Polar bears are kings on land, revered and feared by all, whilst the seas thrive with fabled creatures. The narwhal with its unicorn like tusk, and walruses ply the waters year round. In summer killer whales show their softer side, coming to the shallows for a gentle tummy rub on time rounded pebbles. The vastness of the Arctic magnfies the scenery and wildlife far and wide, creating distinct and different zones. The wild, remote Canadian Arctic is filled with Inuit settlements and tales of brave exploration by man and mammals. Dazzling scenery stretches to the horizon and the definition of ‘frontier’ needs no words.Greenland’s ‘iceberg factory’ annually pushes out 20 million tonnes of brilliant white skyscrapers tinged with turquoise, and soaring cathedrals with crystal spires. Svalbard, between Norway and the North Pole is more compact, luring headline hunting explorers for centuries and seabirds by the million. This is the realm of the majestic polar bear, sitting regally on top of the food chain.

NORWEGIAN ARCTIC - SVALBARD Svalbard is a more compact destination so you don’t need to cruise far to see scenery, history and wildlife. Located less than 1,000km from the North Pole it is the best place for polar bears. We focus on the north and west, being the most interesting, diverse and wildlife rich parts of the archipelago.

GREENLANDThe largest, non-continental island in the world, and its least populated. Greenland is a vast, remote land with a unique culture. It brings ancient traditions to a modern world. Brilliantly colourful villages dot the whiteness. The massive icecap produces all of the Arctic’s soaring icebergs.

ICELAND A tiny country with a population of a mere 250,000. Iceland offers incredible scenery and unparalleled geological attractions. Iceland is where glaciers reach for the skies and deep blue mountain lakes fill steep valleys and are surrounded by sharp green peaks on all sides. Hidden hot springs in secluded valleys far far away from civilisation, will relax and calm you as you take in the spectacular views.

THE NORTHWEST PASSAGEIn the 15C explorers started searching for a much hoped for passage through the Canadian Arctic linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, to open up trading routes. Many endeavours met with disaster. In 1850 a way was finally discovered, and in 1906, Roald Amundsen completed the first passage from Greenland to Alaska.

THE FORWARD ARCTIC GUIDE

Anyone fortunate enough the see the lights will be beaming with the memories for a long time. They’re like a huge theatre curtain flowing across the sky with colours ranging from yellow to green to pink, to blue, with a million stars providing a spectacular background. Luckily Yellowknife in Canada has some of the best in mid Aug-Sep. Perfect to add to an Arctic trip.

POLAR BEARS, THE KINGS OF THE ARCTICThe hope of seeing these majestic animals lures most people north. Being predominantly predatory hunters they are usually spread far and wide, making finding them equivalent to an African game safari. Svalbard is great due to its remoteness and limited human population, and Canda has some great hotspots too, as Rose discovered recently. Churchill on the shore of Canada's Hudson Bay is the best land vantage point, although only for 6 weeks a year. We think the best way to see polar bears is by ship where you can go to them rather than hope that they will come to you.

LIFE ON BOARD A ONE OCEAN EXPEDITION

Once you board the ship you leave the every day world behind and merge into the extraordinary. You feel right at home for the duration of your voyage during which comfort and safety are top priorities. Our expedition team will deliver presentations to educate and inform you about all things Arctic, including the history and the wildlife you will likely meet. Days on deck are spent eagerly scanning the ocean for whales, and the sky for seabirds. Announcements are made over the PA system when sightings are made. The captain usually slows down the ship so we can enjoy the spectacle.

We aim to have at least two ‘Zodiac’ excursions each day. Some may be cruising around enjoying the playful wildlife or exploring glaciers and icebergs up close. Some will be shore landings where you can go on short or long walks with your expert leaders. We will have visits to Inuit settlements and historic sites to fully appreciate the diversity of the region.

13 AUG. EDMONTON Arrive in Edmonton and make your way to the Fairmont Macdonald for you pre night accommodation and expedition briefing.

14 AUG. ARCTIC - RESOLUTE (BLD)Our charter flight takes us to Resolute, a remote outpost above the Arctic Circle, and a strategic post during the Cold War. Meet our expedition team and start with a zodiac ride to the ship. After a welcome cocktail, we weigh anchor and depart in the early evening.

15 AUG. BEECHEY ISLAND (BLD) Beechey Island holds great historic importance in the story of the Northwest Passage. It is here that Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated expedition spent winter in 1845 before disappearing into the icy vastness, sparking an incredible series of search expeditions. The mystery of what happened to Franklin was partially solved in September 2014, when a joint expedition found the lead ship, HMS Erebus, with One Ocean Expeditions playing a vital role in the discovery. A visit to the grave markers on a remote windswept beach is a perfect and chilling start to our own expedition. We visit the towering bird cliffs of Prince Leopold Island, an important migratory bird sanctuary, home to several hundred thousand birds. It is one of the most

significant bird sanctuaries in the whole of the Canadian Arctic and makes for fantastic zodiac cruising. The sea ice around Prince Leopold Island is a great place for spotting seals, which usually means we could find polar bears.

16 AUG. SOMERSET ISLAND (BLD) Named for the British naval vessel abandoned in 1825. Her crew unloaded provisions to the beach. Four years later this cache saved the starving Ross expedition on its return from the North Pole in 1829. This is an exciting location for history buffs and for many it will be the defining moment of our expedition.

