Hello July! We have offi cially crept past the middle

of the year! And... it’s TAX time! Coupled with this, is the end of Term 2 for our school friends and the start of a new fi nancial year for our friends in business.

Another month passes and I wish I could hit the ‘pause’ button for just a moment. Last month I learned of a dear friend who is facing a health-scare and a long battle ahead.

Many of us have friends, family, co-workers and acquaintances facing similar battles. When we face situations like this it brings with it mixed emotions and a shadow of sadness, memories of the past and thoughts of the future. A desire to stop and appreciate all those good times and cherish every single moment that life has to off er.

This month we have many stories of hope, delight, inspiration, success and courage for you to revel in. So many wonderful people, moments and events occurring in and around our local community.

Our resident Fitness Expert, Merinda, shares her secrets to achieve ‘fl at toned abs before summer’ on page 17, while our Health Expert, Rhonda, shares some wise tips in ‘Pampering Your Skin’ on page 12.

On another note, this month we farewell a true gentleman, Bruno Zuliani, Principal of Llandilo Public School, as he enters retirement. While I had only known Bruno for a short time, since the inception of this very publication, it was such a highlight and a pleasure each and every time I came into contact with him. His show of continued support, positive encouragement and regular contributions to our publication will be sadly missed. We wish him all the very best for what the future holds.

And, let me fi nish with a HUGE congratulations to the team at the District Gazette, our Advertisers, Contributors and YOU, the community. While we have produced over 396 publications across our portfolio of publications - we are so very excited to have achieved our 1st Year milestone in producing the Jordan Springs Gazette! We truly thank you, for embracing the Jordan Springs Gazette, and we look forward to growing with the community in the years to come.

I know I have said it before, but it rings so very true! There are magical moments in every day, we just have to take the time to see them. Enjoy your community news.

A Mosaic of a Strong CommunityA multicultural mosaic at the Llandilo Association Hall was

recently given new life by community members. The Chinese Community Artwork mosaic was funded

through the Council’s Magnetic Places Neighbourhood Renewal and Community Grants Program in 2008.

The recent restoration work was organised by the Penrith Women’s Health Centre and led by artist Diamando Koutsellis with funding from Magnetic Places in 2013- 2014.

The artist worked alongside Llandilo residents, including members of the Chinese and Maltese communities.

Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the mosaic was understandably important to the residents.

“It symbolises the harmony of residents in Llandilo from diff erent cultures and backgrounds working creatively together to create something beautiful for their neighbourhood. The restoration work was also a way to celebrate and further strengthen relationships,” Cr Fowler said.

Participants were able to contribute to the work in various ways including recreating the mosaic, working on the surrounding garden and cooking for the volunteers.

Media arts producer Tokyo Love In has created a YouTube video of the restoration work taking place. Simply go to Youtube and type in ‘Chinese community artwork’ into the search bar.

FAITH – ANGLICAN CHURCH UPDATE

The bite of the morning air; the waft of burning dust as heaters are turned on; deciduous trees stripped bare; coughs and sniffl es: winter. It’s here again.

2014 is half-way through! Can you believe it? How quickly the days and weeks seem to pass by. Only the other week the year was just beginning, the kids were starting back at school, the footy season just kicking off . But now that it’s winter and we’re six months into the year it’s easy to look back and wonder, “How did that go by so fast?”

Our schedules get so hectic trying to meet all the demands of modern life. We continually jump from one thing to the next and barely keep up, let alone feel like we’re moving forward. And the reality is that time fl ies especially quickly when we’re busy. In this way, annual markers like the changing seasons can helpfully prompt us to step back and take stock.

However, winter is also the end of the yearly cycle of life. It reminds us of the inevitability of death, that life is short. Couple this with the frantic pace of our lives and winter can evoke quite a depressing outlook for the future.

Into this bleak picture the Bible brings hope. For, the God who “changes times and seasons” (Dan. 2:21) is the same God who “causes us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1 Peter 1:3). Jesus, the one who has already died and risen again, off ers eternal life, life which will not be soured by the winter of death.

Time fl ies but only this life is short. For more information about the hope that Jesus off ers, contact us on 4730 3434 or via the website www.toms4christ.com

It was once stated that the attempt to marry theology to scientific disciplines in a particular decade would risk being a widow in the next. This highlights the exciting and exacting world of true science. Here the emphasis being discovery based on truth.

