O The Donna J. Hardesty Sports Complex is home to The University of Tulsa softball team.

Hardesty Sports Complex

The complex, which opened for play in 2002, did so as TU softball’s first on-campus softball home. The softball stadium is a picturesque setting featuring a burmed sitting area with a facade of Tennessee Ledgestone that matches the rest of the TU campus. The field also fea-tures a shrub-lined outfield fence, as well as an outfield warning track, bullpens and batting cages along with a press box and scoreboard. Sunken dugouts are located just below the seating, which includes a capacity of approxi-mately 800.

In its eight-year history, the Hardesty Complex has provided the scenery for some of the great-est moments in Tulsa softball history:• 2002, TU posted a 16-2 home record in the

new stadium, still the best home winning percentage in program history.

• 2006, Tulsa won the Conference USA Championship in its first season in the league with a 3-0 defeat of Marshall with an eighth-inning three-run walk-off home run.

• 2009, Tulsa won the C-USA regular season championship on its home field on the final weekend of the season with a sweep of Southern Miss.

The complex, named in honor of TU alumna Donna Hardesty, also includes the soccer field, track, multi-purpose recreational field, student health and fitness center, student apartments

and additional campus parking. The cost of the development exceeded $30 million. The 30-acre development to the west of Delaware Avenue extends from 10th Street to Fourth Place and Delaware Avenue to Columbia Avenue.

Roger Hardesty, president of The Hardesty Companies, served as a member of the TU Board of Trustees from 1995-1998.

The namesake of the facility, Donna Hardesty, is a TU alumna. Their daughter Debbie Cristo is also a TU alumna, and daughter Michelle Clary attended TU.

The facility has impacted all facets of the softball program since the first game took place during the 2002 campaign.

and the 2008 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis National Championship.

In his tenure at Ball State, Cunningham guided a program with 19 intercollegiate sports and a budget of $12.4 mil-lion. In his final year, Ball State completed a $12M cam-paign to renovate the football stadium. In raising those funds, Cunningham secured the largest single gift in Ball State Athletics history.

He implemented a variety of firsts for the Cardinals. The football team played the first-ever night game in Ball State Stadium and the first-ever weeknight home game in the university’s 78-year history in 2003. Cunningham also developed and implemented a marketing plan for a record football attendance mark in 2003. He was able to secure funding exclusively from private donors to have permanent lights installed at Ball State Stadium.

Prior to his appointment at Ball State, Cunningham spent 15 years working in the athletics department at the Uni-versity of Notre Dame.

At Notre Dame between 2000-02, Cunningham served as associate director of athletics for external affairs. He renegotiated the school’s footwear contract, developed a communications and marketing plan, created market-ing teams for all 26 varsity sports, increased corporate sponsorship income, created a financial/equity plan for the department and served as chairman of the NCAA Di-vision I Women’s Golf Committee.

Before that, he served as associate athletics director for finance and facilities (1995-2000). In that time, Cun-ningham was responsible for a $30 million budget and all business affairs.

In that capacity, Cunningham was responsible for de-veloping and implementing an equity plan to meet Title IX requirements, completed the master plan for Notre Dame athletic facilities, coordinated the bid process and negotiation with Westwood for football radio rights, and helped plan and complete the $50 million renovation and 20,000 seat expansion of Notre Dame Stadium. He also coordinated the planning and construction of the War-ren Golf Course, an 18-hole championship course on the Notre Dame campus.

Cunningham earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration, both from Notre Dame, in 1984 and 1988, respectively. He played on the Irish golf team in 1982-83.

Cunningham serves on the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Committee and a member of the Rotary Club of Tulsa. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for the Tulsa Sports Commission, the Alzheimers Association of Oklahoma Board of Directors and the Folds of Honor Foundation Board. Cunningham also served on the Gatorade National Advisory Board and has been a featured speaker at numerous NACDA and I-A institute conferences.

Born in Flint, Mich., and raised in Naples, Fla., Cunning-ham and his wife, Tina, have four children: Matthew, Mi-chael, John and Sarah.