17 AUG. FORT ROSS – BELLOT STRAIT (BLD) The historic site of Fort Ross is a former Hudson’s Bay Company fur trading outpost. Fascinating archaeological sites tell a story of more than a thousand years of habitation by the Inuit and their predecessors. A transit of the narrow Bellot Strait is a thrilling experience as the currents roar through the channel. We are now in the heart of the Northwest Passage, and the stirring waters provide abundant food for many marine mammals, including harp and bearded seals, narwhals and whales. The Captain and Officers skills are on full display during this exciting day of Arctic navigation.

This voyage will appeal to both lovers of wildlife and the dramatic history of early polar exploration. We will trace the routes of the early explorers who sailed – and perished – in these waters as they sought a way through the fabled Northwest Passage. Our itinerary includes a visit to one of the largest migratory bird sanctuaries in the world, and we enjoy frequent sightings of seals as well as beluga whales. The mythical narwhal inhabits these waters, and we also hope to encounter polar bears at special locations that we have discovered over the years.

18 AUG. PRINCE OF WALES ISLAND (BLD) We cross the Franklin Strait and arrive at Conningham Bay on the shore of Prince of Wales Island. This is a known hotspot for polar bears, that come to feast on beluga whales, often caught in the rocky shallows. It is common to find the shoreline littered with whale skeletons – and very healthy looking polar bears!

19 AUG. SIR JOHN FRANKLIN (BLD) Enter Franklin territory in Victoria Strait where history surrounds us. On Victory Point a lifeboat left abandoned, pieces of copper and scattered iron tell a story of a desperate race in a search for a rescue that never came. We pass very near the location of the wreck of HMS Erebus.

20 AUG. PASELY BAY (BLD)This bay, on the Boothia Peninsula is where the St. Roch spent a winter in 1942 frozen into the sea ice. The ship was the first Canadian vessel to ever transit the Northwest Passage.

21 AUG. FRANKLIN STRAIT, PEEL SOUND (BLD) We’ll track north through the Franklin Strait and into Peel Sound, known for its heavy sea ice concentrations. We now know that Franklin sailed his two expedition ships through Peel Sound in the summer of 1846.

22 AUG. ASTON BAY (BLD)We explore in the zodiacs and aim to make a shore landing searching for wildlife. This evening, the Captain joins us for dinner and the chance to reflect on what has been a superb 10 days of exploration in this pristine Arctic wilderness.

23 AUG. DISEMBARK - EDMONTON (B)By morning we are at anchor in Resolute and make our way ashore by zodiac for the charter flight to return us to Edmonton where our journey comes to an end.

THE FRANKLIN EXPEDITION Sir John Franklin and his crew of 129 disappeared trying to navigate the Northwest Passage in 1845. They had ‘wintered’ on Beechey Island before being trapped in ice; they were never sighted again. Many searches to ‘rescue’ them were launched. More ships and men were lost looking for Franklin than the number lost in his expedition. In 2014 a combined search involving One Ocean Expeditions, found Franklin’s lead ship, the “HMS Erebus”. Now our trips will take you very close to this actual site.

Located on the southern shores of Victoria Island. Enjoy a walking tour of the town and then board our expedition ship, the Akademik Ioffe. Excitement is in the air as we enjoy a welcome cocktail and cast off, bound for the fabled Northwest Passage. DAY 3. NORTHWEST PASSAGEAs we chart a course into the Northwest Passage, our onboard presentation series begins and we delve into the tale of the Franklin expedition and the mystery of what happened. We aim to visit Victory Point, travelling very near the actual location of the wreck of HMS Erebus, while learning about the quest for exploration that eventually opened up the Arctic. Experts agree that the second of Franklin’s lost ships, HMS Terror, is likely to be in this vicinity.DAY 4. CONNINGHAM BAYArriving at Conningham Bay we find one of the most remarkable wildlife sites in the Arctic. A hotspot for polar bears who come here to feast on Beluga whales.DAY 5. BELLOT STRAITToday we transit the narrow passage of Bellot

Strait. The mixing of waters in this strait provides an abundant food source for marine mammals, and we will keep our eyes peeled for harp seals, bearded seals and even polar bears. DAY 6. BEECHEY ISLANDBeechey Island is of great historic importance. It is here that Sir John Franklin’s ill-fated expedition spent its last ‘comfortable’ winter in 1845 before disappearing into the icy vastness. A trip ashore at Beechey Island to visit the grave markers on a remote windswept beach gives one pause to wonder on the bravery (or foolhardiness) of these pioneering explorers, as they sought a way through the barren, frozen landscape.DAY 7. LANCASTER SOUNDCruising the coastline of Devon Island, we are now in the waters of Lancaster Sound – a rich, bio-diverse region often referred to as the wildlife ‘super highway’ of the Arctic. Massive volumes of water from Baffin Bay to the east, Beaufort Sea to the west, and the archipelago of islands to the north combine to make a rich cocktail of nutrients supporting an abundance of Arctic wildlife. DAY 8. SIRMILIK NATIONAL PARKWe sight the wild north coast of Baffin Island and navigate through Navy Board Inlet. The vast landscapes of Sirmilik National Park surround us as we approach the remote Inuit community of Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet). A highlight will be a visit

