WELCOME TO ECUADOR ...a country of contrasts

Ecuador is located in the northwestern area of South America, precisely in the Middle of the World. Due to its geographical position on the Equator Line, this small country is known as a land of contrasts and is also one of the most bio diverse on the planet. In a single day you could take an early morning walk or cruise in the Amazon, drive up through a valley of active volcanoes and past verdant cloud forests before winding down to the Pacific coast in time for a seafood dinner. This beautiful country has an ample variety of climates and landscapes ranging from charming beaches at sea level to snow-capped peaks reaching 6,300 metres high. From the exuberant coastal region to the imposing Andes Mountains and onto the Amazon rainforest, it is jam-packed with wonders. Nature soars with volcanoes and delves deep in the jungles. You will find ancestral cultures living in harmony with the environment yet maintaining their own cultures and lifestyles. Then, only 1,050 km away from the continent lie the amazing Galapagos Islands, one of the World’s most fascinating and scientifically important places. Known for its incredible biodiversity many animals found here are found nowhere else in the world. The beautiful landscapes and volcanic islands are an example of nature at its finest. We want to help you experience the magic of Ecuador, to be immersed in the diversity, be charmed by the locals and be astounded by the wildlife.

We hope our brochure will encourage you to start your own Ecuador journey with us.

We hope you enjoy reading it and look Forward to talking to you soon.

The San Rafael Waterfall is the tallest in Ecuador, with a drop of 131m, and the 24th largest in the world based on volume. It’s on the border of Napo and Sucumbios provinces, 25 km from the city of Tena. There are many hydroelectric projects underway in Ecuador including one up river from these falls. The dam is expected to be completed in 2016 and when the plant is in full operation it will undoubtedly alter the flow that feeds the San Rafael waterfall. Go soon to see it in all its might.

THE FOUR WORLDS OF ECUADOR

Each of Ecuador’s four zones has its own weather pattern, mainly due to altitude. Jun - Sep is the dry season. Oct - May is generally the wet season with each having its good and ‘less good’ attributes. Luckily for us Ecuador is still not overly crowded so you’ll always be able to find a room, or cabin. It never feels overcrowded and is great throughout the year, so whenever you visit, you won’t be disappointed.

Relaxation is the word here. Afro-

Ecuadorian cultures dance to

marimba music in the north. The

central region has white sandy

beaches, and national parks. In

the south you’ll find resorts and

Ecuador’s largest city, Guayaquil.

LOW - THE COAST

Soaring mountains and colourful

locals give a special atmosphere

to the region. History abounds:

sacred sites and buildings, mix

with colonial haciendas UNESCO

cities of Cuenca and Quito are

matched by fertile valleys and

cloud forest mountains.

HIGH - THE ANDES

COAST: The coast is sunnier during Dec-May with high humidity and bright skies during the day with rain in the early evening. Jun-Sep has overcast skies that promise rain which never arrives. The cooler air temperature from June through September attracts whales and dolphins to the waters off the coast.

WEATHER AND WHEN TO GO

ANDES: There are two obvious seasons: dry and wet. The dry season runs from Jun-Sept. The wet season from Oct-May. The weather is coolest in the dry but only slightly more than the rest of the year. It can get quite cool because of the altitude (2,850m), averaging a high of 19°C and a low of 10°C.

GALAPAGOS ISLANDS: Hot and rainy or dry and windy. Sea level almost desert-like with a high of 21°C and the highlands a low of 14°C. Jun-Sep is dry, with cooler air and water although winds that can make the seas a bit bumpy. Oct-May is warmer both in and above the water, with periodic light rain almost daily.

AMAZON: It’s called a rainforest and it rains all year, but more from late December through April, and less in October through mid December. The rain raises the water level by 10 metres allowing access deeper into the forest. The temperature in the jungle can reach 27° to 32°C during the day; it’s a bit cooler at night.

