questa is Valerie Trujillo, a

Wyoming with deep roots in

Peñasco.The public schoolsin Taos

County are led by a team of

women from New Mexico.

In the 21st century, this fact

alonemightnot seem likea big

inequalities faced by women,

especially Latinas, in educa-

tionalleadershipnationwide.

United by a shared under-

“You’d think the gender

inequalities would have gone

away, but they really haven’t.

The majority of our supers in

New Mexico are men,” says

Trujillo, the youngest of the

three and a former principal

of Questa Junior/Senior High

School.The predominance of male

superintendentsis a systemic

inequalitythat runsall theway

up the education leadership

ladder.Women account for the

majority of teachers, yet they

make up only one-quarter of

superintendents across the

United States’ 14,000 school

districts. And though Latinos

make up the United States’

most quickly increasing

minority group, they account

forabout 2 p erce ntof superin-

tendents.Latina superintendents are

evenmore underrepresented.

According to Veronica

Rivera, executive direc-

tor of the Association of

Latino Administrators and

Superintendents (ALAS), inter-

nal surveys and preliminary

datasuggest Latinasmay make

historically troubled schools,

Torrez, Ulibarri and Trujillo