BAFFIN ISLANDLeaving the rugged coastline of Baffin Island, our crossing of Baffin Bay allows us time to slow down and reflect on the beauty and experiences we have shared. DAY 11. JACOBSHAVN ICEFJORDIf one word could sum up today’s experience it would be ‘ice’. Truly one of the wonders of the world, the Jacobshavn Icefjord – a UNESCO World Heritage site - spews giant tabular icebergs out into Disko Bay. Our Captain and officers are skilled ice navigators and our ship has one of the highest ice ratings of any vessel exploring Arctic waters.DAY 12. SISIMIUTWe will explore the fjord behind the town of

Sisimiut before going ashore to explore this beautiful location. Characterized by colourful local houses, the town features a towering granite peak as a backdrop. We hope to meet a few of the traditional Greenlandic kayakers and to see a demonstration of ‘Eskimo rolling’ by one of the former Greenland kayak champions. DAY 13. SONDRE STROMFJORDOne of the world’s longest fjords, Sondre Stromfjord towers above the ship as we sail up it. We plan to venture into some of the small side fjords that we can zodiac into and explore on foot or by kayak. Major geologic and geomorphologic features will surround us and we hope to find muskox along the shores of the fjord as well. Soaring high above us will be the white-tailed sea eagle, riding the thermals off the ridges. There are fantastic opportunities for hiking.DAY 14. DISEMBARK. KANGERLUSSUAQOur journey through the Arctic is all but complete as we disembark the ship in Kangerlussuaq and make our way to the airport and a charter flight returns us to Ottawa.

DAY 5. SUNSHINE FJORD Sunshine Fjord straddles the Arctic Circle at 660 degrees, 33 minutes north of latitude. Depending on the weather, we might cruise across the Circle on the ship, cross it in the zodiac boats or cross the circle on foot. DAY 6. AUYUITTUQ NP AND QIKIQTARJUAQ Auyuittuq NP’s landscape is dominated by steep rugged mountain scenery, extensive glacial systems and powerful rivers. DAY 7. ISABELLA BAY – NIGINGANIQ NATIONAL WILDLIFE AREA Isabella Bay is an important summer habitat and feeding area for endangered bowhead whales. Polar bears, ringed seals, Canada geese, snow geese and narwhal are also commonly sighted.DAY 8. DAY 1. LOUISBOURG, NOVA SCOTIAWelcome to Nova Scotia, transfer to your hotel.DAY 2. LOUISBOURG, NOVA SCOTIA Our adventure begins in the historic port town of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia. First visited in 1597 by the English, the town was fortified in 1713 by the French in recognition of its strategic maritime location. During the 18th century, Louisbourg was the third busiest seaport in North America. We board the ship in the late afternoon. DAY 3. GROS MORNE NP, NEWFOUNDLAND This morning we are anchored off the tiny fishing community of Trout River, the access point into Gros Morne National Park. Our zodiacs take us ashore and we are transferred by bus for our visit to the World Heritage-listed Tablelands. This incredible location is noted for its unique geology and exceptional scenery. Here, the Earth’s mantle is exposed on the surface – pushed up over millions of years by the movement of tectonic plates. DAY 4. L’ANSE AUX MEADOWS, NEWFOUNDLAND Today tells a story a thousand years in the making. We board the zodiacs for a short cruise to the rocky shoreline. A millennium ago, Viking long-ships would have been found along this same beach. L’Anse aux Meadows is one of Canada’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

DAY 5. BATTLE HARBOUR, NEWFOUNDLAND Battle Harbour marks our arrival into the province of Labrador. We venture ashore to explore the restored fishing, whaling, commercial buildings found in this remote community. The colourful buildings make for fantastic photographic subjects amid the backdrop of breathtaking coastal views. DAY 6. HOPEDALE, NEWFOUNDLAND The ancient rocks of the Canadian Shield (the exposed portion of the Earth’s crust) cradle the small coastal hamlet of Hopedale. This remarkable geological feature, estimated to be up to 4-billion-years-old greets us as we sail through narrow channels and weigh anchor off Hopedale. DAY 7. HEBRON, NEWFOUNDLAND Today we enjoy a visit to the historic town of Hebron and the Moravian missionaries, considered one of the most historically significant mission-built structures in the entire province. We will hope to meet Buddy and Jenny, Nunatsiavut Government ambassadors, who have been looking after the historic site for years. They have a fascinating story to tell. DAY 8. TORNGAT MOUNTAINS NP, LABRADOR We will sail into Saglek Fjord, the southern gateway to the Torngat Mountains National Park Reserve. The park features breathtaking

fjords, remnant glacial systems and stunning landscapes. The Inuktitut word Torngat, means “place of spirits” and the Torngat Mountains represent a very spiritual connection to the Inuit spirit world. Polar bears hunt seals along the coast, and caribou herds cross paths as they migrate to and from their calving grounds. There are some terrific hiking opportunities here to explore the area on foot and along the shoreline in the zodiacs. Wildflowers are spectacular when in bloom and bears feast on local berries. DAY 9. NACHVAK FJORD, LABRADOR Nachvak Fjord is exceptionally beautiful. The fjord is deep and narrow and stretches more than 20 kilometres. The rocky walls of the fjord soar almost 900 meters above us at several points. Many species migrate through the area during the short boreal summer. Numerous seal species may be encountered including ring, hooded, harp and harbour seals. Minke whales have been known to linger in the fjords, while larger species, including fin and humpback, tend to stay offshore. An outstanding location for landscape photography with endless subjects.DAY 10. BUTTON ISLANDS, NUNAVUT As we reach the far northern stretches of coastal