Covering nearly half of Ecuador the iconic Amazon region is known for its ethnic groups and rich diversity of flora and fauna. The north is favoured by travellers, with the south being more for serious adventurists.

QANTAS flies non-stop from Sydney to Santiago 4 times a week and LATAM flies 7 days a week, with a short stop in Auckland. QANTAS and LATAM are both One World partners. This means you can purchase a ticket with one airline and fly on the other if there are seats available. Don’t worry though – we will explain it all when planning your trip.

LATAM was formed in 2012 when LAN and TAM merged, combining their networks which now covers over 115 cities in South America. In 2016 they will complete their merge by rebranding both airlines to LATAM, so you will start to see the LATAM livery rolled out across South America. Buying a LATAM airline ticket to South America gives you up to 50% discount on flights within South America, making them the best option. Our close relationship with LATAM ensures we have great value airfares in both economy and business and are experts in booking them.

In 2015 LATAM intrduced the Boeing 787 Dreamliner between Sydney and Santiago. This new aircraft features:

• Larger windows with auto-dimming and dynamic lighting to create a better atmosphere.

• Aerodynamic technology to reduce the impact felt by passengers due to turbulence.

• 30% more storage space for carry-on luggage.• New air humidification techniques to significantly reduce

fatigue and dryness associated with long trips.• Noise reducing technology inside and outside the aircraft.

TRAVELLING TO SOUTH AMERICATHE FASTEST WAY TO GET FROM AUSTRALIA TO SOUTH AMERICA IS TO FLY FROM SYDNEY TO SANTIAGO IN CHILE, AND THEN CONNECT TO OTHER CITIES. LATAM AND QANTAS FLY FROM SYDNEY TO SANTIAGO WITH CONNECTIONS AVAILABLE FROM ALL AUSTRALIAN STATES. AIR NEW ZEALAND FLY FROM AUCKLAND TO BUENOS AIRES, ALSO WITH CONNECTIONS FROM ALL OVER AUSTRALIA.

• Arrival and departure transfers where mentioned.• All land transportation, and cruises/ferries where mentioned.• Good quality, well located hotels with private bathrooms.• Breakfast daily. Other meals as listed.• English speaking guided touring. • Prepayable entrance fees. Some National Parks are pay as you go. We’ll let you know if this applies to you.• 24 hour assistance by our trusted partners in each country.• Prices shown are ‘from’ prices and are subject to availability and seasonal price increases. Prices are valid to end 2016.• Please see our website for full terms and conditions.

Flights are NOT included. Some internal flights can often be included with your International ticket to save you money. We will discuss this with you and advise the best option for your trip.

Most people convince a partner or friend to travel with them so prices shown are per person, based on two people travelling together and sharing a room. If you are looking for some solitude we can plan a trip just for you. Most of these trips are suggestions and can be tailored as you wish. We welcome larger groups and can often secure discounts for them. To keep things simple all the itineraries in this brochure have our signature Forward inclusions.

We think planning travel is just like cooking. We choose the best ingredients then creatively find ways to showcase their highlights and cook it fresh for each diner. (Many places in Ecuador may be old, but our journeys are fresh). We’ll talk to you to find out how hungry you are and what flavours you like, so we can then create the perfect recipe tailored to your ‘travel buds’. In keeping with our cooking theme here is our menu, with the symbols below to help follow the recipes. ‘Icing on the cake’, and ‘Side dishes’ will help you add your own Forward Flavour to each itinerary. We hope you like our way of thinking.

All our journeys are customised for each person, so our style of travel is really your style. We’ll discuss how you like to travel, the type of hotels and touring you prefer as well as how energetic you want to be. We’ll then make suggestions to suit your preferences. We don’t pigeon hole you by star ratings, instead we discuss your preferences and match properties to suit. The hotels used here are mainly good quality 3.5-4 star, well located with local style. We also have fantastic indulgent places to mix it up when suitable.

