THE LONDON BUTCHERS.

Introductory Notes.

There is reason to believe that the London butchers follow on from the genealogical line of the Fairhodes, mentioned in"The Fayrehodes of Ludgate Hill". It must be born in mind that some entries in the church registers are not necessarily correct, infact some date entries vary when recording the same event and also during the early period the pen was the tool of the very few,some individuals did not even know their own age. The dates given throughout this account are, as far as can be ascertained, birthwhere the letter 'b' is used, or baptism where ‘bap’ is used and 'abt' means estimated dates where the real figures are unobtainable.

Doubtless a number of readers will fault some of the statements made and may be able to give a truer account of thehappenings. This can be only part of the full story and any additions will be most welcome.

A.E.Fairhead Norwich, January, 1975.

Albert’s original book “The London Butchers” is set out below.

Since the death of Albert (in 1976) material has been gathered by the late Mr. G.T. Fairhead, myself, and fellowshipmembers in general and added to Albert's work to give a fuller and more informative story. The record below is compiled fromAlbert's original book and the new information collected since that time. Doubtless a number of readers will fault some of thestatements made and may be able to give a truer account of the happenings. This can be only part of the full story and anyadditions will be most welcome.

Where places are described as a ‘District’, this is the Registration District where the event was registered. CivilRegistration was introduced in 1837, the Index’s to these entries can now be viewed online, it should be noted that the names andboundaries of many of these Districts have changed over the years. A list of these districts can be found athttp://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/index.html

Where individuals have “No record” next to their entry there may be an entry in the “Don’t Know” section, but there is notenough evidence to link to the person concerned. ----------- Between individuals denotes different families, --- betweenindividuals denotes the division between step siblings in one family(Individual I. D. No’s. are in Blue)

At this time (July 2014) I have still been unable to connect “The London Butchers” to the “The Fayrehodes of Ludgate Hill”.

The First Phase.

Amongst the earliest of the Family in the trade of Butcher was :-

William Fairhed (3067) butcher, of St. Andrews Hubbard, London, born about the year 1370 and :-

John Fayrehede (3068) born about 1375 also a butcher of St. Andrews Hubbard. These were possibly brothers, and grandsons of :-

John Fayreher (3060) born c.1310, the Grocer, and great grandsons of :-

Geoffrey Fairher (3064) born c.1280.

There is also reason to believe that they were of one family as each made some contribution to the church of St. Leonardde Estchepe and were buried there, possibly in the same tomb.

There were varying surnames adopted in that time (quite probably this was due to the fact that reading and writing was askill acquired by very few in those days and that spelling was not standardised as it is today, and the person doing the writing, putdown his version as he heard the word spoken, accounting for many of the variations) and to support this theory Albert found thatthe son of William Fairhed was named John Fayrehere. In the will of Juliana dated the 27th December 1442 relict of :-

William Fairhed 1370 (3067) the son of :-

John, born c.1340 (3062) was mentioned together with his wife Agnes and their daughter Johanna and in the will of theson, John Fayrehere, the same persons were mentioned together with the same servants and apprentices, about eight of them,which suggests that they were of one household, and of the same family. This

John Fayrehere (3069) born about the turn of the century died in early life, actually one year after his mother in 1443. Hewas followed by another :-

John (Fayrehede) (3071) but the relative connection could not be traced. This John was born about the year 1420 and diedin 1469. His wife Margaret survived him.

-------------------------

From the above records a family line something like that shown below can be deduced :-

Geoffrey 1280 (3064)

||----- John 1310 (3060)

||------- John 1340 (3062)

||------ William 1370 (3067)

John 1375 (3068) ------| Johanna (3066) |------ John 1399 (3069)

||------ John 1420 (3071)

---------------------------

Records for the next century seem uncertain, but there is reason to believe that the family adopted the name of Fairhod.

The next entry that has been found is :-

John Fairhod (3074) born c.1550. It may be noted that the family is still at St. Andrews Hubbard, the same address as theearlier Fairheds and Fairheres and one may suggest that this is a continuation of that butchers line. The baptism of John Fairhodwas followed by :-

John Fairhod (3076) baptised in October 1588 at St. Andrews Hubbard. And :-

Esther Fairhod (3077) in April 1590.

----------

John Fairhod 1588 (3076) married Anna Loades at St. Martins, Ludgate in August 1610.

The Second Phase.