Labrador, we learn of the remarkable events at Martin Bay. Later in the day, we visit the Button Islands before sailing into southern Davis Strait. Named after Thomas Button who explored the area in 1612, the islands are in the middle of the upwelling of nutrients on the edge of the continental shelf. This action makes it a magnet for thousands of seabirds and other marine mammals. DAY 11. MONUMENTAL ISLAND, NUNAVUT Today we will sail across the mouth of Frobisher Bay and make landfall on Monumental Island. Here we are on the lookout for both polar bears and walrus that live around the island in an uneasy truce. We enjoy our final zodiac cruise here and tonight we reflect on the last 10-days of exploration while enjoying a sumptuous farewell dinner, attended by the Captain of the ship. During the night the ship will negotiate the narrow channels of Frobisher Bay on the way to our disembarkation point, Iqaluit, the capital city of Nunavut. DAY 12. IQALUIT, NUNAVUT We bid farewell to our crew and disembark the ship by zodiac and transfer to the airport for our flight back to Ottawa.

DAY 1. LONGYEARBYENArrive in Longyearbyen and transfer to the hotel for your included pre-cruise accomodation.

DAY 2. ISFJORDENToday we embark Longyearbyen and sail out into Isfjorden during the early evening. With almost 24 hours of daylight at this time of the year, we enjoy the views from the outer decks of the ship as we depart. We meet our fellow passengers and the expedition team during an introductory briefing and enjoy a welcome dinner as we set sail.

DAY 3. BOURBONHAMNABeluga whales are frequently seen as they transit the narrow sound near Bourbonhamna. It is estimated there are approximately five to ten thousand belugas in the Svalbard population. On our shore excursion, an old hunting cabin and other artifacts are points of interest. We will also hope to catch a glimpse of dozens of reindeer that inhabit the area.

DAY 4. LILLIEHOOK GLACIERThe Lilliehook Glacier is an incredible sight. The face stretches almost seven kilometers across and has a height of around 80-meters. Viewed from the ship or on a zodiac cruise you come to appreciate the enormous scale of our surroundings. The area is home to numerous

bird colonies and a variety of different species. As we cruise the dark waters, we are always on the lookout for bearded and ringed seals, both species known to frequent this fjord.

DAY 5. MONACO GLACIERNo trip along the north coast of Spitsbergen would be complete without a visit to Monaco Glacier. A wide glacier face at the head of the fjord makes for spectacular kayaking and zodiac cruising. The coastal plain near the mouth of Liefdefjorden offers superb hiking and is often a great place to spot polar bears that come here to hunt for ringed seals or feed on birds’ eggs.

DAY 6. PHIPPSOYAAt 81° north latitude, Phippsoya is just 540 nautical miles from the North Pole. The high ice classification of our ship allows us to approach the edge of the pack ice in safety and comfort. Because of its proximity to the permanent Arctic ice pack, Phippsoya offers the potential for great polar bear viewing. In recent seasons we have enjoyed excellent encounters with polar bears in this vicinity.

DAYS 7 – 8. HINLOPEN STRAITWe enter the main channel separating Svalbard’s two main islands. In Hinlopen Strait, the bird cliffs at Alkefjellet are nearby

Murchison Fjord is a wonderful place to kayak or zodiac cruise between the islands. There are some excellent hiking routes here, affording us breathtaking views.

DAY 9. FUGLESANGENOYAFuglesangenoya is home to a large dovekie colony. Nearby is the old whaling station of Smeerenburg, literally translated as ‘Blubber Town’. As we hike the shoreline of the old station, we learn about the importance of whaling in the discovery and exploration of the Svalbard archipelago. The blubber ovens stand as a reminder to this harsh industry in an equally harsh environment.

DAY 10. PRINCE CHARLES ISLANDWe visit the walrus colony on Prince Charles Island and hope to see these odd looking animals ashore. It is an incredible sight. Approaching from downwind can often confirm that walrus are ashore - the smell of a walrus haul out is quite ‘unique’! Tonight we celebrate our journey with a special dinner attended by the ship’s Captain.

DAY 11. RETURN TO LONGYEARBYENArriving back into Longyearbyen this morning, our journey comes to an end. A transfer into town is provided for those choosing to stay a few days, or to the airport for those departing.

