Schedule for This Week

Pastor’s Letter

Happy Easter! May Easter 2016 be a time when we say, “Yes,” to new life immersed in our Lord Jesus.

Thank you to Fr. Bob Borer and Msgr. Mark Froehlich for assisting with this year’s Easter Masses, enabling us to offer these four Masses on Easter Sunday in addition to the Easter Vigil.

At his Wednesday Audience this week on March 23rd, Pope Francis spoke about the meaning of this year’s celebration of Holy Week, leading to Easter Sunday. “Dear Brothers and Sisters: As we prepare to celebrate the Paschal Triduum in this Holy Year of Mercy, we are invited in a special way to contemplate the revelation of God’s infinite mercy in the events of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection. Tomorrow, Holy Thursday, Jesus gives himself to us as food and, in the washing of feet, teaches us the need to serve others. On Good Friday, in the mystery of Christ’s death on the cross, we contemplate that undying divine love which embraces all mankind and summons us in turn to love one another in the power of the Spirit. Holy Saturday, the day of God’s silence, invites us not only to solidarity with all who are abandoned and alone, but also to trust in that faithful love which turns death into life. These, then, are days [that] speak to us powerfully of God’s love and mercy. ”

One of the keystones of our observance of this Year of Mercy as a parish is the professional drama planned for Friday, April 15th, at 7:00 p.m. in our St. Benedict Athletic & Events Center (i.e. our gym!). We are hosting a drama by St. Luke Productions entitled, Faustina: Messenger of Divine Mercy. You can see a trailer for this drama at our parish website: www.christourlightparish.com. We are promoting this drama both throughout the Diocese of Steubenville and in Zanesville and Dover/New Philadelphia as well.

Another Year of Mercy event is the Divine Mercy Sunday devotions planned for next Sunday afternoon, April 3rd, starting at 2:30 p.m. until ~ 4:00 p.m. at St. Benedict Church, followed by food and fellowship in the social hall. The devotions will include a procession, praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet, readings from St. Faustina’s diary, confessions and Benediction. All are welcome!

May the Lord help us to continue journeying together ever more joyfully, especially throughout this Easter Season 2016, always ready for the gift of eternal life.

Liturgical Assignments for the next 12 weeks will be scheduled this week. Ministers of Communion, Lectors, Altar Servers and Ushers are asked to call the parish office at 740-432-7609 if they are aware of a weekend they will not be available to serve, have changed a phone number, or wish to change which Mass time they serve.

In the gospel, Jesus appears to his apostles and offers them the gift of his everlasting peace. As Christians, we are called to bring God’s gift of peace to all people. As we gather to celebrate the Easter mysteries, let us resolve to be of one heart and mind with Christ.

Both the reading from Acts and the Gospel passage focus on the presence of the Risen Lord. In the first reading, this presence is witnessed in the actions of the disciples; their life in “peace and unity,” their miracles and their belief in the Resurrection. This witness leads more men and women to believe.

Jesus’ first words to his disciples are of peace and forgive-ness. “Peace be with you...if you forgive the sins of anyone, they are forgiven.” Thomas represents those of us who find it hard to believe that Christ is truly present among us and that living in peace and unity is possible. To him, Jesus says,

READINGS FOR THE SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER (DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY)

April 3, 2016

“Don’t be unbelieving, but believe.” The evangelist tells us that he has written this for us, so that we will recognize the signs of the Risen Lord and believe.

Acts of the Apostles 5:12-16Many signs and wonders were done among the people.- When have you been aware of signs of God’s acting in your need?

Revelation 1:9-11, 12-13, 17-19I am the first and the last, the one who lives.- How do you witness to others the salvation we have in Jesus?

John 20:19-31As the Father has sent me, so I send you.- What is God asking of you at this stage of your life?

Throughout this week we observe what is called an “octave” for Easter. That means that to a certain extent each day this week is celebrated as if it were another Easter. For example, usually for daily Masses we don’t sing or recite the hymn of the Gloria. During the Octave of Easter, however, the Gloria is part of even daily Masses. The Mass readings, too, focus on the events around the Resurrection.

The Second Sunday of Easter is also called Divine Mercy Sunday. On this Sunday we go back to the Upper Room with the apostles to where Jesus had eaten the Passover Meal as the Last Supper. They were hunkered down fear-fully hoping that what had happened to Jesus would not happen to them. The door was closed securely with a huge wooden plank across the door.

In spite of this, Jesus passed through that door and appeared to them. This moment is depicted in the Divine Mercy images that are central to this devotion. In those images, Jesus is depicted as just having passed through the door with streams of light flowing out of the wound in his side that had been inflicted on him after his death by one of the soldiers standing nearby.

As Jesus greeted his surprised disciples he said, “Peace be with you!” St. John, in his Gospel, emphasizes that after Jesus showed them his hands, still with the nail marks, and his side he gave them a command to go and forgive people’s sins. He gave them the authority to do so in his name. This moment, therefore, was one of peace to calm our fears about death and one of mercy to help us hear God’s words

of forgiveness through human instruments. So, this Second Sunday of Easter is fittingly called Divine Mercy Sunday.

A religious sister in Poland, St. Faustina Kowalska, in the 1930s received inspirations regarding the development of this devotion to God’s mercy. This devotion had a positive impact on St. John Paul II and he promoted it enthusiastically as a bishop and as pope. There is a form of prayer associated with this devotion called the Divine Mercy Chaplet which is prayed utilizing Rosary beads. Many people have found it to be a good complement to praying the Rosary.

The other readings for next Sunday’s Mass also echo, at least indirectly, this theme of mercy. For both the First Reading and the Second Reading, we will be progressing through two books of the Bible throughout the Easter Season: Acts of the Apostles in the First Reading and the Book of Revelation in the Second Reading.

Regarding mercy, in the First Reading, from the Acts of the Apostles, we hear about the early Christian community living peacefully and in unity with the needs of all being met, which could be seen as fruits of living as a community of mercy. The Second Reading proclaims the experience of Christians as being victors over sin and death through faith in Jesus. And, the Responsorial Psalm declares that God’s love is everlasting. In the Hebrew language, there is much overlap in the meaning of the words for love and for mercy. May we, like the earliest Christians as well as like our Jewish ancestors in the faith experience and become instruments of God’s abundant Divine Mercy!