Steadman UphamPresident

Steadman Upham currently serves as the 17th presi-dent of The University of Tulsa, a position he has held since 2004. Prior to coming to TU, he served as presi-dent and chief executive officer of Claremont Gradu-ate University, a doctoral research university and a member of the Oxford-style consortium known as The Claremont Colleges in Claremont, California. Upham received his Ph.D. degree in anthropology in 1980 from Arizona State University. In 1981, he joined New Mexico State University where he held the posi-tions of chief archaeologist and assistant professor of archaeology. He achieved the rank of tenured profes-sor of archaeology in 1989. Before leaving New Mexi-co State in 1990, he also served as the faculty affiliate, Center for Social Research (1985 – 1990); curator of Archaeology, University Museum (1984 – 1990); and associate dean of the Graduate School (1987 – 1990). From 1990 to 1998, Upham worked at the University of Oregon as vice provost for research and dean of the Graduate School and professor of anthropology. Upham is a widely published archaeologist, having written or edited 10 books and more than 75 book chapters and journal articles. He has lectured exten-sively in the United States and Canada. Throughout his career, Upham has been singled out for his achieve-ments as an educator and administrator. In 2001, he received the Academy Gold Medal of Honor by the Academy of Transdisciplinary Learning and Advance Studies. He was named to the Graduate College Hall of Fame by Arizona State University and named an ASU Distinguished Alumnus in 1998. The University of Oregon presented Upham its Martin Luther King, Jr. Award and Director’s Award for Service and Achieve-ment, both in 1998. Early in his academic career, Up-ham’s teaching skills were recognized by New Mexico State University, which presented him the Donald C. Roush Award for Excellence in Teaching, 1987, and a year later named him a Master Teacher. Upham’s extensive professional service and accom-plishments include commissioner of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges; chairman of the Board of Directors of the Council of Graduate Schools; president, National Physical Science Consortium; di-rector of The American Mutual Funds; director of the St. Francis Health System; director of the Tulsa Cham-ber of Commerce; director of the American Council on Education; director of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, and member of the Fund for the Improve-ment of Postsecondary Education National Board.

Bubba CunninghamDirector.of.Athletics

Bubba Cunningham is in his sixth year as the Director of Athletics at The University of Tulsa. He was named to the position on October 7, 2005, and began his tenure at Tulsa on November 11, 2005. Cunningham came to Tulsa following three years as the athletics director at Ball State University.

In June 2009, Cunningham was honored as the 2008-09 FBS Central Region Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year, an award presented by the National Associa-tion of Collegiate Directors of Athletics at the Annual NACDA Convention.

During his tenure at Tulsa, Cunningham has guided TU through its infancy of membership in Conference USA and has spearheaded a $60 million athletics initiative, which included a $20 million renovation to Skelly Field at H.A. Chapman Stadium, a goal of $20 million for an athletics scholarship endowment and $20 million for coach’s salary endowment.

Cunningham has implemented and continues devel-oping a strategic plan for personal and professional growth and development for TU’s student-athletes, coaches and athletic staff. He also continues develop-ing relationships with national sponsors.

During Cunningham’s five years, Tulsa has won a league-best 28 Conference USA Championships. In addition, the sports of men’s and women’s basketball, men’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis and volley-ball have made national post-season tournament play. The Tulsa football team has made four straight Bowl appearances, winning three of those games.

Academic success has thrived under Cunningham’s leadership. Tulsa has 17 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America performers over the last four years, while each year more than 150 student-athletes have earned Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll accolades, including a high of 199 for the 2009-10 academic year. Tulsa has had a total of 11 student-athletes earn C-USA Scholar Athlete of the Year honors.

Tulsa had the school’s best-ever ranking in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings for the 2008-09 sea-son, as the Hurricane ranked 61st with 336.6 points in the final standings.

Since Cunningham’s arrival, Tulsa has also hosted conference, regional and national events. TU has hosted Conference USA Championships for men’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, and track and field. Tulsa also hosted NCAA Men’s Tennis Regional Tournaments

set five individual single season school records. Lauren Lindsay broke records for batting average (.406), on-base percentage (.486), runs scored (49) and hits (76). Jackie Lawrence set the school record for most strikeouts (186), and tied another for most complete games (24). Brooke Smart also recorded a higher on-base percentage (.482) than the previous school record.

In 2008, Bargfeldt led Tulsa to a 34-25 overall record and 14-10 in C-USA play and its second NCAA Regional appearance. That squad tied a school record in on-base percentage with .352, set by his 2006 team. Hurricane players in 2008 set or tied seven single-season school records.

In 2007, he led Tulsa to a 30-28 record to become the first coach in program history to post winning seasons in his first two years at the helm. In his first season as skipper, Bargfeldt led TU to the program’s first-ever conference championship, in addition to the school’s first-ever NCAA Regional bid by winning Conference USA’s automatic bid. In that campaign, Bargfeldt led TU to a 34-24 record and three tourna-ment titles to go along with its regular-season and post-season conference championships. Tulsa also set team records for walks drawn and on-base per-centage, all while playing in the fourth fewest games in the program’s history.

Prior to coming to Tulsa, Bargfeldt served as assistant coach at Georgia Tech for the 2003-04 season. While at Tech, his primary duties involved working with the pitchers and catchers. He was the recruiting coordi-nator, served as the bench coach and was a batting practice pitcher for the Yellow Jackets.

While at Georgia Tech, the Yellow Jackets finished the 2004 season with a 49-17 record and an NCAA Regional appearance. Ranked as high as 18th in the country that season, Georgia Tech and third-team All-

American Jessica Sallinger broke 15 school records while finishing fourth nationally in earned run average with a 0.97 mark. Tech also registered 29 shutouts in 2004, while defeating two top-10 teams for the first time in school history.

