Dear Parents,

Throughout my relatively short time at St Joey’s, I have been delighted by the strong support shown by our parents. Our community thrives because all that we undertake is based on a firm home-school relationship. Clear communication is essential for the smooth running of any institution. It is an essential component of a happy and successful school. I encourage all parents to seek clarification should problems arise. Organise an appointment to see me, give me a call, speak to me on the playground or as an alternative speak to Miss Katie Hede our APRE. It is important to gain accurate information. My staff and I are always happy to clarify any matters which may arise. Be a proactive and positive force in the school. A mutually supportive relationship will allow your children to excel at home, at school and in the wider community.

St Joseph’s Primary School 2 Week 5

From the A.P.R.E

This week students in our school in grades 3, 5 and 7 participate in three days of NAPLAN testing. At times like these it is important for both parents and teachers alike to take a step back and allow the children in our care to enter into these situations with clear and confident mindsets and with their motivations to do well coming from wanting to try their best rather than being dominated by fear of not performing for others. By this stage we have prepared our students in the best way we can. We have assisted them in drawing on specific strategies and sets of knowledge to complete these tasks successfully. At times when the preparation is over and the tests are completed we need to stop and consider the effect of our attitudes, words and actions – what messages are these sending our children about how we think of them as individuals? By creating an atmosphere of pressure stress for these students does it really allow them to achieve their best or does it override their ability to think with a clear mind and focus on their task at hand? As we consider these questions I would like everyone to take a moment to reflect on the following prayer and think about what our words and actions say to the children around us… Help me give my children the best…not of trappings or toys, but of myself, cherishing them on good days and bad, theirs and mine. Teach me to accept them for who they are, not for what they do; to listen to what they say, if only so they will listen to me; to encourage their goals, not mine; and please, let me laugh with them and be silly. Let me give them a home where respect is the corner-stone, integrity the foundation and there is enough happiness to raise the roof. May I give them the courage to be true to themselves; the independence to take care of themselves and the faith to believe in a power much greater than their own. See that I discipline my children without demeaning them, demand good manners without forgetting my own and let them know they have limitless love, no matter what they do. Let me feed them properly, clothe them adequately and have enough to give them small allowances…not for the work they do but the pleasure they bring…and let me be moderate in all these things, so the joy of getting will help them discover the joy of giving. See that their responsibilities are real but not burdensome, that my expectations are high but not overwhelming and that my thanks and praise are thoughtful and given when they’re due. Help me teach them that excellence is works’ real reward and not the glory it brings. But when it comes…and it will…let me revel in each honour, however small, without once pretending that it’s mine; my children are glories enough. Above all, let me ground these children so well that I can dare to let them go. And may they be so blessed, Amen God Bless, Katie Hede APRE

Why Is It So? - FYI Cards

These information sheets are used to improve the communication between home and school. Two types of information are targeted:

Behaviour First aid

Often it is difficult to write every piece of information down in a KIT book with limited time due to class commitments. The FYI card enables a tick and flick option for teachers to get the basic message home regarding the behaviour or first aid. The FYI card is used for minor cases to share

information, if the nature of the incident requires more discussion it will be indicated on the form or the teacher will contact you.

It is difficult, but we need to use this shared information (especially about off task behaviour) to improve the learning capacity of our children. The information is not provided to alarm you but to give you a brief but accurate record of what went on during the day. As always the most important part of communication is to contact in person if in doubt.

A Word from Sr. Marion….

CONFIRMATION AND FIRST EUCHARIST. A question I ask myself is, "What difference does it make that I am a baptised, confirmed Catholic?" Then I think back to the early days of the church, and see the frightened apostles huddled in the room where they are waiting and hoping for the coming of the Holy Spirit, as promised by Jesus. When they heard the strong wind, and saw the flames of fire, and realised that the Spirit of Jesus had indeed come, they went out in public, and proclaimed to everyone who would listen, that Jesus is the Lord, and he is risen to new life! So I too, and you, can call on the gifts of wisdom, understanding, right judgment, knowledge, courage, reverence, wonder and awe. What else do I need? Sr Marion MASS this weekend is on Friday at 5.30 p.m.

Woolworths - Earn & Learn

Help support the school through the Woolworths Earn and Learn Program.

Simply start collecting stickers at the checkout at Woolworths to place on your child’s sticker card. There’ll be one sticker for every $10 spent. Once

the card is full simply drop the card into the collection box in the office and collect another card. Each sticker collected equates to points that can be traded for classroom resources.

So let’s see how many stickers we can collect!!!!!!!!!!

DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY The Chinchilla & District Cross Country was held last Friday 10th May at the Chinchilla Recreation Grounds. St Joey's had 37 competitors on the day and almost half of these students have qualified to attend the Regional Carnival to be held in Wandoan on Friday 7th June. All stu-dents must be commended on their dedication and sportsmanship throughout the day. There were some outstanding personal achieve-ments and all students should be very proud of their performances. Our most outstanding achievements on the day were Patterson Bannister winning the 10 years Boys 2km event and Thomas Bannister winning the 13 years Boys 3km event. Gabby Geldard, Jack McLatchey and Breanna Sainsbury ran excellent races coming in 2nd place in their respective age groups and Will Playsted, Louise Merritt and Penny Crothers took out 3rd placings in their events. Other students to be congratulated are Blake Moore; Joven Raguse; Reece Mitchell; Brandon Paerau; Shannon Bender; Clancy Playsted; Ronac Tom; Danielle Olsen and Riley Flynn who also performed admirably. Congratulations to all these students and good luck in your up and coming Regional event. The Regional Cross Country invitations will be sent home with students today. Year 2 Hello everyone from the hive of the year 2 busy bees. We have a lot to report on since our last update in term 1.

Firstly, we have said a sad goodbye to one of our little classmates Holly McQuaid as she moved to Dalby. We had another sad

goodbye to our lovely and extremely helpful prac student, Mrs Dolbel. We wish her all the best with the remainder of her study,

and are waiting to hear of the safe arrival of her second child later this year.

At the end of last term, students enjoyed designing and creating their own ‘Resurrection Eggs;’ incorporating materials and

symbols that remind us of the Easter story. Late last term we also enjoyed an excursion to the Chinchilla Museum as part of our

History unit. Students loved looking and using some of the old equipment. Some deep thinking was used when comparing and

making connections between the equipment used today.

More recently in year 2, we have been busily preparing for our Mother’s Day Liturgy and Café

which was held last Friday. We made cheesecakes, menus, cards and lovely bath salts for

our Mums. As part of our literacy focus, students also wrote beautiful descriptions about

their Mums, which were read and presented at our Liturgy. A lovely time was had by all!

This week we have welcomed yet another prac student to our room. Mrs Kerri Dowden comes

to St Joey’s for her third year practicum from Tara. Mrs Dowden will be helping in year 2 for the

next three weeks, so please make her feel welcome.

Well, back to the hive for some more laughter and learning this

term. Michelle & Pam