Explore the coast of Spitsbergen. Be overwhelmed by glaciers, ice filled bays and fascinating plant life, while soaking up the stunning landscapes that surround us. DAY 1. ARRIVE LONGYEARBYENArrive in Longyearbyen and transfer to your hotel for included pre-cruise accommodation.DAY 2. ISFJORDENToday we embark on our expedition ship. With almost 24 hours of daylight at this time of the year, we enjoy the views from the outer decks of the ship as we sail through Adventfjorden and into Isfjorden. Entering the vast expanse of the Greenland Sea, our ship heads south, hugging the main island of Spitsbergen.DAY 3. BOURBONHAMNAWe arrive at the southerly Bourbonhamna – well known for the beluga whales that transit the narrow sound. We search for belugas from the ship and the zodiacs and plan our first shore excursion at Bourbonhamna. An old hunting cabin and other artefacts are points of interest during our hike to Ingebrigstenbukta. While wandering amongst these relics we hope to catch a glimpse of dozens of reindeer that inhabit the area.DAY 4. STORFJORDEN, KAPP LEEComing around the most southerly point of Spitsbergen, we push into the broad expanse of Storfjorden. Exploring Dolerittneset near Kapp Lee, the lush vegetation of this region is remarkable given we are at 70° North in latitude. This area has a large scattering of reindeer antlers and a plethora of ancient whalebones that makes the excursion so memorable.

DAY 5. HORNSUNDReturning to the west coast, glacier-filled bays surround us as we sail into Hornsund. The entire archipelago of Svalbard is a lesson in glaciology and our onboard guides will use our hikes and zodiac cruises to explain the formation of this fantastic landscape.DAYS 6-7. KROSSFJORDENThe rocky shores of Krossfjorden are home to numerous bird colonies and a range of species. We anchor the ship in a protected harbour, launch the zodiacs and cruise along the bird cliffs near the 14th of July Glacier. We watch out for bearded and ringed seals in the dark waters of the fjord. Lilliehook Glacier, at the northwestern head of Krossfjorden, is an incredible sight. The glacier face stretches almost seven kilometres and is around 80 meters high. Later in the day as we sail out, we might see the historic airship anchor pylon near the scientific community of Ny Ålesund. This remote outpost earned its place in aviation pioneering history as a starting point for North Pole aviation exploration. Nearby Smeerenburgfjorden has a four-hundred-year history of whaling.DAYS 8-9. PHIPPSOYAWe continue north and east up into the ice, hoping to cross the 80° north parallel. As we approach the ice edge the ship slows down and all hands are either on the bridge or out


the Monaco Glacier. This vast sweep of ice more than seven kilometers wide provides a fabulous backdrop for a zodiac cruise. Miles of ice face broken up by ice caves and tumbling seracs are a sight to behold as are the thousands of black-legged kittiwakes feeding on the upwelling of rich nutrients found near the sub-glacial outflow. A morning of cruising in the ice is best followed by a hike on the tundra. Red phalaropes, purple sandpipers and vibrant tundra provide plenty of viewing and photographic opportunities. As we explore the landscape on foot, the remains of fox traps and sun bleached seal bones speak of both human interaction and wildlife predation.DAY 12. ALKEHORNETAlkehornet, at the mouth of Isfjord, offers breathtaking views and an incredible tundra walk as we near the end of our adventure in Svalbard. Arctic fox can often be seen here, as well as reindeer. Towering above the site is a horn-shaped mount covered in guillemots and kittiwakes. Only as we approach we hear the chorus of thousands of birds, all singing at the same time. This evening we celebrate our journey with a special dinner attended by the ship’s Captain. It’s a great time to reflect on a wonderful voyage in this wild and remote place.DAY 13. RETURN TO LONGYEARBYENArriving back into Longyearbyen this morning, we disembark after breakfast and say farewell.

NINLOPEN STRAIT, MURCHISON FJORDFrom the ice edge we turn south into the main strait separating Svalbard’s two main islands: Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet. In Hinlopen Strait, the bird cliffs at Alkefjellet are home to more than a hundred thousand breeding Brunnich’s guillemots, as well as thousands of kittiwakes and black guillemots. It is a spectacular site and a challenging one for our zodiacs as the tidal currents roar through Hinlopen Strait. Nearby Murchison Fjord is a wonderful place to kayak or cruise as we navigate the waterways between the islands. There are some excellent hiking routes here which take us up to high points affording staggering views and further opportunities to encounter Arctic wildlife.DAY 11. Enjoy spectacular Grizzly Bear viewing while staying in a remote floating lodge in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. This small ecotourism lodge, nestled at the mouth of a pristine salmon river has exclusive access to the surrounding forest, guaranteeing a personalised wilderness adventure.

DAY 1 VANCOUVER TO PORT HARDY / GREAT BEAR NATURE LODGE Late this morning depart from Vancouver International Airport (South Terminal) for 70 minute flight to Port Hardy. Upon arrival transfer (included) to the town Port Hardy for lunch (own cost) and to explore the town, Mid-afternoon your will be transferred to the float plane base for your scenic flight over the Queen Charlotte Strait to the floating lodge. After a brief introduction to the lodge you will go out on your first Grizzly Bear excursion.

DAY 2 GREAT BEAR NATURE LODGE In the morning, you will be on the trail of the grizzly bear again after some good coffee and breakfast. A typical viewing session lasts three hours. After a morning of adventure, you will return to the lodge for lunch and a chance to relax. Spend the early afternoon exploring the surrounding area with a guide. A popular activity is the interpretive rainforest walk, examining bear sign and the general ecology of the area. In mid-afternoon you will venture out to see the bears before returning to the lodge for dinner. On clear nights, the stars are amazing.

