FROM OUR PASTOR

Page 4 - 171

“Racial hatred has no place in our world, including here in the United States, or in the hearts of peo-ple. Every life is a precious gift from God. Racism is a mortal sin and an attack on that gift. All of us share a responsibility to bring an end to this evil and to do so in a way that seeks justice and peace. The perpetual cycle of pain and anguish must end.” These words are taken from the statement of Archbishop Perez regarding the death of George Floyd. In these times it is hard to express feelings in words and even more challenging to discern a re-sponse. The desire for justice, peace and unity are an integral part of our faith as disciples of Jesus Christ. A guide for us as we pray for an end of racial hatred is Saint Katharine Drexel. Our own Phila-delphia saint founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. Her desire was for the Native American and African American people to be included in the Eucharistic community of our Church. Sadly in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s they were being excluded. St. Katharine’s desire for all of God’s children to have the opportunity to know God’s justice and peace inspires our time. The prayer for her feast day encourages us each time we gather for Mass: “God of love, you called Saint Katharine Drexel to teach the message of the Gospel and to bring the life of the Eucharist to the Na-tive American and African American peoples; by her prayers and example, enable us to work for jus-tice among the poor and the oppressed, and keep us undivided in love in the Eucharistic community of your Church.” Resuming the celebration of public Mass is a joyful time for us. All those who are feeling well and comfortable to come together this weekend recognize that adjustments must be made in response to the pandemic. Mass in the coming months will be different from what we are accustomed to experi-encing. Please review the information provided in the bulletin and our website as we follow the guide-lines of the Archdiocese. The dispensation of the obligation to attend Mass on Sunday and Holy Days continues in effect and the 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM Masses will be live-streamed each Sunday. We will be sanitizing the church after each Mass. We keep our hearts and minds focused on Jesus as we come together for Mass or pray at home. Thanks for your patience and understanding as we implement the guidelines in resuming public Mass. I am grateful for our parish staff who have worked so hard throughout these weeks to keep our pa-rishioners connected to our parish. In Christ, Fr. Costa WEEKEND CONTRIBUTIONS Sunday Contributions for Weekend of: May 31, 2020 Weekend Contributions: $24,406.30 Includes online giving of: $14,707.80

FROM OUR ARCHBISHOP

Page 5 - 171

ARCHBISHOP PÉREZ CALLS CATHOLICS TO COME HOME On the first Pentecost, the Holy Spirit gave birth to the real presence of the Risen Lord in his Word, in the Sacraments, and in the mission of every Christian. Pentecost this year promises the same for us here in the Archdio-cese of Philadelphia. As we begin to move carefully out of the isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and once again safely assemble as the Church with our Risen Lord, we are called to be open to the same Holy Spirit who resides in the hearts of all who believe.

I am hopeful as we gradually return to our Catholic way of life, that we can do so as a stronger and more vibrant Catholic community. The first step is for me personally to tell you it is Time to Come Home. It echoes a call and invitation I made to all in the Philadelphia region on the day of my In-stallation as your new Archbishop. Come Home to listen to the Lord’s saving Word. Come Home to be with him at the altar for his redeeming Sacrifice. Come Home to see him in all who cross your paths. For some of you this coming home is as simple as taking your seat in your parish church. For others, who have been occasional in the practice of the faith, this coming home is a new commitment to be more faithful in following the Lord. For some others, who have become reac-quainted with the Church through virtual worship during the pandemic, this coming home may be a larger step and we are ready to welcome you. It is time for all to Come Home, renewed by the Holy Spirit!

I am very grateful to all of our priests who served so consistently during the weeks of the pandemic to shepherd their parishioners during such an unprecedented time in our lives. I am thankful to all of the faithful who held fast to living their faith in creative ways, especially without the possibility of par-ticipating in Mass. As we open our churches for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist and the Sacra-ments during the first weekend of June, I am filled with great joy and hope to see you, gathered once again around the altar. The Holy Spirit wants to breathe new life into all of us, his community of mis-sionary disciples. Let us respond together with a deeper faith and a joyful heart. Let us respond with a willingness to express this faith in our lives and to share it with those the Lord has placed around us. Be assured of my prayers for you as I rely on your prayers for me.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ZOOM PRESENTATION June 16 at 7:00pm In the current COVID-19 pandemic, the faithful have been turning to St. Padre Pio—one of the world’s most prayed to saints—for healing. But did you know that Padre Pio’s ministry was di-rectly connected to our last great worldwide pan-demic, the Spanish Flu? In honor of the anniver-sary of Padre Pio’s canonization on June 16, join West Chester University professor and anthro-pologist, Dr. Michael A. Di Giovine, for a dis-cussion on the connection between St. Pio’s stig-mata, the pressures of his early popularity, and the Spanish flu. He will also talk about St. Pio’s devotion to Our Lady of Fatima, to whom he turned when struck with illness. Dr.Di Giovine, a parishioner of SS Peter and Paul Parish who has conducted decades of research on the saint, will also pray with us for St. Pio’s blessing through one of his relics. To access the meeting go to zoom.us. After you do that, click “Join a Meeting”. The meeting ID and password are be-low.

CORPUS CHRISTI SUNDAY Next Sunday, June 14th, is the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Jesus, also known as Corpus Christi Sunday. This is the day when the Church celebrates the gift of the Eucharist in a special way. Traditionally the Feast of Corpus Christi is cele-brated with a Eucharistic Procession. We will have a Eucharistic Procession at 3:30pm on Sunday June 14th. Everyone is invited to participate! At 3:30pm, the procession will begin with expo-sition of the Blessed Sacrament in the main church and proceed outside of the church to the parking lot. Anyone who feels comfortable coming into church and joining the procession is welcome. If you are not yet able to return to Mass, we still invite you to participate in this proces-sion! Simply come to the St. Agnes parking lot at 3:30pm. You can stay in your car or step out of your car and remain next to it as the proces-sion passes by. This is a beautiful opportunity to come together as a parish (with social distance!) to adore and praise our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament and to witness to the power of the Eucharist in the surrounding community. We hope that you will prayerfully consider joining us for this special liturgical celebration!