As with all things in life new knowledge shapes our

existence. Utilized honestly it enhances. Theology as with the scientific disciplines is not static. Perhaps the oldest of all disciplines, theology is continually exploring, interpreting new understanding. Most important is that there is a ‘norm’ to which all this work is related. This is the accepted fact that God ‘is’. As such creation has meaning, we in ourselves have meaning.

It is the continual ‘search for meaning’ that enhances life. In Christian thought this ‘meaning’ is based on the life and work of a Palestinian peasant living in Galilee, a province of the Roman Empire some 2000 years ago. In what is understood of the history of humanity this is a ‘blip’ in the time scale. However, interestingly this Palestinian peasant by his life gives meaning to the whole history of human existence and of the universe.

Christian scripture records that this peasant ‘emptied himself’ and in doing so gives ‘new life’ to the created order. Through the centuries since the death and resurrection of Jesus, the

Christ, theology has had the exciting and exacting task of interpretation and the relativeness of this in each generation.

Now theology has its own methodology, scientific disciplines another. Each is not static.

Theology [the science of God] is involved in the reality of Jesus the Christ. Science in the reality of life and the universe. Not contradicting but corrective of each other. The important rider is that the Christian faith and belief in this peasant from Galilee is not based on intellectual understanding, nor is it based on an act of personal will. It is based on trust. This trust develops the whole person as one commits to Jesus the Christ’s message [Gospel-‘good news’]. Then it becomes an act of knowing, willing and feeling: a trust which includes the acceptance of the Person and message as true.

Arrrr! Me’ Hearties!An exciting competition

was recently organised by Lend Lease for the people and community of Jordan Springs, with great prizes up for grabs. Jordan Springettes aged up until 12 years had the opportunity to design the new fl ag for the Jordan Springs Pirate Ship.

The Overall Winner will take home a $200 Eftpos voucher, with a People’s Choice Winner claiming a $100 Eftpos voucher. Age Category Winners (0-3 years, 4-8 years and 9-12 years) will also win a $50 Eftpos voucher.

The designs needed to be A4 size and judges were looking for entries that best summarised the Jordan Springs culture or paid tribute to the area’s traditional land owners.

The competition was organised through the Jordan Springs Facebook page, where entry forms were obtained through the Facebook page and the Jordan Springs Sales and Information Offi ce. The competition ran from June 13 to July 2, 2014 and the response from all the children’s entries was overwhelming.

The Jordan Springs Gazette wishes everyone who entered the competition the best of luck and looks forward to congratulating the winners. Arrrr!

Dear Parents, Caregivers and Friends,My sincere thanks to the many families

from Llandilo and Jordan Springs who have been kind enough to make positive comments about this column. As of the 27th June 2014, I have retired from full time employment with the Department

of Education and Communities. Ms Joan Smyth will lead Llandilo Public School for the remainder of this year and as of next month will communicate with you via this column.

The Minister for Education Mr Adrian Piccoli and other dignitaries visited Llandilo Public School on Monday 16th June and were very impressed with our students and hard working staff . It was a pleasure hosting the visit and receiving high praise and comments of our school.

Penrith Network Director Mrs Deb Summerhayes was also a visitor to our school last month attending our Parent Assembly and applauding the wonderful entertainment provided by class 4LS. Director Summerhayes made comment of how she always enjoys visiting our place of learning to see the fabulous work produced by our students. She too, acknowledged the great work of school staff in providing and catering for the needs of our girls and boys.

In conclusion and now as an “outsider” to Llandilo school, I am steadfast in maintaining that as a local Public School, Llandilo off ers a rich and diverse range of learning opportunities and curriculum and, a wide range of initiatives catering for the welfare needs of all of its students.

My Kindest Regards.Bruno Zuliani

Jordan Residents Group Update

The Jordan Springs Residents Group has launched a Facebook

page designed for anyone that lives, visits, or loves Jordan Springs.

This aim of the group is to encourage friendly, healthy discussion about life in Jordan Springs and grow the sense of community.

We will post regular updates from the Residents Group as well as allow local businesses to post special off ers, encourage residents to have a friendly chat, as questions, and access the combined experience and knowledge of the Jordan Springs community.

We invite you to join our page, which can be found by searching Facebook for “Jordan Springs NSW 2747” or by visiting www.facebook.com/groups/jordansprings/

The end of Term 2 and the beginning of Term 3 are always busy times at Henry Fulton Public School.

