COUNCIL NEWS! QUAPAW SCOUTER NEWSLETTER

JULY – AUGUST 2018

Marcal Young named new Scout Executive – begins August 1 On June 19th, the Qupaw Area Council selection committee, headed by Council President Dr. David Briscoe, named Marcal Young as the new Scout Executive, replacing John Carman who retired on June 30. Marcal will begin his tenure as Scout Executive on August 1. Marcal began his Scouting career as a district executive at New Orleans Area Council in Metairie, Louisiana. He moved on to become the senior district executive M/P with Ouachita Valley Council in Monroe, Louisiana. He then served here in the Quapaw Area Council as Field Director, Assistant Scout Executive, and Director of Field Services, leaving to become Scout Executive of Caddo Area Council in Texarkana, Texas. He currently serves as Area Director of Area 8 of the Southern Region. Marcal is an Eagle Scout who enjoys hunting, fishing, golfing, and spending time with his grandchildren. He and his wife, Sandy, have five children. Please help us welcome Marcal to his new role in Scouting as he joins in partnership with the volunteers and staff of Quapaw Area Council to deliver quality Scouting experiences to the young people of Arkansas.

Join Scouting Night 2018 Promises to be Largest Ever! What has become the biggest night of the year in the Quapaw Area Council promises to be bigger than ever in 2018! While the last several years have seen us recruit over 3,000 new Cub Scouts in one night, this year’s Join Scouting Night should be the largest ever because of two very important changes: the Lions program for Kindergarteners and the fact that the Cub Scout program is now available for girls.

Join Scouting Night involves bringing the Cub Scout program into virtually every school in the 39 counties in our council area. Staff and volunteers visit each school prior to the big night and invite kids to come back on Thursday, August 23rd at 6:30 to sign up.

This year’s Join Scouting Night also represents the first time that parents will have the opportunity to sign up their children using the new online application process. This new option should help eliminate some of the common errors that occur on paper applications.

Pulling off something of this scale requires a massive number of people. Volunteers are need to help with visiting schools in the days leading up to Join Scouting Night as well as a lot of volunteers to help sign up kids on the evening of August 23rd.

Would you please consider giving of your time to help get these youngsters started in their Scouting journey?

World Scout Jamboree 2019 An Experience of a Lifetime

Forty Scouts, 36 youth and 4 adults, from our Council will have the opportunity of a lifetime by attending the 2019 World Scout Jamboree in the United States. The adult leadership for the trip has been named. Dr. Raymond Jones from White Hall will serve as the Quapaw Area Council troop Scoutmaster. Dr. Jones is an experienced Jamboree Scoutmaster having served as one on three National Jamborees in the past. However, there are still opportunities available to be part of the first World Jamboree in the United States in over 50 years! The troop still needs a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster (between the ages of 18 & 21). Additionally, there is still room for our youth to sign-up…but time is running short. To be eligible to attend, Scouts must have been born between July 22, 2001 and July 21, 2005. Now is the time to make the decision, reach for the stars, dream the impossible dream, attend the 2019 World Scout Jamboree. For more information and to register to attend go to: https://www.2019wsj.org/

Over 1,000 scouts participated in this year’s program, enjoying activities from archery to shotgun, sailing to scuba and countless other fun activities. Special thanks to all the volunteers, staffers and participants who combined to make it a very special summer. One new wrinkle this year was an experiment with helping the families back home get a taste of the fun by live streaming several campfire ceremonies on the Facebook page. Check out Camp Rockefeller on Facebook if you’d like to experience archives of some of the Scouting fun!
