GLAM/SI – Missions & Visions

GLAM/SIGLAM/SI seeks to improve

coverage of topics related to the Smithsonian Institution through

SMITHSONIANMission:The increase and diffusion

of knowledge.to the Smithsonian Institution through Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and related websites by working with the Smithsonian, its affiliates, and public resources.

of knowledge.Vision:Shaping the future by

preserving our heritage, discovering new knowledge, and sharing our resources with the world.

It’s simple – we have similar missions and visions - Wikipedia is about empowering and engaging people worldwide to create and share open knowledge, inline with the Smithsonian mission and vision. We have established GLAM/SI as a way to create collaboration between Wikipedia and the Smithsonian. As you can see here it’s obvious – if I doesn’t make sense to work together – then we wouldn’t be here!

You can see from the slide – it’s quite obvious what GLAM stands for: Galleries, Libraries, Archive and Museums. Which is why we are here! GLAM is a way for a cultural institution to work with Wikipedians to improve content about subjects related to them.

Liam Wyatt & Lori Phillips at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis.

The cornerstone project for GLAM is the Wikipedian-in-Residence. This program seeks to bring Wikipedia in-house at these institutions to build a proactive relationship of mutual benefit without undermining the principles of either organization. Liam was the first, at the British Museum. They created Featured Articles (how many?!), hosted backstage pass events which allow Wikipedians to tour with curators and collections staff to see just that – behind the scenes. We work with staff to train them on how to edit, learn about how Wikipedia works, collaborate to chose items to focus on online and establish a long lasting relationship.

Other projects we’re involved in – WikiProject:Public Art which was created by Richard McCoy at the IMA and Jennifer Mikualy of Alverno College to document all works of public art on Wikipedia and to encourage public ownership. I’m partial, I’m a project leader. We’ve documented 250+ articles about public art on WP and to date I have completed what we belive to be the most complete listings of public art in Indy and DC available. Some of it utilizing SIRIS. WikiXDC was hosted in January to celebrate the 10th birthday of Wikipedia at the Archives, that’s David Ferriero giving the keynote. FedFelix works with the National Archives to digitize public domain films from the Federal Government and share them through the internet archive. Wikimania is the main conference for Wikipedia we’re hoping to host here in 2012.

Without you GLAM can’t be what it is – we want you to help! We’d love donations of images, videos and recordings to be released Wiki world where they can be utilized by educators and Wikipedians worldwide. One on one collaborations where an individual Wikipedian works closely with museums staff like curators to expand on and research a specific topic. Backstage passes where you invite us to visit you for a day, learn about your institution and your collections. And finally, YOU! As individuals! You’re tech savvy, you can edit! We don’t’ bite and we have lots of WIKILOVE to give. We’d love to show you how this whole thing works. So join us, we’d love for you to share what you know and love with the world.