DAY 3 GREAT BEAR NATURE LODGEAs your stay at the lodge continues, you begin to settle into the natural rhythm of the valley. The bears are generally most active in the early morning and late afternoon hours, which is why the lodge focuses their viewing sessions on these times. Over the course of your stay you will be taken to a variety of sites, depending on the bear activity. For the afternoon recreation today you may take a guided sea-kayaking

tour of the estuary, or a boat cruise to explore the glacier-carved inlet. Or you may prefer to relax and enjoy the view from the lodge. The Great Bear Rainforest is home to many animals, including grey wolves, otters, black bears, mink and bald eagles.

DAY 4 GREAT BEAR NATURE LODGE TO PORT HARDY After your parting session with the bears you will enjoy lunch at the Great Bear Lodge. You will be returned to Port Hardy in the afternoon between 4PM and 6PM. Due to unpredictable weather conditions for flights around the lodge and Port Hardy you have a nights accommodation included in Port Hardy.

DAY 5 PORT HARDY TO VANCOUVER TRANSFER (not included) Mid-morning to Port Hardy airport for your return flight to Vancouver International Airport (South Terminal).

SEP-OCT BEAR WATCHINGThe salmon arrive in significant numbers sometime in late Aug, with their run peaking in Sep and Oct. During the salmon run we see the largest number of bears for the year. The salmon run also attracts a great number of bald eagles, gulls, ravens, and other fish eating birds. This is the best season for seeing cubs. The salmon run continues into Dec, however many bears begin to move towards hibernation by the end of Oct.

MAY-JUN BEAR WATCHINGSpring on the estuary is a beautiful time of the year. The mountaintops are still snow covered and the valley bottoms are cloaked in the fresh green of spring. The valley bustles with animal activity as they all take advantage of the season of growth and renewal. The bears are feeding on the sedges and other plants of the estuarine grasslands. It is also the mating season for the bears, which often occurs near the estuary.

JUL-AUG BEAR WATCHINGDuring summer some bears are still feeding in the estuary as well as the vegetation along the lower river. They are also feeding heavily on berries and skunk cabbage at this time. These plants are common and widely distributed so we tend to have to look farther afield to find bears, which are no longer concentrated near the rich estuary. Additionally, the total numbers of individual bears seen is lower. During summer we continue to use mostly boats for our bear watching excursions.

This is my guide to Aurora viewing in Yellowknife, with help of locals who will be doing their best to ensure you see them too. WHEN IS THE THE AURORA SEASON?It runs from August-April, when there is darkness. During May-July it is just too bright to see them. In keeping with the Arctic season, we are foucussing on August-September.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THEM? Mid-August to the end of September and from mid-November to mid-April are the best aurora viewing seasons in Yellowknife. WHAT TIME DO THEY APPEAR?Whenever the skies are dark. The peak hours are between 11pm and 2am. In Aug-Sep you can expect vewing to start from 9:30pm to catch sunset and last till 3:30am.

WHAT IF IT’S CLOUDY? Clouds literally bring the curtain down on the show, but quick cloud movement means you still have a good chance of some clear skies during the evenings. Having at least the three nights gives you a good chance for clear skies. WHAT DO I NEED TO PHOTOGRAPH THE AURORA?A good SLR with a wide aperture is best, and a tripod for stability as you will need a 2-5 second exposure to capture the colours.

WILL I SEE STARS AS WELL?Oh Yes! you will see millions of stars, satellites, and the whole Milky Way. It’s quite mind blowing (if the skies are clear). The aurora shines beneath the stars, and the viewing areas are away from town, so you will have a wonderful star show as well as aurora viewing. WHAT’S THE WEATHER LIKE?AUGUST. Late evening sunsets will lead right into aurora chasing hours which can present you with spectacular photography opportunities. The daytime temperatures reach low 20°C, and the nights are beginning to dip below 0°C (that’s still considered warm in Yellowknife). More importantly, the skies are often clear.

SEPTEMBER. It’s the autumn equinox month, and common to see heightened aurora activity from September into October. The good conditions from August carry on, although there will be nights where chasing clear skies is required. Temperatures begin cooling off in the evening, but are still not extreme.

WHAT WILL I ACTUALLY SEE?As humans we are so eager to process informa-tion that our eyes and brain don’t allow time to let the colours develop, so we see greens, yellows, and maybe a tinge of pink. Cameras take it slower to let the depth develop. All these photos were taken with 2-5 second exposures.

HOW DO WE SEE THE AURORA?The key thing is to get away from any light pollution. Some companies have viewing areas in remote locations, and others will drive around the area chasing clear skies. These are some samples of the aurora viewing tours available. We will discuss them with you to make sure you choose the one most suitable for your needs.

AURORA VILLAGE:Relax and take in nature’s most spectacular show in comfort at aurora village. You can stay warm in your teepee with a wood fire stove and hot beverages while you wait for the aurora to arrive.

INGRAHAM TRAIL CABIN:A clear dark sky and high solar activity can provide an evening light show that is worth staying up into the wee hours for. Enjoy the warmth of a crackling wood stove, hot beverages and snacks at a remote cabin on the Ingraham Trail.

AURORA CHASING:Take to the open road and litrerally chase the sky looking for the aurora. This option gives you the maximum chance to see the lights as you are not restricted to one location.