Our Stage 3 students returned from their three day camp at Milsons Island Sport and Recreation Camp, with a comment from the

camp manager that, “our students were some of the best behaved groups they have ever had stay there”, high praise indeed.

Our school choir has been rehearsing for their performance at the Cranebrook Learning Communities Performing Arts Festival. This festival is next term and is one of the highlights on the school’s calendar. Not only do our choir perform but we also have our four dance groups performing and our members of the combined schools band.

Our whole school comes together for our K-6 Athletics Carnival at Hobartville early next term. This is a fun family day with families encouraged to attend. During the day there are lots of fun activities but there is also a serious side to the day where our school athletics team to attend the district carnival are selected. On the day the older children participate in running events (100&200m), long jump. Discus, shot putt plus many other activities. We also hold the 800m and high jump at the school in the days before the carnival.

As you can see it’s another busy time coming up at Henry Fulton Public School.

If you have been reading this column for a while, you will have gathered by now that I love Descriptive Praise as a parenting strategy. That is, not saying “good boy/girl” or “good job/work” when your child has done something well, but to actually describe what you like about what he or she did and why.

And if you have been using descriptive praise you know how eff ective it can be.

BUT…If you are also using the words “naughty” and “bad” when

describing your child’s mistaken behaviour, you may fi nd that the descriptive praise doesn’t work so well.

Why?Because words are powerful. If you use “naughty” and “bad” your

child will internalise those words, and he or she will prove just how naughty and bad he or she can be! I have consulted with some parents over the past few months who have come to me asking why their kids are spiralling into increasingly negative behaviour to the point where they are uncontrollable, even though the parents have been using descriptive praise. In each of these cases the parents have been using “naughty” and “bad” a lot.

I have said this so many times talking to parents over the past few months it bears repeating here…

REMOVE “NAUGHTY” AND “BAD” FROM YOUR VOCABULARY WHEN DESCRIBING YOUR CHILD”S BEHAVIOUR!!!!

And get rid of that damned “naughty” chair or corner. Call it a “chill out” or “calm down” or “quiet time” place.

When you use these very powerful and nasty words on your child and you use them often, you are digging a pit of shame for him so deep that it may take a lifetime for him to crawl out of it. Shame during childhood can lead to mental health problems during adolescence and adulthood.

Think about it – if someone close to you calls you ugly or stupid often enough you start to believe it. In fact, if you are sharing your home with an adult who says these things to you it is domestic violence (emotional abuse).

So, when is it ever OK to use these words with the little people whom we are supposed to be guiding, educating, caring for, nurturing, growing up, loving? Never.

The next question from parents is “what do I say instead?” Tell a child ‘what to do’ rather than ‘what not to do’. Always keep it positive. For example, “stand still while I fi x your collar” and then follow-up with descriptive praise “thank you for staying still, it was so helpful, and it gets it done quickly”. Paying attention to the positive encourages more positive behaviour from your child. And if your child has had some kind of mistaken behaviour, instead of focussing on who she is (for example, clumsy, careless), focus on what she did (for example, broke the window) and with her assistance work out what she can do next time (for example, kick the ball towards the fence).

To fi nd out more about positive parenting I highly recommend that you do Triple P (Positive Parenting Program). It’s fabulous!

Online Forum LaunchedPenrith Progression launched an online forum last month,

open to anyone who wants to participate in the city’s future. Project Director Craig Butler said the forum was at Penrith Council’s Our Future site, which had been used for consultation on other subjects in previous years.

“The Penrith Progression online forum is an opportunity for residents and business people to get involved in Penrith’s future,” Mr Butler said. “Through Penrith Progression we will work together to revitalise the city centre and create local jobs.

“I know that there are many people who want to be part of this important process, but cannot make our gatherings and forums due to work and other commitments.

“This is another way you can have your say in the future of your city.” Discussion points on the site now include: What city living should look like, and How to attract people to our city centre. It is easy to join our online forum, just go to http://ourfuture.com.au/penrith-progression to sign up and get involved. Go to our website: www.penrithprogression.com.au to fi nd out more.

PARENTS CORNERHEALTH MATTERS

Pamper Your SkinDid you know the skin is the largest organ of the body, yet it

is the one which we generally give the least thought to when it comes to our health.