Now again there is a further interval in the records until it is found that:-

Thomas (Farrar) 1770 (2906) married Henrietta ? (2907) in Holborn, London in 1795. Thomas owned a ButchersBusiness based at 12 Fetter Lane, Holborn. This union brought about the birth of two sons :-

Thomas John (2908) b 26th January 1792Henry (2909) b 30th May 1798

***************************************

p.s. After some years of keeping these Fairhead records I (Richard) have now (April 98) reached the conclusion that the name“Farrar “ is not connected to our family and when time permits I will endeavour to make a connection between the 2 sonsmentioned above ( Thomas John and Henry ) and earlier generations mentioned previously. Obviously with such commonChristian names there is some difficulty in arriving at the correct record, especially in times when information such as this was notkept with today’s modern methods and efficiency.

There may have been more in this family but Albert was unable to trace any.

At this point, now that some of the family have moved to Essex , some information about the village of Earls Colne will probablybe of interest to the reader, this information was obtained from the Internet. :-

The Parish of Earls Colne.

Earls Colne is named after the river Colne upon which it lies, and the Earls of Oxford who owned the manor frombefore the start of our documents and who were often buried there. It is five miles from the market town of Coggeshall, ten milesfrom Colchester and about forty miles north east of the city of London. With a total circumference of approximately ten miles andan area of just under three thousand acres, it constituted a tiny part of the land area of England. Likewise its total population,which fluctuated between 500 and 1000 persons during this period, only constituted roughly one hundredth of the population ofthe county of Essex and one ten thousandth of the total population of England and Wales. Despite this, and despite the regionaldiversity of England, there are grounds for believing that we are observing in this parish a microcosm of life not only in north-eastern Essex or East Anglia, but also in England in general.

Earls Colne lies in the boulder clay plateau of northern central Essex at a height of between 100 feet and 400 feet abovesea level, in an area of small hills and valleys. Although there were traces of open field cultivation in the fifteenth century, most ofthe parish, like much of central Essex, had been early enclosed into small fields with hedges. Most of the old forest had receded,except for one large medieval woodland called Chalkney Wood comprising about a fifteenth of the parish. There were also a fewalder groves and marshes, but most of the rest of the land was used for mixed farming. The use of the land changed very greatlyduring the period 1400-1750. In the seventeenth century, for example, the crops included grain, hops, fruit, and vegetables andthere were various kinds of animal husbandry. Although the river Colne that formed the northern border was not navigable at thispoint, its waters drove two mills. The main communications were along roads to Coggeshall, Colchester and Halstead, includingthe main Cambridge to Colchester road, which ran through the village. Much of the produce from the village was taken in thisway down to Colchester where it was carried by water to other ports, including London. Apart from agriculture, the mainoccupations were shop keeping and petty manufactures. There was a fair on Lady Day (March 25th) and numerous shops andinns. There was a market place with open stalls in the middle of the village. Occupations altered very considerably through thecenturies. As well as smiths, tanners, millers and other occupations there were, particularly from the later sixteenth century withthe influx of Dutch immigrants into north-eastern Essex, considerable numbers employed in spinning and weaving cloth for exportall over Europe. In all these respects, Earls Colne was similar though not identical to other villages in northern and central Essex.

The size of the village fluctuated very considerably over these three hundred and fifty years, from a lower limit of alittle over a hundred dwellings to an upper limit of twice that number. In 1598, when there is a map, there were 139 houses (140including Colne Priory). Many of these were subdivided. Two thirds of the houses lay in the main village along the street, theother third was scattered as farms and cottages through the rest of the parish: a nucleated settlement pattern characteristic of thispart of Essex. There were also several larger buildings: the parish church of St. Andrew; the buildings of the small BenedictinePriory of Colne which flourished until 1534; the central residence of the lords of the manor which was several times rebuilt, beingmoved from near to the church to the site of the dissolved Priory.

When we turn to the landholding pattern, we find that less than two hundred acres of Earls Colne was held by 'free deed'or freehold directly of the King. The rest was held in two lordships: the manor of Earls Colne and Colne Priory. During the periodfrom 1137 up to 1583 the former was held by the Earls of Oxford as part of the Earldom. The seventeenth Earl sold it in that yearto Roger Harlakenden whose descendants have held it ever since. The other, the manor of Colne Priory, was held by the Prioryuntil 1534 and then granted a few years later to the Earls of Oxford until they sold it to the same Harlakenden family in 1592.Approximately two fifths of each of the two manors were let out to tenants by copyhold tenure, the other three fifths were helddirectly by the lords as demesne. During the course of time, some of this land was formed into largish farms usually of betweenfifty and one hundred acres such as Hay House and Curds.

George died on the 28 th September1871, aged 51, at Earls Colne, and as far as can be ascertained the butchers business was not carried on by any of their sons so itwould appear to be the end of the Fairhead butchers at Earls Colne.
