Initial Steps forCongregational Leaders

• With FCN or HM, lay a foundation for successful health ministry development through information gathering, prayer, discernment, and study.

• Be willing to support a FCN or HM and his/her continuing education• Conduct a reasonable background check according to congregational policy to

assure FCN/HMs suitability as a volunteer, agent or employee• Ensure congregation’s insurance agent/company is aware an FCN will be active in

congregation, and provide for additional insurance liability rider if needed• Arrange for space, resources, and internet access for the FCN/HM as possible• Uphold whole-person health in sermons, meetings, etc.• Assist with development of a health committee for direction and support• Support the development of and endorse congregational policies related to health

and wholeness• Strive to model concepts of whole-person health• Sign a covenant agreement along with FCH/HM. (Steps listed here are the

agreements included in the covenant.) All parties will be willing to carry out agreements.

• Create and keep on file a job description for FCNs and/or HMs. Framework provided.

The Covenant• The Covenant is a promise to fulfill tasks that will support the success of

health ministry development. Success is dependent upon a variety of factors including the amount of time given to the ministry, support of leadership and congregation, and clarity of vision and goals.

• FCN or HM is asked to:– Attend an online course, an orientation retreat, and other visits– Attend at least 4 monthly Network meetings per year– Give 8 or more hours a month and record your activity in a private, web-

based documentation system– Seek out continuing education opportunities– Model concepts of health and wholeness– Assist with development of a health committee and collaborate with

others– Aid in the development of policies related to congregational/community

health and wholeness– In addition, FCNs need a current RN license and private liability insurance,

and to practice according to the ANA Faith Community Nursing Standards of Practice