Located within the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, the lodge was built in partnership with familes of the Siona Community as the most eco-friendly lodge in the Cuyabeno National Park.

The idea is to respect the environment and let nature maintain its natural course. The lodge has two 15m high towers so you can see, hear and experience nature and the birds from high.

As well as the full range of Amazon activities, there are many community engagement options. You can join in the daily life of the Siona commu-nity to learn their customs and traditions. Your stay includes transport from Coca airport (2 hours by boat and 40 minutes by foot), all meals and your choice of activities.

THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS

ALL YEAR Dry season is Jul to Dec, and wet season is Jan to June, but don’t worry, the highlands receive more moisture from mist than rain. 4-15 DAYSA week is generally the most popular stay in the islands, but shorter stays work well when combined with other places, especially if you just want to experience them. Cruises are regulated to help protect the islands and boats cannot revisit sites within 14 days. Most cruises operate on a 15 day cycle, broken down into 4, 5, and 8 day sectors. If you have the time we recommend an 8 day cruise to get a really good insight, but shorter trips will still give you a taste of it. If you’d prefer to sleep on dry land, we have land based options as well.

THE ISLANDSChoosing which islands you want to visit can be stressful, so don’t worry about it - everywhere is fabulous. Wildlife is spread throughout the islands with the famous marine iguanas, sea lions, blue footed boobies and Frigate birds being found on most islands.

HOTEL OR BOAT This is about your personal preference, desired comfort and budget. Boats generally cost more per day, but can take you to some islands and sites not accesible if staying on land, but most of the wildlife can be seen on day trips from Santa Cruz, San Cristobal and Isabela. Finding the cruise that goes where you want, when you want, can be tricky so planning ahead is key. We have been working with our local tour operator to come up with a new option where you travel by boat to each island then stay on land. You can read about this exciting new trip on page 18.

The nineteen islands in the isolated Galapagos archipelago lying 960kms from mainland Ecuador, are a haven for wildlife, inspiring Charles Darwin to write his theory on the Evolution of Species. They are fascinating in their diversity as each plant and much of the wildlife have adapted to each unique island. Wildlife is abundant and fearless, offering close encounters above and below the water where you can walk or swim within inches of numerous species. The Galapagos Islands are most famous for their role in nature. Today, much of the wildlife studied by Charles Darwin still thrives. Nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts flock to the islands for a chance to see these rare and beautiful creatures in their natural habitats.

ABOUT THE BOATS

Size, comfort, and the number 16 are the keys for boat choice, as shore excursions are capped at 16 passengers per guide. A 16 passenger boat will have one group, with a multilingual guide. Larger boats often have less people per group, and often have English only groups as they can divide groups by language. Larger ships have more space and facilities and are more stable, good to know if your sea legs are not very sturdy. Catamarans are very popular due to the double hull which gives great stability. There are many boats ranging from the budget “Tourist” class, through to indulgent “Luxury” class. We have shown a sample of them over the page, but have access to many more.

ABOUT THE HOTELS / LODGESPuerto Ayora on Santa Cruz and Puerto Vilamil on Isabela are the main towns with tourist accommodation. Floreana and San Cristobal also have some options. There is also the Island Safari lodge on Santa Cruz, and Iguana Crossing in Isabela for a more confortable stay.

WHAT IS WHERE? WHERE IS WHAT?Wildlife and attractions are spread through-out the islands so you will see plenty wher-ever you choose to go. • Each island has its own unique environ-ment, and as Darwin famously observed, some creatures don’t travel (unlike us) and are found only on specific islands. If your heart is set on seeing particular flora or fauna it is important to know where they call home. • Each island has several sites for visitors and not all sites will have each species listed in the below guide. This is especially true on Isabela which has a varied terrain. Be sure to let us know what you hope to see so we can find the best match for you. This is nature at its most amazing and wild, so whilst we can plan extremely well we can’t guarantee the wildlife will follow the recipe.
