Symbols

• The new child Gabriel was a symbol of difference, because she was growing differently and acting differently than the rules she was scheduled to be released.

• The Sled was a symbol of the past, because it showed the receiver the differences of his present compared to the past.

• The River was a symbol of freedom because it was the only thing that could do whatever it wanted and it could not be controlled or forced to do anything. In the story a baby had ounce drowned in it and nothing had done to the river. Whereas if a person had killed the baby that person would be released.

Theme Slide

• Making Choices- is the theme of this book because it shows that with choice there is diversity. Without choices there is no freedom and almost every aspect of your life is in order.

Conflict

• Man vs. Self- Jonas wanted his friends to experience the pain of war when they were playing the war game on the unscheduled vacation. To show them it was not all fun and games.

• Man vs. Man or society- Jonas wanted the trend of one person, taking on all the memories of the society and let the society take the memories.

• Man vs. Nature- On the trip to the new place, at the last stage, it was very cold and jonas had to use all the bits of the memory warmth he had to finish the trip.

Conflict and Resolution

• The main conflict of the story is, Jonas did not want one person to carry all the memories of the society because it was to much for one. The resolution of this situation is that Jonas was given an sufficient amount of memories good and bad to take. So when he traveled farther away from the society, the memories would come back to the society.

Characters- The big picture ones!• Jonas- The protagonist of this story, is chosen to be

the new Receiver and with the help of the Giver figures out a way to stop the trend of one person receiving all the memories of the society.

• Gabriel- is the baby who is not growing and acting right according to the guidelines. What makes her important is that she is just like the Receiver with the pale eyes and she enters the world with choices with Jonas.

• The Giver- He is important not just because the book is titled after him! Duh! But because he and the Receiver, concocts a plan to make the society independent of Receivers and Givers. He also had to stay behind with the society to help them ease into the new life style after Jonas left.

Reflection

• After reading this book, I have learned that with choices comes disorder, but without there's order. Sadly, order is not always the glorious thing because it can be horrific from the way the book sets it up. I believe that I am safe to say this because “The Giver” was not one sided even thought it took a side at the end of the book. It also showed the boredom of life with order, the lack of knowledge, and the lack of true pain, and affections. Simple things that can make life fun like colors or snow, was stripped away from them. Either because it gave way for choices or it was deemed dangerous to life. In the book, on the unscheduled vacation or “off” the Receivers friend was playing a game of war. Since they had the lack of knowledge of war, they played it unlike Jonas who hurt from seeing them play it. In the book, it also pointed out a very scary detail, no one had fun or loved anything. Everyone were like a shell inside a shell and that just said things that they did not truly mean. They were not allowed to have sterling's which, stripped them of one kind of affection and the other facts such as the rules of not being rude or the natural soundings disablement of colors took there personality. This mean that they were zombies, with a limited amount of knowledge which was “make believe” compared to the ones the Receiver had.
