ART NEWS by Mrs Helen Maclean

Students have started the year in full creative force, producing many wonderful artworks. I am very much looking forward to seeing the students hard work on display throughout April. From the Acting Principals’ Desk!

Dear Parents and Families Our thoughts and prayers are with our teacher librarian, Mrs Margaret Bowman and her family at this time. Margaret’s mother passed away last week and we offer her our deepest sympathy at this time. Mrs Andrea Benecke will be taking up a full time administration role at the high school next term. Andrea has been with St Joseph’s for the past six years and will be sadly missed in her role as OHS officer, administration officer on Fridays in the front office and a valuable member of our staff. Andrea will remain in her roles as term two begins, until her position is filled. We wish Andrea all the best in her future endeavours and thank her for her dedication over her time with us. Thank you to the staff and students for their great efforts in preparing for the Stations of the Cross today. It was lovely to see so many parents and families joining us to embrace this important time in our faith and practise as Christians. Let us not forget that Jesus was a man, God made flesh on this earth. A carpenter, a son, a friend. The sacrifice he made for us is beyond words, the pain unimaginable, and the grief unbearable. May we remember it, for what it was and is: the single most loving gift we shall ever receive. I have enjoyed the past two weeks in the office as acting Principal and thank staff, students and parents for their support. Aaron will be back in the hot seat at the beginning of Term 2! Enjoy a safe, happy and holy Easter! God Bless, Deonne Crowe Assistant Principal

I asked Jesus…

I asked Jesus,

‘How much do you love me?’

‘This much,’ he answered,

From the A.P.R.E

The Carpenter's Cloth Then Simon Peter, who was behind him, arrived and went into the tomb. He saw the strips of linen lying there, as well as the burial cloth that had been around Jesus' head. The cloth was folded up by itself, separate from the linen. JOHN 20:6, 7

DURING JESUS' TIME THERE WAS ONE WAY A CARPENTER let the contractor know a job was finished. A signature, so to speak. Imagine a hot afternoon in Galilee. Jesus has completed the final pieces of a job he has worked on for several days. The hair of his strong forearms is matted with sawdust and sweat. His face is shiny with heat. He takes a final—and welcome—drink of cool water from a leather bag. Then standing to the side of his work, he pours water over his face and chest, splashing it over his arms to clean himself before his journey home. With a nearby towel, he pats his face and arms dry. Finally, Jesus folds the towel neatly in half, and then folds it in half again. He sets it on the finished work and walks away. Later, whoever arrives to inspect the work will see the towel and understand its simple message. The work is finished. Christ's disciples, of course, knew this carpenter's tradition. On a Sunday of sorrow, three years after Jesus had set aside his carpenter tools, Peter will crouch to look into an empty tomb and see only the linens that the risen Lord has left behind. A smile will cross Peter's face as his sorrow is replaced by hope, for he will see the wrap that had covered Jesus' face. It has been folded in half, then folded in half again and left neatly on the floor of the tomb. Peter understands. The carpenter has left behind a simple message. It is finished. Sports News from Mrs Hart

I have allocated school sports house teams to the new students and preps for 2015. Leichhardt our blue team and Warrego our yellow team. In their kit books today they will receive the notification which will be highlighted either blue or yellow depending on their sporting house. Congratulations to those students who trialled last Friday, 27th March for District Soccer. Competition was strong with a large number of Boys and Girls trialling for positions in the District Team. I would like to congratulate the following students on their successful inclusion in the Chinchilla & District Soccer Teams: Girls - Lucy McLatchey and Rachel McLatchey. Boys - Cameron Cardillo, Lachlan Smith, Joven Raguse, Keegan Sutcliffe, Jack Stackman and Andrew Welke. These students will compete at the SW Soccer Trials to be held on Friday 2nd May in Chinchilla. ***The Boys will Trial at Bulldog Park, while the Girls Trials will be held at the Recreation Grounds. CROSS COUNTRY Over the past few weeks I have been so impressed with some excellent personal improvements during students Cross Country preparations. Students continue to develop their fitness levels and I hope students are able to continue to build on their fitness over the Easter break. St Joey's Annual Cross Country will be held in Week 2 of Term 2, on Wednesday 29th April. Parents, grandparents and family friends are most welcome to attend this event. A Program of Events outlining the details of the Cross Country will be included in the Newsletter in Week 1 of next term. HAVE A HAPPY, SAFE & HEALTHY HOLIDAY…..next term is looking very busy on our Sporting Calendar.