Not only does the skin hold us together, it also regulates body temperature, acts as a blood reservoir, protects against some forms of bacteria and viruses, allows us to experience various sensations eg warmth, coolness, touch, pressure, vibration & pain, aids in excretion and absorption of various substances, aids in the synthesis of Vitamin D and allows transdermal drug administration. All good reasons to look after your skin.

The best way to do this is Remain hydrated by drinking healthy water – make wise

choices – even showering in chemical laden water can have an eff ect on your skin and your health.

Limit sun exposure – particularly in summer to prevent skin cancers etc. Time spent in the early morning and late afternoon is preferable to the middle of the day.

Wear protective clothing – to protect from sun and wind.Moisturise regularly – summer or winter your skin can dry out.

You need to replenish the moisture with eff ective moisturisers. Choose these wisely. Read the label and check the ingredients which are listed in order of concentration. Some may be classed as potentially harmful and can be absorbed transdermally. They may also irritate existing skin conditions such as eczema and dermatitis.

Pamper your skin – look after your health. The choice is yours!

Proactive Inspections Could Save LivesPenrith Council’s Swimming Pools Barrier Inspection Program

has one aim – to stop drownings. The program developed and adopted by Council in 2013

as a response to changes to state legislation, was designed to enhance the safety of children under fi ve around backyard swimming pools.

Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said Council offi cers had begun contacting pool and spa owners to organise inspections.

“The Inspection Program will of course take time to roll out across the City,” Cr Fowler said. “But we are encouraging pool and spa owners to contact us to organise inspections at their homes as soon as possible.

“We need to ensure pools and spas have safety barriers that meet the Australian standards. By being proactive, we can stop drownings and the devastating injuries that can occur to children who nearly drown.”

The Barrier Inspection Program applies to all pools and spas, including those that are portable and infl atable.

Fees apply for inspections. It is $150 for the fi rst inspection and $100 if a second inspection is required.

“These fees cover our costs to implement the Swimming Pools Barrier Inspection Program,” Cr Fowler said. “This is not a money-making exercise for Council, but a program aimed at saving lives.”

If your pool fence complies, a certifi cate of compliance can be issued which is valid for three years.

You can also carry out a self assessment of your swimming pool barrier fence to assist with compliance, before a Council inspection. Checklists can be found at swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au/checklists.

Pools must be also be registered on the NSW Swimming Pool register. This includes pools in private residences, as well as pools at tourist accommodation and multi-occupancy dwellings.

Registration is free. Go to swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au. For more

information contact Penrith Council’s Swimming Pool Administration Offi cer

PARENTS CORNERMONEY MATTERS

Want your Kids to Move Out?Four diff erent ways to help your kids enter the property market

With over 30% [1] of adult children still living at home it’s no wonder parents may have to consider working until they are 70!

The challenge of home ownership for young Australians is an enormous issue. However the consequences for parents are just as concerning. Studies show 46% of parents were happy to relinquish their empty-nest lifestyle and let children live at home longer if it meant children could save more money for a home deposit.

In many instances this means parents have to re-direct some of their discretionary spending, take less expensive holidays, defer purchases and work longer simply to cope with the fi nancial responsibility of having the children live at home.

Parents need to consider the hidden costs associated with this option and the potential consequences on their future retirement lifestyle. So what are some of the solutions? Let’s take a closer look at these options, contact us for more details about the pros and cons that come with them.

Gifts

Parents can contribute fi nancially to the deposit of a home for their children by providing the children with a lump sum of money.Supplemental Loans

Parents can provide a supplemental loan to their children with the intention that they repay. Some parents provide these additional fi nances with no interest.Invest in the Property with your Children

In this scenario, it is common practice for the parties to be ‘tenants in common’ rather than ‘joint tenants’. This also allows a diff erent ownership ratio to the normal 50/50 and an alternative ownership split that may not impact their FHOG entitlement. For example, the children may purchase 75% of the property and the parents purchase 25%.Acting as a Guarantor

Some lending institutions have what is known as a Family Pledge. This enables family members with equity in their own property to help their children with additional security, thereby allowing the child to borrow up to the full cost of the home.

Regardless of the option best suited for you and your children, all family fi nance lending arrangements should always be documented for clarity, security and peace of mind. When considering helping their children, parents need to understand possible consequences on their own retirement planning. These can be just as important as the children getting a foot in the property door.

