Worker safety concerns at Armstrong World Industries’ Melbourne warehouse and distribution

centre resulted in them turning to Leda-Vannaclip for solutions. After consultation with Maintenance Supervisor Anthony Matulis and other warehouse staff Leda-Vannaclip proposed a

unique solution for their safety issues. Four boom gates were installed inside the warehouse distribution centre to control forklift entry to shared work areas, each gate being controlled by

three in-ground induction loops (entry, safety and exit) thereby allowing easy access by all forklift drivers. However when any of the areas need to be used by other staff and their safety becomes an issue, each of the gates can be

turned off (from wall mounted key switches) and forklift entry

totally prevented.

When the areas are open to forklift traffic a low level but

clearly audible ‘peizo buzzer’ operates advising all staff

entering the area that forklifts are operating in the vicinity.

Conversely when any gate is turned off the buzzer does not

operate but a flashing light advises forklift drivers that they

are currently unable to enter that area.

shopping centres. All industry representatives gained valuable knowledge and insight into the differences between the various bollard infill materials versus

cutting times for each type. As illustrated at the cutting demonstrations the new barrier mixes will substantially slow down attacks on ATM’s.

Leda Vannaclip’s Victorian Manager Huck Havelberg believes that this ingenious technical solution

to a common OH&S problem is the first of its type, and although designed specifically to address worker safety at AWI’s Mentone facility, he thinks that the benefits it offers large warehouses

and factories means in the future “many other companies will look to such creative solutions to increase worker safety”.

Our CBR4SC is the most popular bicycle rack in Australia however we can still be surprised where

they turn up.

On a recent trip from Circular Quay to Manly the writer was surprised to find two bike racks

installed on the Manly ferry he was travelling on. Being at night no cyclists were using them on this trip however they are available if you intend taking your bicycle on a Manly Ferry.

School solves three interrelated safety and access control problems

Innovative Bicycle Mini-Lockers

Carranballac college, a new and rapidly expanding school in Melbourne’s

Point Cook area faced a growing safety issue. The two campus college identified the need for more bicycle parking to cater for the increasing

numbers of students cycling to school. At the same time they recognised the growing risk posed to these students as they drove through the carpark to

the bike parking areas.

Although designed for use by staff only, both carparks were freely accessible from the street and were being increasingly used by visitors, delivery trucks

and service vehicles.

The ‘access safety issue’ was resolved with the decision to install a pair of

reliable L-V torque-drive boom gates at each entrance. Each pair was set up so all staff could operate each of the gates at

either campus with a single two button key-ring ‘remote’. Currently 150 staff has their own gate ‘airkey’ and the system has dramatically improved the parking and security issues.

The shortage of bicycle parking was solved with the installation of the space-efficient “Compact Security” bike racks, with 27

modules being fitted on the two campuses. The compact nature of this design enabled the school to create more bike parking than they thought they could achieve in the limited space available. And with the boom gates solving the access issues the students can use their bicycles much more safely on the school grounds.

'The NSW Ministry of Transport installed the 1000th Bicycle Locker on

the 13th of March at Kiama railway station. .

For many years the NSW Government has been committed to encouragingcyclists to utilise public transport. Bike lockers enable commuters to

combine the sustainable transport option of cycling with travelling onpublic transport such as buses, trains or ferries. …………………..

The Ministry in conjunction with Leda-Vannaclip, facilitate the

installation of the bike lockers by measuring the sites, obtainingowner's approval and pouring reinforced concrete slabs. Leda-Vannaclip are

proud to be associated with this project by manufacturing, supplying and installing the lockers for the Ministry.'

The Broadway Shopping Centre in Sydney recently chose L-V’s

Securabike® Mini-Lockers to cater for their growing demand from Centre users for secure bicycle parking.

Presented with conflicting requirements for a high security,

limited available space and the need for storage ‘lockers’ for the stowing of cyclists gear while shopping, the Centre decided on

the new mini-lockers because they best met the convenience, security, storage and space saving criteria.

1000th Bicycle Locker Installed

The recently introduced Mini-Locker is a new design and features a sealed and secure locker section for the cyclist to store his

helmet and gear, including any ‘at-risk’ accessories fitted to the bike, plus two in-built lockable cables. The gear is stowed, the lid shut and the cables passed through the wheels and frame. In just a few seconds the bike and gear are secured. Although

the bicycle is still exposed to the weather all the gear is kept safe and dry.

Thirty seven Mini-Lockers were ultimately installed, being positioned close to manned pay booths for added security. The success of this project, which is the largest installation to date of the new Mini-lockers, has already resulted in many enquiries from other Shopping Centres and businesses.

Overcoming OH&S concerns

Helping secure Adelaide’s water supply

Leda Vannaclip’s expertise was put to the test in overcoming a series of challenges

presented by a recent installation at the Telstra stadium at Homebush.

Site of the unforgettable 2000 Sydney Olympics opening and closing ceremonies, the project faced a number of technical difficulties, not the least of which were the high

amount of reinforcement in the concrete and the need to avoid both the electrical cabling and pre-tensioning cables embedded in the ‘suspended slab’ floor.