Exhibition Opening On Monday night, 30th March, the official opening of the ‘ANZAC – Pictures and stories’ exhibition took place at the White Gums Gallery. St Joseph’s was well represented, with many families and students attending. The choir’s montage of wartime songs was a big hit, with many people commenting on how wonderfully the children sang and presented themselves! Well done to the students involved and to Mrs Llewellyn and Mrs Nitz who have coordinated weekly practises over the term. Many of our St Joseph’s students also received awards on the night for their artwork submitted into the competition. Congratulations to the recipients and well done everyone who entered! The display is a credit to the organisers, and the classes visiting on Thursday with Mrs Maclean will gain a lot from the experience. Due to the volume of entries from district schools, the students’ artwork is on display in the foyer of the cultural centre as well. Be sure to make a visit to view the artwork, high on your ‘to do’ list over the holiday break! Year Five Curriculum Corner What a great Term we have had in Year Five! It is hard to believe that it is already coming to an end but I would like to share with you what we have been focussing on in the classroom during Term One. In English, the students have been working to improve their reading and comprehension skills as well as building on their knowledge of different spelling rules. The main focus has been on persuasive texts and the students have enjoyed choosing a position and writing to persuade. They are currently refining persuasive letters to Mr Wells with the aim to persuade him to change something at school. I wonder if he will be successfully persuaded by any of the Year Five students? Maths this Term has seen the students looking at and working with six-digit numbers, different multiplication strategies, elapsed time, decimal fractions and presenting and interpreting data. In Religion, we looked very closely at the psalms. The students were required to rewrite a psalm for a more contemporary audience and then reflect on whether they think the bible is still a relevant text today. We have been finishing this Term by preparing ourselves for Holy Week and Easter. In Geography, the students have been looking at the countries in both Europe and North America and have been investigating the effects that the human and environmental characteristics of these places have on each other. They have especially en-joyed researching The Dust Bowl in the Southern Plains of the United States, acid rain in Europe, how rivers are altered in England and urbanisation in Mexico. Science this Term has been all about light. The students have investigated what things give us light, how light helps us to see, how light travels and how far it travels, as well as what a shadow is. The students have also been enjoying their lessons in Physical Education with Mrs Hart, Library with Mrs Bowman and Visual Art with Mrs Maclean. I wish everyone a safe and restful holiday,

WELCOME TO YEAR SIX! Year Six have been very busy finishing their final assessment pieces as well as formalised testing. I’m very pleased with the effort and enthusiasm that the students have shown this term. Religion In Religion the students have worked towards an understanding of ‘Acting Justly’ and caring for others, in particular the poor and marginalised. Science Our Earthquakes unit has provided opportunities for students to develop an understanding of the causes of Earthquakes and how they change the Earth’s surface.

Geography For Geography, the students have been investigating Global Diversity. In particular, how are Asian cultures similar and different from Australia?

Yoga with Prep/1 Year 6 was very fortunate to be invited by Miss Rookas and Prep/1 to participate in

a yoga session with them recently. The Prep/1’s demonstrated the different yoga positions for the Year 6 class. The Year 6’s joined in with the younger (and very flexible!) younger students. We look forward to more visits in the future! I would like to wish everyone a happy, safe and holy Easter!

Supporting Our Students by Michelle Nitz, Learning Support Teacher

At Joey’s we are fortunate to have a Learning Support Teacher for 3 days a week. On Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays I support children across all year levels, and work together with the class teachers, to ensure the best learning for our students. In my role I can work in the classroom assisting in literacy and numeracy lessons or alternatively work with small groups or individual students on specific programs. As you can imagine my day is never boring and ensures I have contact with many of our Joey’s students. At the start of each term, I collaboratively plan with classroom teachers, helping them to write plans to adjust or modify content to cater for the individual needs of each student. I can also administer screening or assessments to help find out as much information as we can about the student. I am incredibly lucky to have four School Officers who help implement our programs in the Learning Support Area, Mrs Wendy Ferguson, Miss Katie Walsh, Mrs Leeola Schaefer and Mrs Margie Lees. This energetic team works supporting our English as a Second Language students, Indigenous students and students who have a diagnosed disability. We also have general aide hours which are shared amongst our early years classes. Our School Officers help to implement the Support a Reader Program, Speech and Language programs, Fine and Gross Motor programs and assist in classroom life. Earlier this morning our School Officers met for a training session in a new dyslexia program that the school has purchased. We are constantly learning and sharing our best practice! With the Easter holidays nearly here, it may be a good time to make appointments for your children to have their vision and hearing tested. If a child is referred to me for consideration, I will ask class teachers to check with parents to see if these two checks have been conducted to rule out any issues. For those children who are prescribed glasses, it may be timely for a check up too! With any long break from school, it is important to consolidate our skills and strategies every day. If we can ask our children to read aloud (only for 15 minutes a day), we are helping our children to become successful readers. I hope everyone has a fantastic holiday! Looking forward to supporting our Joey’s again next term.

School Banking

Due to Good Friday—school banking will be done on Thursday this week

Exciting new competition starting next term for St Joey’s students only. Make 5 deposits in term 2 and go into the draw to win a prize pack - one for the senior school and one for the junior school.

School Fees It is important that each family pays fees that are due, as school fees represent a vital part of funding of Catholic Education here at St Joseph’s. If you are experiencing some financial difficulty, it is very important to arrange an interview with us as soon as possible so that we can discuss your account. We have a commitment to supporting our families, however we do need to be able to budget our anticipated income.

Mini Vinnies Term One Report

This term in Mini Vinnies we have been very busy with our fun activities. We had Watermelon Day in week 3 to celebrate the annual Chinchilla

Watermelon Festival. We sold watermelon slices and painted faces. In total we raised $216.00 from this event.

On March 17 Mini Vinnies volunteered to help with face painting at the Parish St Patricks Day celebration.

In week 9 we held a pizza and popper day. We raised $373.10 which will contribute to the ‘Good Works’ of Mini Vinnies.

In our final meeting we discussed the devastating Cyclone Pam which hit Vanuatu and caused a lot of destruction.

We decided to donate $500 to the Caritas Pacific Regions Project which will aid the people of Vanuatu in their clean up and rebuilding.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Mini Vinnies.

We could not have raised the money we have without your support!!
