Leadership Statement: Dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources – Texas Tech University

Facilitating a collaborative leadership environment – Collaborative leadership is essential to

advance the mission, vision, and goals at all levels. Trust, transparency and respect are key

operative elements of a College possessing a forward-thinking and growth mindset. The Dean must

have a competent and trusted leadership team, and respect their collective and individual abilities to

perform their jobs and make decisions, without micromanaging their activities. Simultaneously, the

Dean and members of his/her leadership teams must trust one another so that honest opinions,

information, and constructive feedback and suggestions may be discussed and exchanged. A caveat

to this free exchange is that all members of the team must recognize that collaborative leadership

and shared vision does not always equate to everyone getting their way; the Dean is ultimately

responsible for setting priorities to advance the mission and goals of the College. The role of the

Dean is both inwardly and outwardly facing and requires a highly competent and motivated

leadership team. With the right members of the team, the attitude and practice of collaboration for

advancement of common goals is extended vertically and horizontally, i.e., between the unit heads

and their faculty, among the leadership team, and among the faculty and staff. A similar attitude of

cooperation and collaboration is necessary between the Dean, and other upper administrators. This

can be challenging, especially when resources are limited and there is a competition for these

resources. As I have functioned as Head of Animal and Rangeland Sciences at Oregon State

University, I have made it a practice to do all I can to advance my Department and its proposals on

their own merits, without attempting to undermine or otherwise thwart the efforts of my colleagues,

and to always keep in mind the greater mission of the College and University. I seek opportunities

to collaborate whenever possible to ideally create synergy across multiple disciplines/units. I would

expect such attitudes of cooperation and collaboration from all members of my leadership team and

College colleagues as we address the greater missions of Agricultural Sciences and Natural

Resources in the College and those of the University.

2. Teaching Activities Report and Self-Review

A successful teacher is not only a source of information and knowledge in a particular

subject area, but should function as a facilitator to help create an environment that is conducive to learning, challenges the student, and promotes the development of the individual. In doing so, the teacher will hopefully transfer knowledge, an enthusiasm for life-long learning, the ability to think critically, and promote diversity. As a teacher we are not only role models as professionals in our chosen careers for all of our students, but for a select few that have “chosen us”, we become privileged to be their mentors. Along with the many challenges and responsibilities placed upon the teacher, there are immeasurable rewards that come with seeing our students succeed as both professionals and individuals. ________________________________________________________________________________________

Service (Public, Professional/Disciplinary, and University) Statement of Extension Programming Goals and Accomplishments In addition to having a formal Extension faculty appointment, I am responsible for numerous Extension faculty within my department and I feel that outreach is a vital role of a faculty member in a land-grant institution. Through interactions with our clientele and partners, we are able to better address problems that are relevant to current industries, gain insight into future industry trends, and to better understand how the basic knowledge that we develop in our laboratories can be applied and disseminated. I have found, through working with our various clientele, that they can be a vast resource of information, ideas and occasionally research support. Additionally, I believe that interaction with our partners allows us to improve our ability to teach. Not only must we develop and use different approaches when delivering information that are appropriate to the various audiences, we gain new perspectives as to currently relevant issues that we can then present in the classroom. I feel that Extension will be a critical vehicle for us, as an institution, to be preeminent in both basic research and translational science. A. Summary of Service 1. Public Service

Research

A. Statement of Research Goals and Accomplishments

Demands on animal efficiency and product quality are continually increasing. Understanding the cellular mechanisms controlling these characteristics is the focus of our laboratory. Research in our laboratory is concerned with the study of regulators of growth and in particular, with those factors influencing muscle development and meat quality. We use contemporary molecular genetic and biochemical techniques to investigate gene expression from embryonic development through maturity and the effects of modifications in expression patterns on growth efficiency and product quality. Research in the laboratory involves applications in molecular biology, cell culture, live animal trials and evaluation of postmortem product quality. We have used genetic mapping efforts to identify genes associated with economically important quantitative traits. Our laboratory has investigated the effects of the administration of growth factors during early embryonic development on myogenic gene expression, differentiation and development of muscle cells, and the impact of embryonic manipulation on postnatal growth efficiency, muscling and meat quality. We examine the interaction of genetics with nutritional and environmental factors and their effects on animal physiology. The overall goal of the laboratory is to develop a better understanding of the mechanisms regulating muscle growth and physiology at both the embryonic and postnatal stages of development, to assess the impact of these processes on muscle function, and ultimately to apply this knowledge to develop higher quality production animals and meat products. Support for my research programs has come from both federal and industry sources. Total career support from external sources exceeds $6.3 million.
