Year P/1/2

From Mrs Maddison Atkins

In prep / 1/ 2 we have had a great 2 weeks. On the 22nd of May we went down to Mossman to the under 8’s day. Everyone had an amazing time. There was so much to do including face painting, animals, beading, twister, bubble blowing and lots lots more. Under 8’s day was about celebrating learning through play and interactions well as enjoying being a child and having a great time. We also had a busy week getting ready for carnival last week. As a class we were in charge of coming up with something silver. We decided that big silver fish would be fun and effective. The students helped paint all the fish and made different types of scales so each one was unique. The fish looked amazing on the night. In class we are getting close to completing our assessment for all our subjects for this term. We have all been very busy reading a lot of different cultural stories in English, designing boats that float in Science, looking at time and shapes in Maths and learning about different technology and what we use it for in Digital technology. We have a busy few weeks of assessment ahead. Mrs Atkins

Years 3 & 4

From Mr Kilfoy

Wow, how time flies, week 6 already! We have been super busy in the short amount of time we had together. We had a major Science focus learning all about how day and night occurs, including shadow investigations so we can use all this knowledge to create a power point presentation to demonstrate our understanding. In English we have been focusing on procedural texts, in particular, looking at the difference between written and spoken dialogue. We are also reading Fantastic Mr Fox and analysing the main characters. This will help us create and present a dialogue between two characters from a story, where one character is telling another character how to do something. Students will present their dialogue with a partner using appropriate interaction skills. To help support your child, getting them to explain a simple task such as making toast and discussing formal and informal language can assist them understanding this form of language feature.

Years 5 & 6 From Ms Warburton

Building Futuristic Colonies in Space

We participated in an online presentation about constructing colonies on Mars and Venus in the future. Jeremy, William and Hugo, the presenters, explained their ideas about how this could happen. Koah: I learnt so much information about making new colonies in space. It may even be possible to build a chicken farm on another planet. Chase: I listened and watched some presentations about futuristic space colonies. The farms would have to have a dome over them as animals can’t use oxygen tanks. Elijah: Today I learnt so much about traveling to Mars and Venus in reusable rockets and building new colonies. We may need them in the future in case we can’t live on Earth any longer. Elijah, Koah, Chase: It was interesting, educational and exciting to hear the ideas.

Parents/Carers this is a great opportunity to get your child’s hearing and eyesight tested. Australian Hearing does hearing tests at the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre, you can contact them on Ph: (07) 4099 5518 or you can ask your local GP. To find local Optometrists in the region, just look online. They are available between the townships of Mareeba and Port Douglas. We ask that you also share the resulting information with the school. This is so, that if required we can assist your child with their educational needs. You can email the result yourself or get the Service provider you have utilized to send the results through to the email address below: [email protected]
