John Paul College welcomes the community to a presentation from

Lucy Hone PhD

Tuesday 18th September at 7pm Edmund Rice Centre Gold coin donation

“Resilience: how can we promote it in

ourselves and others?” Resilience is a frequently used, but in reality little understood term. Dr Lucy Hone has made it her mission over the last ten years to understand resilience – what it means, who has it, what enables it and prevents it. In this lively Keynote presentation, Dr Hone shares her extensive research on the topic, combing her academic knowledge with personal insights gleaned from living through the Christchurch earthquakes and personal loss. Lucy’s talk is inspirational, insightful and above all practical as she translates key research findings

for real world impact.

WINTEC COMPETITION

This year the following Year 11 students travelled to Hamilton for the Wintec Culinary Fare. The competition had over 300 entries, from Auckland, Hamilton, Taupo, Tauranga, Waihi and Te Awamutu. Sophie Huang, Madison Mitchell, Jasmine Hall, Briarly Dodunski, Brittany Pettit, Hannah Putt, Sophie McKenzie, Madison George, Kristina Light, Mikaela Van Der Heuvel, Tayla Malone, Hannah McLean and Sophie Smallbone.

We entered four different competitions at the Wintec culinary fare. Cupcakes, Cold Dessert, Barista and Mystery Box (like Masterchef).

This year we prepared all the entries together the day before, starting at lunchtime and finishing at 5.45pm. This allowed students to relax on the day and have some time to do any minor alterations to their entries.

In the Cupcake Competition, Sophie Huang, Madison Mitchell, Jasmine Hall, Briarly Dodunski, Brittany Pettit, Hannah Putt, Sophie McKenzie, all received a Bronze. Madison George and Christina Light both received a Silver medal with Christina obtaining the highest mark with a well-deserved Silver medal, just missing out on a Gold.

In the Cold Dessert, Sophie Huang received a Bronze medal. In the Mystery Box this was a last minute entry with Sophie Huang and Brittany Petit who did really well achieving a Silver medal.

In the Barista Competition John Paul College has done well over the last 5 years but this year we won the top three places with Mikala Van der Heuval receiving a Silver while Hannah McLean Tayla Malone and Sophie Smallbone both received Gold. Sophie Smallbone took out the Top Student at the competition for Barista with a score of 91 points.

All together we received 7 Bronze medals, 3 Silver medals and 3 Gold medals with a great experience for all the students to enjoy. Mr B Davis Food & Nutrition

Also on the 14th Of August Four students travelled to Auckland with Mr. Davis to compete in the National Barista Competition with Mikala Van der Heuval , Hannah McLean, Tayla Malone and Sophie Smallbone all doing extremely well finishing

third and they all received a bronze medal.

SENIOR SUMMER SHIRTS & NEW JACKET OPTION I would like to inform all parents/caregivers and students of a change to school uniform that will be phased in from Term 1 2019. This is to give you advance warning of this change and to ensure that if you are buying items of school uniform between now and the start of the new year that you are aware of the new requirements. The change is being introduced to improve the current standard of uniform being worn by students in the school, particularly by our senior students, and to ensure that we have a cost effective, smart uniform that is followed consistently by all of our student body. The senior girls and boys will now be required to wear a summer blouse/shirt with our logo embroidered on it. This can only be purchased at the Uniform Shop here at John Paul College. The price for these blouses/shirts will be $42.00. Students who currently have white polo shirts can still wear these up until 2021 (phasing in period Feb 2019 – Dec 2020) However if new blouse/shirts are required within this time the students will need to purchase the “new” blouse/shirt. We are also looking into changing the winter blouses and shirts for junior girls, senior girls and senior boys. This is still to be confirmed and will not come into effect until winter next year 2019. As you are aware we currently have a soft shell jacket option for the students. As of Term 1 2019 we are introducing another option which has water proof material, is warmer and also has a detachable hood. These Jackets will be $130.00. This will replace the plain black, waterproof jacket that the students have been allowed to wear on rainy days. There is no phase in period for this item. I hope the advance notice of this new requirement will enable you to plan your uniform purchases for the new year. Despite this change, our uniform still remains one of the most cost effective in the area and it remains both comfortable and easy to wear. Thank you in advance for your co-operation in this matter. Haylie Howes Uniform Shop Manager E: [email protected]

Find out more about the eligibility for fees-free. How to check if a student can get fees-free study Students can go to www.feesfree.govt.nz and enter their National Student Number (NSN) to check. The majority of secondary school students should receive a 'yes - you are eligible' response. If a student receives a 'we are not sure' response, they may need to provide further information to TEC. The frees-free website will let them know what they need to do. How does a student apply for fees-free? Students don't need to apply for fees-free Once the student has enrolled, TEC will check the student's details and if eligible, will pay the fees directly to the tertiary education provider or industry training organisation. They can pay up to a maximum of $12,000 including GST per year. Does a student still need to apply to StudyLink?