If you would like more information on the options available to you to help your children get a head start in the property market, while protecting your own interests, please contact the offi ce for a confi dential discussion. [1] Pew research

Maternity Leave for KristieKristie is going on maternity leave from June 2014 to

January 2015. Kristie has had a wonderful pregnancy apart from a few early hiccups which have all sorted out. This will be Kristie’s fi rst child and she is proud to announce she is having a little boy! She is due early July and we are all very excited for the arrival! Check out our Facebook page for updates on Kristie.

New Members of the TeamOrchard Hills Veterinary Hospital continues to

grow. Amanda started in March 2014 and Stacey will be covering the maternity position. Lizzie has been working as part of the team for over a year, and has recently taken on more shifts.Amanda – Veterinary Nurse

Amanda began a career in Veterinary Nursing at an avian and exotic clinic in Newcastle in early 2011 and completed her Certifi cate IV in Veterinary Nursing in 2013. Amanda loves every aspect of veterinary nursing with a special interest in dentistry, orthopaedic surgery and puppy pre-school education.

At home Amanda has quite a selection of animals starting with her dogs ‘Hamish’ the Cairn Terrier, ‘Doug’ the West Highland White Terrier, as well as ‘Alfi e’ her long haired black cat and the latest addition to the family ‘Diago’ the Indian Ringneck Parrot.

Amanda is enjoying the move to Penrith from Newcastle and could not think of a better team of both Veterinarian’s and nurses to help her settle into a new clinic. Amanda is excited for her future years at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital.Stacey – Veterinary Nurse

Stacey has grown up in the Lower Blue Mountains area and in 2001 began her Veterinary Nursing career working at local veterinary clinics and gaining her Certifi cate IV Veterinary Nurse qualifi cation

at Richmond TAFE. She then pursued dreams of travel and working as a Veterinary Nurse in the UK and Canada. Stacey’s experience also includes working at specialist and referral veterinary practices, where she gained invaluable skills to help critically ill or injured companions.

Stacey is the newest member of the team, and is looking forward to getting to know the clients and their pets. While she is not greeting you at reception with a cheery smile Stacey can be found going for a run around the river or snowboarding down the slopes of Perisher.

Stacey has 4 cats running around her feet, Sage (an elderly black cat), Mia (a feisty tortie), Bricky (named after being found on a construction site at just one week

old and just couldn’t part with after hand rearing!) and Boots (one adorable and cuddly medium haired ginger kitty).Lizzie – Kennel Hand

Lizzie completed work experience at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in June 2012. Lizzie then joined our team as a Kennel Hand in June 2013. Lizzie is in the process of completing her Certifi cate II in Animal Science at TAFE, as well as her Higher School Certifi cate. She enjoys everything about being a Kennel Hand, learning lots and getting a head start on some nurse duties, as she wishes to go on to study Veterinary Nursing at TAFE. Lizzie has had many animals during her life time, at the moment she has two cats (Moo Cow and Missy), and a Labrador cross (Sonny).

“After a week of work experience, I never thought only a year later would I be working here at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, but I wouldn’t work anywhere else! Everyone here is always willing to help out and share their knowledge where ever possible.”

Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.

Want to achieve fl at toned abs before Summer?

My clients routinely lose weight and transform their bodies. You can do it too!

To achieve great abs is a winning combination of fat burning cardio, resistance training and clean eating. That’s it, Exercise and Eating!!

Your Exercise Routine: An eff ective exercise routine includes intense cardiovascular

training with eff ective resistance training. Are you doing this?Cardio exercise is all about maintaining a high level of

intensity. Unfortunately, a 30 minute walk isn’t a fat blasting workout. You need to push yourself!!

Resistance training is the second side to a fat burning workout. This means working your major muscle groups against challenging resistance in a way that stimulates your metabolism. The key is to fi nd the right intensity and to keep each muscle group guessing.

Your Diet: Diet is a big stumbling block for most people. If your diet is out of control then your abs will be too. You can’t trim your waist without trimming the junk from your diet. Start by keeping your total calories in check. Do you know how many calories you eat?

The best way to fi nd out is to record everything you eat for a few days. Tally the number of calories that you eat each day and do an evaluation—feel free to recruit me to help out with this part. Together we’ll chart improvements for your diet and adjust your calories for maximum results.

Do you want to fl atten and sculpt your abs once and for all? It’s time to decide that you really want it. Commit to yourself—you deserve it.

See me for fat-blasting workouts that deliver serious results. Together we will get you on a program that will melt the fat off your abs, exposing amazing shape and defi nition.