Before his one-year stint at Georgia Tech, Bargfeldt coached at Pendleton Heights High School and Pendleton Middle School for 22 years, including the 2004-05 school year. While there, he helped lead the Arabian varsity baseball team to five sectional championships and one regional title.

From 1980-82, Bargfeldt was an assistant baseball coach at Anderson University in Anderson, Ind., serving as pitching and hitting coach. He completed his bachelor’s degree in 1981 while serving as an assistant coach at Anderson.

An NAIA Honorable Mention All-American in football and baseball, Bargfeldt was drafted in the 31st round of the 1977 Major League Baseball amateur draft by the Chicago Cubs.

Bargfeldt, a former ASA National Player Representative, was also a member of the ASA National Board of Directors (2000-2004). He served on the Men’s National Team Selection Committee dur-ing that time as well. As a member of the board, he assisted with the selection of the coaching staff and the national team members. The 2002 team won the program’s first Pan-American Qualifier Gold Medal.

As a member of the ASA’s Men’s Fast Pitch national team in 1991, Bargfeldt won a silver medal at the Pan American Games as the starting shortstop. In 1993, he was on the gold medal-winning team at the U.S. Sports Festival. He was also a five-time ASA Men’s Fastpitch All-American.

Bargfeldt and his wife, Barbara, have three children: Kenny, Alexya and Jeb.

John BargfeldtHead Coach6TH YEAR

In just five years at the helm of The University of Tulsa softball program, John Bargfeldt has become the winningest coach in school history and built a championship-winning program. Under Bargfeldt, the Golden Hurricane has won four Conference USA Championships – 2006 regular season and tourna-ment, and 2009 regular season and tournament titles – and reached the NCAA Tournament three times – 2006, 2008 and 2009.

Bargfeldt is the only coach in Tulsa history to post five winning seasons, and has a career 169-115 record. He has the most wins and the highest winning percentage (.595) of any softball coach in TU history.

Bargfeldt’s players have broken into the top 10 of the individual season charts in nearly every category, and his five teams have set school records in 16 catego-ries. In addition, 15 of Bargfeldt’s pupils rank among the top-10 in every major category in individual career history.

Under Bargfeldt’s tutelage, Tulsa has produced an All-American, 26 all-conference players and three NFCA all-region players. In addition, the Golden Hurricane boasts 10 C-USA Academic Medalists, five C-USA All-Academic Team members, two ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and three Academic All-District student-athletes.

In 2010, Bargfeldt became the winningest coach in school history. His squad finished among the top three in C-USA and won at least 13 league games for the fifth straight year. TU produced four all-conference selections. Lauren Lindsay (2007-10) became Tulsa’s All-American when she was selected as a 2010 NFCA Third-Team All-America.

The 2009 season was perhaps the greatest in school history and certainly the most accomplished. The Hurricane posted record of 40-17 overall and 16-4 in C-USA play, and won the programs’ second C-USA regular season and tournament championships to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history. The Golden Hurricane won its first NCAA Regional game, and advanced to the championship round of the NCAA Norman Regional.

In addition, the 2009 team set 10 team single-season school records, including batting average (.294), runs scored (273), hits (452), home runs (43), RBI (252), total bases (675), slugging percentage (.439), on-base percentage (.369), fewest hits allowed (308) and bat-ters struck out (364). Crissy StrimpleAssistant Coach4TH YEAR

Former Golden Hurricane slugger Crissy Strimple is in her fourth season as an assistant coach at The University of Tulsa.

Strimple played third base for TU during the 2002 and 2003 campaigns, following a two-year tenure at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

At Tulsa, Strimple’s main responsibilities include working with the Hurricane infield and serving as recruiting cordinator. Strimple coordinates Tulsa’s travel while overseeing the program’s budget.

Strimple came to TU after serving as an assistant coach at Central Arkansas for one season. While at UCA, Strimple was responsible for the coordination of recruiting, as well as supervising the academic prog-ress of the team. She also worked heavily with the defensive schemes for the Bears. Prior to her stint at UCA, she served as the director of softball operations at Arkansas for two years. Strimple was also a team manager where her duties included travel, equipment, field maintenance and general management of the softball office.

As a player with the Golden Hurricane, Strimple led the team in home runs with 10 as a senior and was the team offensive player of the year in both her junior and senior seasons. Her 18 career home runs still ranks sixth all-time at TU. Defensively, she holds the top two single-season assist totals in the Tulsa record book. Strimple also became the first freshman in NEO history to earn first-team NJCAA All-America Region II honors.

Strimple graduated from The University of Tulsa in 2003 with a degree in exercise sports science. She earned her master’s degree in education with empha-sis on sports administration from Arkansas in 2006.

Brooke SmartAssistant Coach1ST YEAR

Brooke Smart is in her first year as an assistant coach with the Golden Hurricane softball team. Her responsibilities include coaching outfielders, serving as the dugout coach, and coordi-nating camps.

Smart played outfield for the Golden Hurricane from 2006-09 and led TU to two Conference USA regular season and tournament championships, and to three NCAA Tournament appearances.
