is an annual competition for all high school age students. Entries are accepted only
through Chapters, PSA-member clubs, and Councils. There were 403 prints and 270
digital images entered this year from all over the world.
Serving as judges were Sandra Matson, Jeff Klug, and Signe Emmerich. The full day
of judging was coordinated by Gerry Emmerich, Jr., FPSA, GMPSA, and under the
supervision of Kathleen Z. Braun, APSA, PPSA, PSA Youth Showcase Director.
Phyllis Bankier organized the digital section entries, and Kathy Braun, APSA, PPSA, organized the print
section entries.
Awards and Honorable Mentions were chosen in each section in each of the five categories (Architecture,
People and/or Animals, Scapes, Photojournalism, and Photographer’s Choice /Creative). Additional images
which included 113 prints and 70 digital images, were also chosen for exhibition at the PSA Annual Conference

PSA Council Challenge 2012
By Hazel Meredith, PSA Council Services Director
PSA Journal Camera Club & Council News Column Editor
The Council Services Director position was formed just over a year ago. One of the
projects on Hazel’s list is to have more contact with the Council PSA reps and
officers. Hazel would be interested in hearing from PSA Council members about
what their concerns and needs are, and how can PSA serve Councils better? What
kinds of competitions or programming would PSA Council’s be interested in? There
is a good base group of councils that are involved in PSA and enter the Council
Challenge competition. Hazel is working towards making this group even bigger and
better! Please e-mail Hazel Meredith, at [email protected].
In addition, please remind club newsletter
editors to add Hazel to their e-mail or
mailing list for newsletters (e-mail Hazel at the email address
above if needed). Reading what clubs around the country are
doing gives Hazel inspiration for her monthly columns.
Also, don’t forget to have PSA-member clubs or council reps join
the Camera Club Sparkle Yahoo group. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ccsparkle. At the top of the
page is a link to click to sign up (or sign in if you already have a Yahoo account). Then just follow the links
to register for the group. Once the rep or member is authorized a member can post (that’s to keep out the
spammers), council reps can begin to share questions, ideas and solutions with fellow clubs and councils.

Minnesota Valley Photography Club
minnesotavalleyphotoclub.org
MVPC was founded in 1984 and presently has over 100 members representing photography
backgrounds at all levels of experience. The Club focuses on continuing education and the
appreciation of the science, technique, and art of photography to enable its members to expand
their photographic skills with an emphasis on being inclusive to the wide variety of back-
grounds within the membership.
One means to achieve this goal that has been successful is a formula that includes a monthly
focus night emphasizing a specific topic. That information is then applied to a club activity for
members to utilize the skills learned. Then the photos are entered in a Salon Topic Competition
correlating to the task. Skilled judges in the topic area critique entries at the General monthly
meeting. The members with the highest scores usually enter these into regional competitions
which includes North Central Camera Club & Twin Cities Area Council of Camera Clubs.
John Beargrease, between 1879 & 1899, was pivotal in the development of the entire North Shore.
This yearly race, commemorating his accomplishments, is held in the cold, snowy conditions of
winter. It is a photographer’s delight in Minnesota!
Photographing The Dogs! When, what, & where to photograph dogsleds in northern
Minnesota is presented at a general meeting by experi-
enced club members. The trail map to success is in place!
Now, we need snow to complete the club activity!

interest to the novice and experienced photographer alike, has seen a rapid rise in club membership.
Our members say this works!”
