    ThistutorialwillexplainamethodforsolvingRubik'sCubeblindfolded.Themethoddescribedinthispageisnotinventedbyme,itwasinventedbyStefanPochmann.EventhoughStefanhashisownpagethatexplainshis(old)blindfoldmethod(youcanfindithere),Ihadalotofpeopleaskingmequestionsaboutthismethod,andrequeststowritemyowntutorialforit.So,hereitis!Ihopethatthismakessense.Ifyouwanttousethistutorial,youhavealotofreadingtodo.ButIcanasureyouthatonceyoucansolvetheCubewithyoureyesclosed,youwillknowthatiswaswellworhit).

    Themethoddescribedinthispageisdesignedtobeusedforwhenthetimeofmemorisation/inspection/planning+solvingcounts.Itcanbeusedforothertypesofblindfoldcubing,whereonlythesolvingtimecounts,butmostpeoplewoulduseadifferentapproachinthatcase.

    Ifyouwanttousethistutorial,youshouldbeaprettyadvancedcuber,I'dsay.Youareexpectedtoknowthebasiccubinglingo,andyouareexpectedtobeabletoperformsomealgorithms(especiallyTandJpermutations)withreasonablespeedandfluency...andwithoutlooking,ofcourse!Ialsohiglyrecommendsomeknowlegdeaboutcommutators.Thismethodisnotdirectlybasedoncommutators,butsomeknowlegdeaboutcyclescouldcomeinhandyhere.

    Tips

    Practiceallthealgorithmsyouwilluseblindfoldedwithyoueyescloseduntilyoucandothemwithoutthinkingexecutingthealgorithmsfluentlywithoutlookingshouldnotbeaproblem.Breakupthesolvesintostepsatfirstmemorizeafewpieces,closeyoureyesandsolvethem.Thenmoveontothenextfewpieces.Solveawholecube(oronlythecornersoredges)blindfoldedbyusingapieceofpapertowritedownthepiecesyouaregoingtosolveifyouwanttodoaseriousblindfoldsolve,usingapencilandpaperischeating.Ifyouwanttolearnblindfoldcubing,it'sausefultooltohelpyou.Doingthiswillallowyoutopracticeusingthecorrectsetupmoves.Readthistutorialwithacubeinyourhands.Trytodoalltheexamplesyourself,andlookwhatishappeningtothepieces.Thiswillslowlymakeyouunderstandhowthemethodworks.

    IstartedblindfoldcubingusingRichardCarr'sBlindfoldcubingdocument.Richardfirstorientsallthepieces,andthenhepermutesthem.Thereisawaytodefineorientationofbothcornersandedges,evenifthepiecesarenotintheircorrectpositions(Iwillnotexplainthishere).Byfirstsolvingtheorientation,youcanforgetaboutitduringthepermutationphaseyouonlyhavetoobeysome'rules'thatwillpreservetheorientation.RichardCarrhadasomewhatcomplexwayofdealingwithpermutation:Allofthepieceswhereassignedanumber.Forexample:1=UFR,2=UFL,3=UBL,4=UBR,etc.Onascrambledcube,hewouldlookatposition1,andrememberwherethatpiecesneedstogo.Then,he'dlookatposition2,andrememberwherethatpieceneedstogo.Forthecorners,youwouldendupwith8digits,like81256734.Thepermutationofthecornersis'coded'inthose8digits.Memorisingthepermutationthiswayis,inmyopinion,notvery

    Afterawhileofusingthismethod,Ifoundabetterwaytodealwiththepermutation.Usuallypeoplewillcallthisthe'cycle'method.Alotofcubersusethis.First,youorientallthepieces.Then,thepermutationsarememorizedinadifferentway.Youcanlookatposition1,andrememberwherethatpieceneedstogo.Let'ssaythispiecehastogotoposition5.Now,youposition2,butyouhavetolookatposition5,andseewherethatpiecehastogo.Youwillhavetorepeatthisuntilyoucomebacktoposition1.Now,youfoundastringofnumbers,forexample(1578),whichmeans:

    Afterabout2yearswithoutblindfoldcubingverymuch(basicallyIonlydiditatcompetitions,andIwasveryslow),Ifoundacompletelydifferentmethod.It'saveryclevermethod.Itmightnotbethefastestmethod,butitisverysimpleandeffective...Idon'tthinkthismethodinit's'pureform'willbethefastestblindfoldmethod,butIthinkthebasicideathismethodisusingisverypromising.Ithereforethinkit'saverygoodmethodtostartwithforabeginnerinblindfoldcubing.

    Withthismethod,youwillsolveindividualstickers,ratherthanpieces!Thisistheessentialdifferencebetweenthe'traditional'methodsIdescribed,andthismethod.

    Nowwewanttofigureoutwhatoursecondtargetwillbe,withoutactuallysolvingthefirsttarget(wewanttomemorisethewholecyclebeforesolvingitblindfolded).AfterswappingULwithUR,wecanseethatthenewstickeratURwillbegreen.Therefore,oursecondtargetwillbesomewhereontheLface.WecanalsoseethatthenewstickeratRUwillbered,whichcorrespondstotheBface.SoouroursecondtargetisLB.
