SECTION 3: SCIENTIFIC/TECHNICAL ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Numerical Model Development

1982 Developed adiabatic parcel model with special emphasis on investigating themass-fraction of aerosols that activate in clouds. Publication with Bob Charlson,1984 .

1984 Developed a model of the breakdown of turbulent eddies involved in mixing be-tween cloudy and entrained air. Used to determine if drop spectra respond viathe homogeneous or inhomogeneous mixing type. Publication with Marcia Baker,1989.

2003 Developed a model droplet growth in marine stratocumulus. Model applied todetermine if variability in warm rain from marine stratocumulus is predominantlycaused by giant sea-salt aerosols or by smaller natual and anthropogenic aerosols.

2009 The stochastic cloud model is adapted to examine the collisional loss rates ofsmaller drops, with the result that small drop collisions are near-omnipresent inwarm cloud and that this process is a major pathway for reducing atmosphericaerosol concentrations.

2013 Developed a simplified model, focusing only on condensational and coalescencegrowth of giant sea-salt aerosol particles, when they are "tossed into" a staticcloud, hence the name Toss-Box Model. This model is suited to implementationfor autoconversion in mesoscale and climate models.

2015 Developed a continuous collection adiabatic parcel model with condensation onsmall CCN and giant GCCN, in collaboration with Dr. A. Nugent.

2016 Continuous collection model was modified for optimization on parallel computer(Yellowstone) using MPI instructions, in collaboration with Dr. A. Fanfarillo, CISL.

Instrumentation Development

Developments at CSIRO

• Development of two generations of data-logging systems, including deployment in1991 of an airborne network for real-time data access and analysis.

• Development of CAR’s data conversion software, which typically converts high-ratedata from more than 30 analog, digital and imaging sensors simultaneously.

• Development of CAR’s analysis software, which is used for real-time display on theaircraft, for "historical" data while still flying, and for analysis on the ground.

• Calibration of "standard" aircraft sensors (thermodynamics, winds, aerosols, clouds, precipitation, and radiation).

• Development of many new instruments, including a 4 -port turbulence probe, tem-perature and humidity sensors, testing of a new isokinetic inlet in high-speed wind

tunnel, aerosol impactor, and a prototype automated optical microscope system withhumidity control and image recognition for sizing of giant aerosol particles.

• Electronics update of virtually all of CSIRO sensors and data interface systems (ana-log, particle, and image systems).

Responsibilities and developments at NCAR

• Development of a dual-view optical microscope system for sampling and analysis ofgiant aerosol particles (with Stuart Beaton).

• Integration of a high-precision differential GPS system for calibration of aircraft staticpressure and for dynamical studies of convection initiation (with Stuart Beaton andPavel Romashkin).

• Responsible for overall HAIS instrumentation suite management ($12M).

• Development of an automated (robotics) system for exposing giant aerosol polycar-bonate slides outside a pressurized aircraft (with Mike Spowart, Larry Murphy, KarlSchwenz, Joshua Carnes, Chris Webster, Janine Aquino, John Munnerlyn and TylorLugger). Deployed in 2016 ORCAS with satellite remote controls followed by exten-sive additional work in the present cycle (new electronics, programming changes, development of ground-based GUI program for control, better passing of status pa-rameters, more accurate timing information, modified polycarbonate slides, manymechanical changes, complete rewiring, building of external power-supply and com-puter box, etc.) leading to a very successful final test of the remote-controlled systemfrom 4 0,000 ft to surface during ARISTO-2017 .
