Over this, your white gravethe flowers of life in white--so many years without you--how many have passed out of sight?Over this your white gravecovered for years, there is a stirin the air, something upliftingand, like death, beyond comprehension.Over this your white graveoh, mother, can such loving cease?for all his filial adorationa prayer:Give her eternal peace----"Over This, Your White Grave"

World War II The Nazi regime invades Poland in 1939

Karol Wojtyla’s, later John Paul II, dreams of becoming an actor are jeopardized

All Polish expressions of art, culture, and faith are prohibited by penalty of death.

1941, Wojtyla starts the Rhapsodic Theater, an underground theater, trying to keep the Polish culture alive .

In the midst of pure evil, Karol Wojtyla fights hate with artistic expression and love.

1944: Karol Wojtyla enters

the seminary while

the Jewish culture is

being burned alive

in his own country.

Pope

John Paul II

He was inaugurated

as Pope on October

22nd, 1978.

“In shaping a masterpiece, the

artist not only summons his work

into being, but also in some way

reveals his own personality by

means of it.”-Pope John Paul II Letter to artists, 1999

LETTER TO ARTISTS

In 1999, pope John Paul II challenged artists to respond to the

world’s need for truth, love, and peace through the use of art.

“Mine is an invitation to rediscover the depth of the spiritual and religious dimension which has been typical of art in its noblest forms in every age.” John Paul II Letter to Artists, 1999

A response to John Paul II’s Invitation
