KID AT HEARTWhat happens between being a kid and being an adult that makes values & needs change? kids and adults both face the same basic problems: stress, lack of focus, time management, & motivation. as i was exploring these sets of needs, it was interesting to see that there were no products that addressed both audiences.

Looking at desks, an area where issues occur for adults and children, the idea of utilizing a light timer began. With some sort of timer the idea of time management would allow the user to plan their time and ease their anxieties.

lights that are geared towards a specific age group look cartoon-y, over embellished, and lack versatility

lights that aren’t necessarily geared towards an age group are very functional and lack personality.

While addressing the needs of kids and adults i explored the new intersection of products on the market that cater to either adults with a youthful sensibility and a sense of refinement, or children that have parents who want to make them mini adults. i also wanted to explore the idea of emotional attachment, but not in the vein of kidrobot, but rather a generic form that would give a sense of encouragement

THE cITY & SToRIES

as a city, san Jose has a long, rich and diverse history. it is the birthplace of the California state university system, the home to many innovative companies such as Cisco, adobe systems, Bae systems and iBm. its only natural for the city of san Jose to be as innovative as the people residing within. san Jose’s latest endevor is the city’s green vision is a 15 year plan to turn the city into one of the country’s biggest clean technology cities. a solar powered product that improves the urban conditions of san Jose would inspire and aid in the city’s green initiative.

THE cHARAcTERSLooking at areas where there are mass amounts of people on the sidewalk these were some common factors:

- if there was a free bench that was unoccupied yet within walking distance people would rather sit there than with a person they don't know

- Benches that were slightly out of the way and/or shaded were always occupied

- if there was one person in the bus stop and it was just two people waiting, the second person would not sit down.

NATUREvS

after observing the streets, it became apparent that what people need is a sanctuary from their everyday grind. sitting under a tree was the experience that i began to reference, and the complex relationship between something as natural as a tree and as progressive as a city came into play.

FORMmanufactured through thermoforming and metal tube bending. this chair will give a nice spot to sit and read a book and there is space to store your book after

FoRmthe design for this chair came from a materials and process class. We had to make a chair which utilized a particular manufacturing process, in this case it was thermoforming

Page 29: Joseph Sanchez: Sample Work

FORMmanufactured through thermoforming and metal tube bending. this chair will give a nice spot to sit and read a book and there is space to store your book after

With thermoforming as the main manufacturing process, I wanted to highlight its unique properties. It displays the kind of draws and tolerances that can be achieved in the process. The front looks as if it was cut from a larger part to emphasize the industrial nature of the thermoforming. The chair would be a nice spot to sit and read a book and there is space to store your book after. The goal of the project is to redefine, redesign, and create a scale prototype

exploring the idea of thermoforming and its use of material, i was drawn to the aesthetic properties of plastics. in mass production, thermoforming is mostly used for translucent packaging. the idea of clear packaging and the idea of things on display were the main inspirations for redesign of the chair. the translucent nature of the material also reminded me of this idea of floating.

the result is a two-piece thermoformed chair. one half is an opaque plastic, with a translucent top. it gives the effect of floating and putting the user on display. the legs are tapering aluminum pipe, its slender nature adding to the airy feeling.

float is a chair that takes the concepts of mass production, manufacturing, exhibition and floating, to make a functional piece of furniture. With its translucent top and exposed interior, the user appears to be sitting on air. the model is painted zprint & translucent and white thermoformed styrene.

bAbY boomBoomers are pioneers. the have ignited and lead social change, revolutions, and forged a path to the time that we live in now. at the core of the generation, they are about keeping their appearances and lifestyle without sacrificing convieince. this is seen in most aspects of their lives, from the laws they have passed to products being created.

Page 39: Joseph Sanchez: Sample Work

oN REcoRDAfter doing some empathic research and getting in the mind of a baby boomer, I empathized with the fact that no one ever wants to feel like they were getting older. As an aging social pioneer that will not be able to retire, I looked for ways to be able to “retire” on a daily basis without retiring. music was the perfect outlet.

- music is one of the biggest aspect of a boomer’s life, from the Beatles to Blondie

- listening to music on a daily basis is proven to help people take care of their well being

- vinyl records are something that is multi-generational & collectable

Jim is an active boomer. recently divorced, his 2 kids are both married. His small construction company is thriving and he has sold half of it. However due to an unforeseen back injury he has been forced to slow down, from working on site to running the office. He is looking for new ways spend his time. referencing Bang & olufsen as a premium brand during his prime years, i used the language to dictate the future technologies and language of the object.

Beogram encore’s form is inspired by older Bang & olufsen’s design language. By juxtaposing primary shapes they create forms that dictate functionality, while artfully dealing with the media at hand. in this case the console is simple and understated allowing the record to shine.