Watching the Aurora dance above me in Yellowknife was a phenomenal, almost fairytale like, experience that I will never forget. It was so much more intense and dramatic than I expected, that I simply didn’t want to leave. Three of our featured Arctic expeditions coincide with excellent Aurora viewing in Yellowknife and I encourage everyone booking on those trips to add an Aurora package to your holiday, as it is only a 2hr flight from Edmonton, where several Arctic trips start and end). As with all nature experiences, nothing is nothing guaranteed so our packages are 3 nights, giving you a great chance to see the Aurora, but if you have extra time, you should add another night or 2, as it’s a long way to go back to.

DAY 1. ARRIVE IN YELLOWKNIFE - AURORA Upon arrival in Yellowknife, grab a taxi to your chosen accommodation. This afternoon set out to explore the town. Definitely call into the visitor centre, and adjacent museum to get a great overview of the town (pop’n 20,000), officially settled 82 years ago, but inhabited by Dene for thousands of years. Depart this evening for your first Aurora viewing.

DAY 2. CAMERON FALLS - AURORA (B) After a well-deserved sleep in, take a scenic tour out to Cameron Falls. Heading out of town you’ll visit the Giant Mine and the Yellowknife River to hear the River Legend, a Dene story dating to a time when it's said giants roamed the landscape. Travel along the picturesque Igraham trail to the trailhead and hike just over

1km to see Cameron Falls, followed by a picnic lunch. Those feeling energetic could extend the tour with an excursion to the ramparts, another 8 km past the falls. In August and September as Fall arrives the changing colours of the foilage are a fantastic sight. This evening depart again for more Aurora viewing. DAY 3. YOUR CHOICE TODAY AND AURORA. (B) There’s plenty to do in town, from meeting local artisans, walking trails and excellent cafes. Make sure you take a walk around the historic Old Town with its great shopping and food. This expedition cruise takes travellers to islands and remote parts of Canada’s Atlantic coast. Eastern Canada is famous for a rich and diverse culture, found in small fishing communities and remote ports. The region also offers a staggering abundance of wildlife, including prolific birdlife, numerous seal and whale species and we even encounter the fabled wild horses of Sable Island. Beaches and lagoons provide viewing opportunities for numerous shorebirds. On the cruise we hope to see the great baleen whales such as the humpback, minke and blue whale, as well as grey and harp seals.

DAY 01. LOUISBOURG ARRIVALArrive in Louisbourg and transfer to your hotel.DAY 02. LOUISBOURG, CAPE BRETON ISLAND, NSOur adventure begins in the historic port town of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, where we board our expedition vessel. We enjoy a dinner of fresh, local lobster as we sail out past the lighthouse into the North Atlantic.DAY 03. SABLE ISLAND NATIONAL PARK RESERVE Located on the edge of the Grand Banks, hundreds of kilometers from the coast, Sable Island has a storied history as a graveyard of ships, with more than 350 ships falling victim to the treacherous currents and sandbars. DAY 04. BIRD ISLAND AND ENGLISHTOWN We return to Cape Breton and continue our exploration of this beautiful island by stopping in Englishtown. We encounter Atlantic puffins and razorbills on Bird Island where we explore by zodiac. The seaside community of Englishtown is also a fascinating location.DAY 05. CHARLOTTETOWN, PRINCE EDWARD ISThis is a very historic location and a fitting place to celebrate Canada’s 150th anniversary. Today, we anchor off Prince Edward Island near the town of North Rustico. From here we can split off in several directions. A tour into Charlottetown for those interested in a day in town is an option, or

perhaps a visit to Green Gables, or spend a few hours at the island’s famous Cavendish beach with a mandatory sampling of Cows Ice Cream. DAY 06. LES ILES-DE-LA-MADELEINE Sculpted out of sandstone, these islands in the Gulf of St. Lawrence are home to unique fishing communities with beautifully maintained waterfront houses and boats, flowing grassy meadows and sandstone shorelines sculpted by the elements. DAY 07. ISLE BONAVENTURE (BONAVENTURE ISLAND) AND THE GASPÉ PENINSULA At Bonaventure Island we drop the anchor near the town of Percé and explore the island by zodiac. This location has a rich natural, historic, and geological heritage. Sculpted over time by the sea, the island is situated at the tip of the Gaspé Peninsula. The outstanding flora and fauna, including its famous colony of Northern Gannets, make this location a highlight. DAY 08. ANTICOSTI ISLAND At the mouth of the St. Lawrence River where the river water mixes with Arctic waters from the Strait of Belle Isle and the more temperate Atlantic waters, Anticosti Island is rich in marine wildlife. We plan to hike along the beaches near the eastern end of the island followed by a zodiac cruise along the cliffs at East Point.

DAY 09. GROS MORNE NATIONAL PARK AND WOODY POINT, NEWFOUNDLAND Sailing into majestic Bonne Bay, in the heart of Gros Morne National Park, the cliffs soar up out of the water and are covered in a green blanket of tuckamore forest – windswept spruce sculpted by the ocean breeze. At Woody Point we are welcomed ashore by a delegation from the community before hiking up to the excellent interpretation centre. From there, various guided walks take us into the World Heritage-listed Tablelands and to the lookout for a view over much of the park – a spectacular experience! DAY 10. FRANCOIS The community of Francois (pron. Fran-sway) on the south coast of Newfoundland - was settled in the late 1700s. Small boat fishers harvested a variety of species during the summer fishing season. Francois’s rich fishing heritage also included operation of a whale factory in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a spectacular location and for many, a highlight of the trip.

