• Courses appropriate for pharmacy technician participation are designated by an ACPE universal activity number ending in the letter “T.” The number of credit hours is based on the amount of content applicable to pharmacy technicians. Please review the ACPE information for each session to determine the amount of credit offered.

Learning Objectives Learning objectives for all CPE sessions are provided on the JFPS 2017 website, www.jfpsinfo.org, and are announced at the beginning of each session. To locate the learning objectives online, select the specific education session from the listing under the Education tab.

Learning Levels To help you more efficiently plan your time, the content of the education sessions is categorized into two levels of expertise: • Level 1: Baseline knowledge of the subject area is required.

The information presented will be a primer on the topic and appropriate for a wide range of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.

• Level 2: Experience with the topic is recommended, but advanced expertise or specialty practice in the subject area is not necessary. These educational offerings will focus on expanding the learner’s knowledge and application of the new and/or more complex information.

Activity Types Activity types are designed to give attendees an idea of the intended outcome of a continuing pharmacy education (CPE) activity. • Knowledge-based activities are designed to enhance or add

to pharmacists’ or technicians’ knowledge of a topic; mostly didactic sessions.

• Application-based activities provide pharmacists and technicians with opportunities to apply their knowledge, usually through case studies or other application activities.

• Practice-based activities are longer, more comprehensive activities of at least 15 hours that incorporate knowledge, skills, and performance. These activities are also known as certificate training programs.

CONTINUING PHARMACY EDUCATION INFORMATION

Depending on their organization or branch of service, qualified attendees are able to earn up to 21 hours of continuing pharmacy education (CPE) credit. Sessions approved for CPE credits are indicated by an ACPE number and the number of CEUs in the Program Guide.

0800–0900Innovative Health CareActivity Type: Knowledge-basedLevel 1ACPE# 0202-0000-17-171-L04-P/T0.1 CEUsHealth care delivery has undergone a revolution over the past 50 years. The concept of consumerism and managing one’s own interactions with providers has driven patients, providers, and payers to look for new methods of care delivery. At the same time, expectations for health outcomes vary greatly by disease state and the patient’s responsibility for participating in programs aimed at adherence and health care utilization underestimated. While technological advances have become an integral part in the revolution with interactive physician visits, physical exams and vital statistic monitoring being considered the norm, the impact on these advances has been less than optimal. What is working—and what is not—is explored from the perspective of the overall health and well-being of our society.Speaker(s): Kathryn Bronstein, PhD, RN

As the result of a movement in the aviation industry, Just Culture is redefining our system of workplace justice in many other industries over the last 20 years, including health care. Just Culture reshapes our understanding of accountability, the role of the system, and the role of human behavior, allowing us to distinguish between human behaviors and help us develop a way to establish a safe environment by managing the system and behavior. This presentation highlights how to put “Just Culture” in your work environment.Speaker(s): David Marx, Outcome Engenuity

A market research forecast of worldwide pharmaceutical sales predicts that, in 2020, 11 of the top 20 products will be biologics. The Biologics Price Competition and Innovation (BPCI or “Biologics”) Act of 2009 opened the door for faster approval of follow-on biologic products by creating a framework for an abbreviated licensure pathway. FDA issued final guidances for industry on biosimilars in 2015 and 2016 and posted draft guidances on nonproprietary naming of biologic products and on biosimilar interchangeability in January 2017. This presentation highlights the differences between biosimilars and either conventional generic drugs or bio-original products, the legal requirements of biosimilars, and outlines the biosimilar approval process. With the growth and expansion of pharmacy-based vaccination services, the role of the pharmacist and pharmacy technician has expanded. There have been many recent developments in the field of immunizations, including new vaccines, new recommendations for older vaccines, and constant changing recommendations. As legislative trends move toward increasing the pharmacist’s authority to administer immunizations, it is important that all pharmacy staff are aware of the policies and procedures to ensure patient safety and the special considerations and requirements needed for pharmacy-based vaccination programs. This session provides the most recent developments and recommendations made by the Advisory Committee on Immunizations to allow pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to make appropriate clinical decisions and to become advocates for their patients in the area of vaccines.Speaker(s): CAPT (Ret) Stephan Foster, PharmD, FAPhA, US Public Health Service

One area where today’s pharmacies are offering expanded healthcare services is in the Emergency department (ED). Several pharmacy groups have identified the benefits of decentralization of pharmacy services to the ED. This session will describe the role of the clinical pharmacist in the ED setting, focusing on appropriate utilization and expanding functions. The military working environment can be dangerous, especially in combat situations, and exposes service members to hazards not routinely experienced by civilians. This is evident in the rates of traumatic brain injuries (TBI), which are significantly higher in veterans than in the civilian population. Post-traumatic seizures (PTS) are a sequela of TBI that can have both short- and long-term physiological consequences. Therefore, prevention of PTS should be a goal of therapy within any pharmaceutical care plan related to patients with TBI. Antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are an important treatment modality for the prevention of PTS and military pharmacists are uniquely positioned in deployed operations to ensure that they are utilized effectively and safely. The primary focus of this session is to present evidence for the use of AEDs for the prevention of PTS in TBI in order to achieve the best patient outcomes.Speaker(s): Maj Sean Meredith, Canadian Forces

Academic Detailing (AD) is designed to bridge this gap.AD is a multifaceted service for clinicians, by clinicians, that provides individualized, evidence-based, educational outreach visits. It has been effective in changing prescribing and impacting the utilization of evidence- based treatment modalities in a variety of practice settings. The AD approach customizes content and barrier-resolution strategies to meet individual clinician needs in the context of local operations. The academic detailer offers one-to-one visits with physicians, and health care team members to enhance

prescribing through targeted education on medication safety initiatives. Along with provider and patient education, the AD program develops audit and feedback tools to assist with population management. This program provides information on how to utilize these techniques and showcases the Veterans Affairs AD’s impact on aligning providers’ prescribing behavior with clinical practice guidelines.Speaker(s): Sarah Popish, Veterans Affairs Academic Detailing Service