Working in collaboration with Image Project Management we were asked to fit a series

of locking and removable bollards around the VIP entrance. L-V’s ‘Slimline’ stainless steel locking and removable bollards were chosen as they provided both the quality

image required, plus the strength to stand up to the rigours of large crowds. In addition, the reliability and unique design of the ‘Securapost®’ patented locking

mechanism provided the Stadium staff with ease of handling and ‘no bending’ removal – an important feature in these days of sensitivity to all OH&S issues.

After a significant amount of preliminary work and liaison on layout the job was

ultimately completed in one night, earning the appreciation of the Telstra Stadium management.

Telstra Stadium Sydney

The L-V state office in Adelaide have recently overseen the successfully completion of a

substantial project to upgrade the perimeter of SA Water’s “Murray Bridge to Onkaparinga Pipeline”.

Working closely with Chubb Australia (main security contractor to the client) we helped

secure a total of five pumping stations with specially designed security window grilles and anti-climb ‘ladder guards’, including electric fencing to three of the pumping stations.

Another recent collaboration with Chubb resulted in Leda-Vannaclip securing the ABC offices

at Collinswood in Adelaide. In this project a whole range of products were installed, including a high strength Cantilever and a Pedestrian Gate. The project also included

perimeter Fencing and protective Bollards.

L-V’s State Manager Ben Pascoe is highly optimistic about the future of the recently opened Adelaide office saying that “new business is growing each month and we are developing.strong relationships with established security providers like Chubb”.

He also pointed out that local architects were pleased to have a local office of Leda-Vannaclip and to get first hand advice on the entire range of L-V products, including security bollards and the Securabike® range of bicycle parking products.

A recent project completed in collaboration with Chubb Australia

at the Ipswich City Council depot included a Pedestrian gate and a seven meter Cantilever Gate with a safety fence enclosure.

The council had concerns for employees safety when opening

and closing the gate and asked for a safety fence to be erected enclosing the back tail section. Leda-Vannaclip also provided a

reed switch as an additional safety feature. This switch which is located on the service door of the control cabinet will deactivate the gate on contact.

Message from the Chairman – R&D

As part of Leda-Vannaclip’s ongoing

support of its automated products, we now offer a ‘free’ first service at 3

months from installation. The purpose of an early service is to

ensure that all automated equipment is operating safely and to our client’s

expectations. Our service technicians will organise a time to visit, perform

the service and provide a written report.

Conditions apply so talk to our offices

for further details. Above & below left; Leda-Vannaclip’s experienced service technicians Mick Borg & Ray Wilson.

Leda-Vannaclip’s commitment to Researching and Developing New Products and technology in

Particular our Retractable Bollards has led to two new Patent applications involving the New Tri-Shaft platform. Using experience gained in the manufacture, installation and servicing our retractable

bollards over the last decade Leda-Vannaclip’s engineers have designed the next generation of retractable Bollards with “Servicing and Maintenance” a high priority.

With these New Retractable Bollard models the complete drive assembly housing the Electric Motor,

Gear box and Belt drive can be removed and replaced in minutes rather than hours, saving substantial maintenance costs and reduced downtime. This innovation and the “Tri-Shaft” platform are subject to

two new patent applications that have been filed with the Australian Patents office.

In recent months the Australian Patents office granted an innovation patent to Leda-Vannaclip for “A Land Vehicle Barrier”. This

Patent applies to our Pre-cast concrete Planters and Logs and their keying into the pavement. These products were developed to provide physical Perimeter Barriers against possible terrorist attack with motor vehicles on high profile and defence sites and

buildings in Australia and Australian missions overseas.

‘Ambitious’. This follows a highly successful 2007 sailing season for

‘Ambitious’ and its skipper.

“The large yellow spinnaker featuring Securapost® Security Bollards was seen leading the fleet on Sydney Harbour regularly this season remarked its skipper”.

Security Nomination ASIAL NSW Branch held its Annual General meeting in June

with David Matthews (Leda-Vannaclip’s chairman) being nominated and elected to the NSW working group.

The Australian Security Industry Association Ltd (ASIAL) is the peak national body for the Australian Security Industry.

Since its establishment in 1969, ASIAL has grown from a small network of security companies to one that today

represents approximately 85% of the security industry in Australia.

In recent years Leda-Vannaclip has helped Australia secure

its embassies and other diplomatic buildings throughout Asia. The most recent is the manufacture of high strength auto

sliding gates (cantiliever type) for the Australian High Commission in New Delhi, India.

The work involved customised design of gates to especially

high security and reliability standards, plus the provision of secure pedestrian gates and turnstiles for controlled entry by

staff.

For security purposes the gates were also to be fully clad and needed to be of lighter than normal weight to reduce

shipping costs and handling issues.

The design team at Leda-Vannaclip was able to cleverly modify all features of the standard security gate and turnstile

specifications to both meet the special site requirements and stay within budget.