DAY 11. SAINT-PIERRE ET MIQUELON, FRANCE Saint-Pierre et Miquelon are a small group of islands situated off the south coast of Newfoundland. They were first settled by the French in the early 17th century and today, the islands represent the sole remaining vestige of France’s once vast North American empire. Walking down the streets feels like taking a stroll through a provincial French town. As a part of France, the area has much in common with Europe, but also with its Canadian and American neighbors. There’s an excellent puffin colony here. Tonight we enjoy a special dinner attended by the Captain to mark the end of our voyage through Canada’s spectacular Atlantic provinces. DAY 12. LOUISBOURG We sail back to Cape Breton across the mouth of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, heading again for the historic port of Louisbourg. We will disembark in the morning and, while some of us will head to the airport, many will add a few extra days in Cape Breton to enjoy one of the gems of Canada’s East Coast.

DAY 2. EXCURSION TO GULFOSS (B)Visit the World heritage Þingvellir NP, home of Iceland’s ancient Viking parliament, then walk to marvel at the geological phenomenon that is the Mid-Atlantic ridge. Cross Lyngdalsheiði along a mountain road to the Great Geysir at Haukadalur. This was the first geyser ever described in print and is where the word geyser comes from. Cascading Gullfoss awaits you before heading up to Langjökull glacier. From here the tour heads back to Reykjavik; in summer you can take the adventurous route back through the lava fields.

DAY 3. HOT SPRINGS AND GLACIER WALK (B) Start the day in Hengill geothermal area at the foot of an old volcano. An easy hike takes us to the Reykjadalur valley, to bathe in the beautiful warm stream. Call in at the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls. Pass the Eyjafjallajökull volcano enroute to the wonders of the Sólheimajökull glacier for an easy walk on the ice. Stroll by ice sculptures, ridges and deep crevasses to complete your magnificent day.

DAY 5 & 6: ÞÓRSMÖRK VALLEY & EYJAFJALLAJÖKULL. (B) (B,L)Spend two days exploring Iceland’s South Coast viewing the magnificent waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss along the way. Visit the interesting folk museum at Skógar. Walk along the stunning black volcanic beach by Cape Dyrhólaey. Head off on a 4x4 Driver Guided Super Jeep Tour to Þórsmörk Valley & Hiking Tour in the Foothills of Eyjafjallajökull & Fimmvorðuhals Volcanoes. Continuing onwards our destination is the Basar cabin where we will start our 6-8 hour hike up and down the Fimmvorðuhals volcanoes. DAY 7: A DAY TO RELAX - A ROUND OF GOLF OR A GEOTHERMAL POOL SWIM (B)Today is a relaxing drive along Southeast Iceland Ring Road. DAY 1: ARRIVE REYKJAVIK On arrival, you’ll be met by your private driver and taken to your hotel. After settling in, start exploring this lovely capital. Be sure to check out the design stores and cool cafes in central Reykjavik. In the evening you can enjoy a gourmet dinner at one of Reykjavik’s many fine restaurants - taste the fresh Atlantic seafood or free-range lamb that Iceland is famous for.

DAY 2: EXPLORE REYKJAVIKReykjavik is an easy city to explore on foot or bike. Feel the fresh air on your face with a visit the harbour and perhaps enjoy a food tour of this small capital. If you’re interested in experiencing the city’s thriving coffee culture, head to the main street, Laugavegur, to enjoy its various shops and cosy cafes. Optional day tours include the ‘Inside the Volcano’ or the ‘Inside the Glacier’ tour which we would recommend booking before you travel.

DAY 3: GOLDEN CIRCLE & SOUTHERN ICELANDPick up your hire car at 9.00am in the morning.Today is known as driving the Golden Circle: erupting hot springs at Geysir, Gullfoss waterfalls and Þingvellir National Park. The Gullfoss waterfalls are Iceland’s most popular and easily accessible from Reykjavik, therefore, rather crowded in the peak season. These two-tiered waterfalls are spectacular and

involve a short walk from the car park. Þingvellir is one of the most frequently visited tourist sites in Iceland where you can become better acquainted with Iceland’s history and traditions. You can join guided tours of the site and also find short hiking trails to help you explore Þingvellir National Park.

DAY 4 & 5: GLACIERS & LAGOONS OF SOUTH EAST ICELANDSpend two nights at the Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon with it’s location perfect for nature lovers. Right between Skaftafell and Jökulsarlón Glacier Lagoon, you have time to explore two of Iceland’s most spectacular natural attractions; a hiker’s paradise.

DAY 6: JOURNEY FURTHER EAST TO THE SMALL VILLAGE OF FÁSKRÚÐSFJÖRÐURBe surprised by the small village of Faskruðsfjorður. The French had heavily fished Icelandic waters since the 16th century and street signs here are in Icelandic and French. There is a French cemetery outside town filled with too few of the many thousands of French sailors who lost their lives in 100-plus shipwrecks, and the former French hospital is now a fine hotel with an excellent museum detailing France’s long history of Icelandic miseries. This village is on the Iceland’s east coast, renowned for its magnificent landscape.
