Journalist for a Day – A 20-‐year Aventure Story
Journalist for a Day (Journaliste d’un Jour) invites as many as 1500 secondary students to create and market special editions of the local newspaper in five Alsace towns in a fast-paced week-long regional event.
Participating students are given the tools (computers, telephones, etc.) to do the reporting and photojournalism. Others must devise a marketing operation, such as free massages or coffee. All are coached by newspaper personnel.
During a week, 100,000 copies of Journalist for a Day are printed every evening and distributed the next morning free throughout public areas of five participating towns of region by the students themselves. The newspaper unit is considered to fit into the curriculum as it teaches students to use and write correct French in an out-of-school setting.
At the end of the project, the newspaper selected the best articles, photos and other contributions to be recognized with prizes.

Why we lasted so long -‐
1/ A durable relaMonship with our partners It’s a self-‐financing opera8on thanks to the strong implica8on we have built for our partners, both private companies and ins8tu8ons.
2/ A durable relaMonship with local authoriMes We have been able to nuture close rela8onships with the various levels of government at both the city and regional level who see the educa8onal and ci8zenship value of the opera8on.
3/ A durable relaMonship with the young themselves All throughout the 20 years, young people have enthusias8cally embraced the ac8vity because it implicates them in the memorable ac8vity of crea8ng and dissemina8ong the news. We believe such ac8ons are crucial if we want to contributes to the habit of being interested in and reading daily news, whether in print or on the web.

The four pillars of the opera8on
Press -‐ CommuniMes – Companies -‐ Educators
1/ Presse -‐ Le journal L’Alsace The daily, L’Alsace, acts as the strong educator by helping the regions young adults familiarize themselves with the world of the press in ways that address, concretely, ques8ons of freedom of expression and freedom of the press. L’Alsace enlivens the life of the schools and offers the students exposure to the professional world of journalism, marke8ng, prin8ng.
2/ CommuniMes – The Alsace region and its towns as partners The regional goverment finances and manages the region’s schools and finds this project a logical element of the educa8on.
For the partner ci8es, such as Strasbourg, Mulhouse and Colmar, the event is a powerful ins8tu8onal communcia8on tool because young people populate and enliven their downtowns for a week as they write about these same towns in their reports.

The four pillars of the opera8on (con8nued)
Press -‐ CommuniMes – Companies -‐ Educators
3/ Companies -‐ Crédit Mutuel bank and the SNCF rail company The companies get access thanks to Journalist for a day to the market of young adults (ages 16 and 17) in a per8nent and intelligent manner. This form of educa8onal sponsoring allows them to reach a target group that has liele tolerance for messages that are too commercial
4/ EducaMon – District [l’Académie de Strasbourg] and schools of the Alsacian region The programme forms an integral part of the curriculum, allowing students to experience high-‐quality connec8ons to the world of business, of wri8ng, of the press and of journalism. For a week, upper econdary students (ages 16 and 17) are plunged into the world of journalism, marke8ng and events. Supported by professionals, they get unprecedented access to prominent figures (including the country’s president, prime minister and minister of educa8on) for interviews they could never have had outside the context of Journalist for a Day.
