Installation photo of From Geisha to Diva: The Kimono of Ichimaru at the Kelowna Art Gallery.

I Must Be Streaming

In I Must Be Streaming, Jorden Doody investigates how contemporary culture responds to notions of the body in a digital age where illusion, escape, and distraction are at the forefront of our collective consciousness.

By combining new media technologies with traditional modes of craft, Doody’s installations blur the boundaries between the real and the virtual, the tactile and the imaginary. In this distorted world of oversized icons, visitors are invited to reflect on their own concepts of connectivity and consider the impacts these have on our relationships and our daily lives.

Jorden Doody is an interdisciplinary artist who examines the transitional spaces between tangible material and digital media. She is based in Kelowna and is currently pursuing an MFA at the UBC Okanagan.

From Geisha to Diva: The Kimono of IchimaruMarch 14 to October 11, 2020

The word geisha is made up of two characters, gei means ‘art’ or ‘accomplished’ and sha means ‘person.’ Therefore it can be translated as ‘accomplished person’ or ‘person who lives by the arts.’

The fascinating life of Ichimaru (1906-1997), one of the most famous geishas of the 20th Century, is told through this collection of her magnificent kimono and memorabilia. The exhibition features 34 kimono, 15 obi, in addition to a number of woodblock prints and personal items. Together, they help to draw the curtains back on the complexities of geishas and the depth of the role they played within Japanese society.

Organized and circulated by the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. Curated by Barry Till, Curator Emeritus of Asian Art.

Two Men Contemplating the Moon, Caspar David Friedrich, ca. 1825–30, oil on canvas. Photo courtesy of the Met Museum, NY.

Nothing to be done

Nothing to be done is a sculptural installation in the Gallery’s Rotary Courtyard space by Melany Nugent-Noble that takes reference from the stage set of Samuel Beckett’s two-act play, Waiting for Godot. The play, which was first performed in Paris in 1953, is about two characters—Vladimir and Estragon—who wait beneath a tree by a country road for Godot (who never arrives).

Both Beckett’s famous play and the installation draw inspiration from Caspar David Friedrich’s painting (circa 1820-25), titled Two Men Contemplating the Moon, which is shown above.

Visitors entering the open-air courtyard are encouraged to pause and take a moment in this refuge for the imagination—a focal point for contemplation where one has permission to let their mind wander towards adventure, possibility, and the unknown.

Melany Nugent-Noble is a Kelowna-based artist whose work responds to the political and social nature of public spaces. It takes various forms including community-focused installations, as well as art books made from public government documents and speeches.

Melanie Daniel, Only Four Degrees (detail), 2019, oil on canvas, 77 x 120 in. Courtesy of the artist.

Goin’ Where the Climate Suits My Clothes

Melanie Daniel relates her fear for humankind’s unhealthy relationship with the natural world in Goin’ Where the Climate Suits My Clothes. Through these large-scale paintings, works on paper, and delicate papier-mâché sculptures, Daniel imagines a planet on the brink of collapse from our chronic, longstanding disregard for its wellbeing. The people who populate her luminous scenes seem to be painfully aware of their difficult circumstances and have adopted various methods to cope with their altered surroundings. In Only Four Degrees, a lone figure sits amidst a desolate post-disaster landscape and attempts to create a power source—perhaps to make contact with others. Daniel’s bold and strangely beautiful works are cautionary, yet hopeful, in that their protagonists demonstrate the will to adapt and survive. Melanie Daniel was born in Victoria, BC and after living abroad she has relocated to Kelowna. Her work as been shown internationally, in the U.S., Canada, Israel, and Sweden.

Installation photo of puti kʷala – we are still here at YLW. Photo by Jordanna Marshall.

In his painting series puti kʷala – we are still here, interdisciplinary artist Sheldon Pierre Louis creates vibrant portraits that celebrate the beauty of the syilx/Okanagan Nation’s history and culture.

These colourful multi-layered canvases are rich with intricate filigree patterns and incorporate a mix of traditional and contemporary imagery. In them, we see generational snapshots—a grandfather teaching his granddaughter how to dig, two nieces posing for the camera, and a young girl with her drum.

Sheldon Pierre Louis is a member of the syilx Nation, a Councillor at Okanagan Indian Band, and a community leader whose work is influenced by his ancestral roots. He mentors youth from his own and surrounding communities and takes joy in the mutual inspiration fostered through these collaborations.
