NewLaboratoryDevelopmentandActivities

I designed, developed and direct the Center for Advanced Simulation and Optimization (CASO) Laboratory in ENG2‐323. The laboratory is used only for research and has 18 computers in Windows and Unix platforms which perform as a distributed simulation infrastructure integrated through the High Level Architecture/Runtime Infrastructure (HLA/RTI). Software available in these machines includes the HLA/RTI, SPEEDES, AnyLogic, Flexsim, Simio, Arena, CalPuff, ArcGIS, Rational Rose, and Poseidon.

In 2003, I advised a team of master students that won third place in the 2003 IIE/TEFEN National Industrial Engineering Competition. The team was formed by Alfredo Solarte, a master student at Georgia Tech, Topsy St. Matthew‐Daniel, a student at Stanford, and Dayana Cope, a student at UCF. These former undergraduate students learned to work as a team while they were at UCF and still can collaborate in difficult projects at a distance. I am proud that they asked me to be their advisor. I think it reflects well in my effectiveness as a teacher and on the impact I have in our students.

In 2000 and 2001, students from the University of Central Florida’s Industrial Engineering Department won the IIE/Rockwell Software Student Simulation Competition. I was the faculty advisor for both winning teams. The competition, sponsored by Rockwell Software and the Institute of Industrial Engineers, features teams from national and international universities. Each team is composed of three current undergraduate Industrial Engineering students. The teams have approximately eight weeks to develop their solution to a 'real‐world' situational case study using Rockwell Software's simulation software package, ARENA. A national panel of experts judges team entries and selects five teams to compete in the Annual National Conference of the Institute of Industrial Engineers. A panel of conference attendees selects the winner after a presentation by the student teams.

At the 2000 IIE Annual Conference in Cleveland, May 21‐21, 2000, a team of Industrial Engineering students formed by Dayana Espinal, Topsy St. Matthew‐Daniel, and Scott Vanderbeck took first place. Other finalists were U of Calgary, Florida International U, North Carolina State University, and Virginia Tech.

At the 2001 IIE Annual Conference in Dallas, May 20‐23, 2001, a team of UCF IE students formed by Vanessa Benavente, Scott Broadway, and Jasun Burdick took first place. The other finalists were Lehigh University, Louisiana State University, North Carolina State University, and The University of Arizona.

UCF is the only institution to win this competition twice.


ResearchAwards

In research, I can claim significant contributions and national recognition for the research that he has conducted over the last five years focusing on the integration of an array of simulation and non‐simulation models that support decision‐making at different levels of spaceport operations. To achieve this, Dr. Sepúlveda significantly contributed to the design and development of a unique simulation framework called the Virtual Test Bed (VTB) designed to handle at different levels of detail both in terms of time and in terms of physical units the different objects included in the simulation of complex systems.

Related to this work, I received a national award for best technical paper of the year (SAE, 2004), for the paper “A Distributed Environment for Analysis of Events Related to Range Safety,” by J. Sepulveda, L. Rabelo, and J. Compton, SAE 2004 Transactions, Journal of Aerospace, Vol. 113, July 2005, 1517‐1521, for which the authors received the 2004 Arch T. Colwell Merit Award. This Award was established by Arch Colwell to recognize authors of outstanding papers presented at SAE meetings. Papers are judged for their value as contributions to existing knowledge of mobility engineering, and primarily with respect to their value as an original contribution to the subject matter. This paper was selected as the best technical paper of 2004 from 2,677 which were published for SAE meetings during 2004. The paper presents a complete description of the VTB design, operations and results.

Another paper, “Disaster and prevention management for the NASA shuttle during lift‐off", published in the journal Disaster Prevention and Management: an International Journal, Vol 12 No. 2, was featured in the August 2006 Monthly Highlights on the Emerald website ‐ http://www.emeraldinsight.com/Insight/ Emerald publishes on average 450 new research articles and case studies each month. This article is one of only 10 noteworthy articles selected by the Managing Editors for inclusion on that month.

Also in relation to the VTB work, I was nominated by NASA for the 2005 State of Florida’s Governor's Award in Modeling & Simulation for the development of NASA Virtual Test Bed. Other finalists for the Award were Lockheed‐Martin Corp. and PEO STRI. (Orlando, Florida, November 29, 2005).

Dr. Sepúlveda’s research team is also recipient of the 2006 One NASA Peer Award (Agency level) for “outstanding contributions to the One NASA philosophy through inter‐center cooperation and collaboration.”
